A Special Donation to Locks of LoveFor over 18 month my mother has been planning for this day. You see for many years my mother and I has been a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and have seen first hand how lose of hair affects cancer patients especially children. Fantastic Sams www.FantasticSams.com made it so easy for my mother to make a special donation to Locks of Love. Check out Photos 86 and 87 to see how easy it was to donate hair. This organization accepts donations of hair (male or female, young or older) that is a minumum of 10 inches in lenght, to make hair pieces for cancer patients. Disaster Preparedness ToolsI attended a Disaster Preparedness presentation by Ed Nicely on Saturday July 29, 2006 at the First Annual Statewide VA INFO Conference " Strong Roots for a Healthy Future" . Here are two tools that may be helpful to parents and caregivers with children with special health care needs. Americans with Disabilities Act 1990 - 2006 16 Years of Making a DifferenceOn July 26, 2006, I had the opportunity to attend the A National Dialogue on the State of Disability ADA Town Hall Meeting. This event was sponsored by the National Council on Disability (NCD) and Federal Partners. The event was held at the National Press Club, 529 14th Street, NW, 13th Floor Ballroom, Washington, DC. I had the opportunity to hear from three different panels: Panel 1: Equality of Opportunity and Full Participation; Panel 2: Independent Living; Panel 3: Economic Self-Sufficiency. My mother was able to ask a question of the panelists of Panel 1: Equality of Opportunity and Full Participation about the issues of equal access to an education for GAP Kids or Gray-area Kids. In the afternoon a presentation was made about The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Improve the Health and Wellness of Persons with Disabilities 2005. Both my mother and I got the opportunity to talk briefly with Yoshiko Dart, wife of Justin Dart who was a leader of the Disability movement and an active participant in the development of the ADA. Yoshiko" Attended a Hearing held in Washington DCOn July 12,2006, both my mother and I attended a hearing on "No Child Left Behind: Ensuring High Academic Achievement for Limited English Proficient Students and Students with Disabilities". The Committee on Education and the Workforce scheduled this hearing as part of a series of hearings focusing on the No Child Left Behind Act. The witness list and testimony for the hearing can be found at http://edworkforce.house.gov/hearings/109th/fc/fchearings.htm That night both my mother and I, attended the State Special Education Advisory Committee (SSEAC) Pubic Forum. The forum was held at the Marriott Fairfax at Fair Oaks in Fairfax, Virginia .
Pandemic FluOn June 29, 2006, I attended the Quarterly Planning Meeting of the Goochland Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) & Citizen Corps. The topic was Pandemic: What do we need to do? The Guset Speaker was Dr. Tweel for the Virginia Department of Health.
