LIBERTY EXPLAINED

Photo: Redwood Lodge Firewalker, Champion Purebred at Liberty. Owned By Sacha Rowson
A 'liberty horse' is a horse that performs without a rider or any tack, by responding to verbal and visible commands.
It gives owners the chance to put on display the natural style, and action that is sometimes not displayed in the showring. It is a fun event not only to participate in but it is a huge crowd pleaser as well.
The horse is judged on its natural style, action and flamboyance, mostly at the trot. Music is required to set the mood and add to the horse’s attitude. The music should be chosen to suit the horse’s nature and movement etc. The class starts with the horse and handler entering the ring and standing in middle of the ring where they will signal the sounds person that they are ready to begin. Some people leave the halter on and others remove it (depending on the ability of the horse to be caught afterwards!!). The horse is then released with the start of the music and given 2 minutes to strut its stuff. After the music is turned off the handler then has 1 minute to catch their horse (this is to prevent the classes running too long).
The ideal liberty horse enjoys showing off, is confident in trotting around an arena with an excited audience and has natural flowing paces, plus being easily caught! Training for this event is not extensive, some people do not do any and others practise by turning their horse loose in an enclosed arena or safe paddock and encouraging flamboyant movement. This can be done with rattles, plastic bags etc. or by simply clapping your hands. By making it fun the horse soon learns when it expected to perform. Another tip would be to, if possible attempt to practise in the arena that the class is to be held if it is a strange environment. Fitness is important as 2minutes is a surprisingly long time for a horse to keep up an animated trot without tiring.
It is important to learn to read your horse’s body language, when to push it a bit further to get that showy trot or when to back off if it looks like it is about the break into canter. Whips without plastic bags attached are not recommended as the horse cannot see it so it will achieve nothing, and can be dangerous when attempting to turn a horse.
No horses under the age of 3 years (computed at 1st August) will be allowed to enter this is based on the skeletal development of the horse.
Food is allowed to catch your horse and bandaging of legs is allowed also.
Most important this event is supposed to be fun!
NEW TO 2008 SPECTACULAR SHOW!!!

This new scheme will allow you to nominate your horse based on whether you believe he/she has what it takes to win a champion title and supreme.
There will be seperate pools for Purebreds and Derivatives, and it is for Inhand only.
So how does it work?
On the entry form you will find a box that allows to you nominate one or more of your horses, your $30/horse will then go into a prize pool.
This pool will be divided 10% for Champion Title and 30% for Supreme.
For Example, in the purebred pool there are 15 horses nominated this means that the total prize pool will be $450, say your horse wins a champion title, and you had nominated it, you will be awarded $45. Say that same horse goes onto win Supreme, you will then get an extra $135. Total money in your pocket: $180!!
But....if your horse gets champion and you didn't nominate it you will not be eligible to recieve the 10%.
Its you choice, there will be no extra class, so no extra work, just your confidence in your special horse.
