In 1875, over three hundred Icelandic settlers immigrated to this small community in Northern Ontario, hired to complete the railway.

One hundred and thirty years later, a car crashes into a swamp outside the small town of Kinmount and a stone crypt surfaces. When the stone box is opened the evil contained within is released to prey on the living descendants of the tombs occupants. The evil predator strike victims with luring violence, while lashing out in revenge of their deaths. Mutilation, freezing and impalement leave the town's District Fire Chief, Allin Coppers, wondering who the next victim will be.

Drawn into the violence is Ambreen Betmen, a recently retired exotic dancer, who has inherited a Victorian waterfront home that once belonged to a British Aristocrat. Ambreen plays out a series of visions and dreams gyrating back to the Icelandic settlement.

As Ascending Powers spins onward, Ambreen and Allin face a gruesome puzzle and discover one horrifying revelation after another.

A Local Native Reservation site age old rituals and ceremonies in fear the evil has returned, fulfilling a long awaited prophecy. Only the Chosen One can send the evil back from the Sacred Shores.

A story revealed through a spirit journey escalates into the mystery of finding the Chosen One.

Time is running out for all of them......as the Chosen One must confront the truth of Ascending Powers.

From the critic's standpoint there are several things they look for in a book that will make it tremendous. Well-defined characters, descriptive scenery, rock-hard plot development, rhythmic pace, tight writing, three dimensional heroes and villains, surprising twists that add jaw-dropping thrill and most of all writing that promotes deep-thought.

However, as a reader, they want to be dramatically drawn into the pages so that they completely forget everything listed above.

 

 

 

 

Ascending Powers by Beth Waite is an awesome read.  A tale of the awful things that can happen when the arrogance of one culture dominates another.  When a group of Icelandic settlers arrived in Canada to work at the railway, they never encountered the good life
they had dreamed of, but only the horrors of servitude at the whims of local residents who thought of them as animals.

Through the many years it took to destroy them, the Icelanders found friendship among the local Indian tribes, who taught them to survive in the Canadian winters.  None the less, they either died of man-caused genocide by poisons administered by the
doctor, or fell to more horrible deaths by the hands of sadists.  Now, they await the coming of The Chosen One to help them find their way to paradise in the skies.

Beth Waite creates horrible crime scenes wrapped in awesome displays of weather that takes the reader to the edge of their seat as things begin to unfold. The characters and story line make it easy to slip into the story and allow it to wrap around the reader until the final scenes bring understanding and peace.

A great read, I offer up Ascending Powers as a five-star trip through history, the occult, and reading enjoyment.

great "novel" journey, May 18, 2007 By  Lyndell Hendricks (Cleveland, Ohio USA) I have been on a great "novel" journey. What a good, fast pace read. When it was compared to Stephen King, I said to myself "come on now!" To my surprise, it was really without disappointment. At first, I was distracted by the main protagonist being a stripper, but then it became sexy. So I read on and the "word paintings" gradually and smoothly whisked me off into the world of imagination and suspense. I was gone, and consumed- yes, in flight. I found myself pacing my reality time to conveniently return to this web of intrigue, strong characterization, and sensual recognition. After reading the last word, I landed with a smile on my face. Watch out Stephen King
