New England Railway Inc was formed in 1998, when railway groups from Armidale and Glen Innes came together to form the one group.
New England Railway Inc. is a Volunteer based Heritage Tourist Railway group with bases at Armidale, Glen Innes and Jennings/Wallangarra in the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales Australia. New England plans to run a tourist passenger service from Armidale to Wallangarra, starting off with short destinations
when acces becomes available. Access may be sooner rather than later
now since the announcement of the Melbourne to Brisbane rail link.
Our group is hoping that the Great Northern line is used to start off
with when plans are made for the line to go ahead.
I believe that the line from Armidale
to Wallangarra could be utilised in the short term to get trains
running btween Melbourne and Brisbane.
The Great Northern Railway line has now become Heritage Listed.
The group is at present planning to get the line opened to Dumaresq, north of Armidale about 15 Kms away. It is also planning to do runs to the Walcha Road Hotel which is south of Armidale.
Three of the groups long term members, Richard Rowe, Des Bowlay and Stuart Cleghorn are to be congratulated for their continued efforts in trying to return a Railmotor/Railcar passenger Service to the Northern Tablelands/ New England Area.
