FACTS |

Here are some general facts regarding Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Australia:

"We were trying to get away..." |
There were quite a few fires started in detention centres around Australia, earlier in 2003. A man taken in for questioning was asked why he did it.
He responded: “We were trying to get away! The centre is making us crazy.”

Hopelessness |
Many adults suffer from severe depression in detention.
Every day more people are deported, and their hope fades as they are forced to wait.

Are we there yet?... |
There is no legal limit to how long people can be kept in detention, not even for children.
These are the future generations, imagine what they’ll grow up to be like? That is if they survive the detention centres...
There was a little girl who had to visit the doctor. She was forced to wear handcuffs and be accompanied by guards. What’s she done wrong?

If we treated our animals this way, we’d be put in jail! |
People argue that refugees in detention have it easier that we think because they have access to gyms, DVDs, yoga classes, and Foxtel, but so do we!
The Detention centres should not be prisons! These people should not just be given a few scraps a day, a blanket and a place to sleep on the floor. The legitimate refugees haven’t committed any crimes.
Inside these centres, no matter what they are given (videos, swimming pools, or Tai Chi lessons), it’s the fact that they are being held prisoners in a place where they thought they could be safe that is wrong. Parents are checking on their children during the night to check they haven’t committed suicide.
If we treated our animals this way, we’d be put in jail!

Happy New Year |
On New Years Eve last year, over one hundred refugees received notices, telling them that they have been rejected.
They are permitted to leave Australia at any time through deportation.
Many of them choose to stay on, and people must ask…
Why do they stay here, in detention and punishment, instead of returning to their own countries?
