Drivers & Teams : The teams are getting better and better in this series. A few years ago only about 5 teams could win races in this series and only about 2 or 3 teams could win a championship. NASCAR makes provisional entry changes

Daytona Beach, FL (Sports Network) - The provisional entry system for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series and Busch Series will have several changes beginning with the 2004 season.

The most visible change in the system will be to increase the number of cars that make the 43-car fields using their qualifying times from 36 to 38 teams.

The "champion's" provisional remains in place for the 43rd and final starting position.

Car owners in the top-45 positions of the 2003 owner championship standings will receive four provisional entries at the beginning of the season and can accrue a maximum of 10 provisional. In a change from last season, each provisional entry used will count against the car owner regardless of standing.

In the Busch Series, car owners who use a driver who is among the top-35 in the Nextel Cup Series championship points will be ineligible for a provisional starting position.
