Mental Illness Awareness Day Oct. 3rd

Mental illnesses can take many forms, just as physical illnesses do. Mental illnesses are still feared and misunderstood by many people, but the fear will disappear as people learn more about them. Knowledge is power, if you know what you're up against there's a better chance of winning the battle. If you, or someone you know, has a mental illness, there is good news: all mental illnesses can be treated.
There are many people out there struggling to find out what is really happening to them, but there is also many on medication that don't really know how their truly effecting our body and health.
It is human nature to fear what we don't understand. As such, mental illness is feared by many people and, unfortunately, still carries sign of disgrace. Because of this, many people hesitate to get help for a mental health problem for fear of being looked down upon. It is unfortunate that this happens because effective treatment exists for almost all mental illnesses. Worse, this thought experienced by people with a mental illness can be more destructive than the illness itself.
Mental illness is common. Statistics show that one in every five Canadians will have a mental health problem at some point in their lives. Mental illnesses account for a large percentage of hospital stays every year. Yet, in spite of the fact that every Canadian knows someone who has been, or will be, affected by mental illness, few people know very much about it.
My goal is to find and use as many resources as I can to do my part in helping spread more awareness about these disorders. I want to help people learn more, understand more, and to see that they can be beat without medication. I want people to know that their are alternatives. I want people to know that they're not alone and their are people who understand and care.
I hope this site will teach others to be strong and to be hopeful for tomorrow.

The myths of mental illness |
There are many myths about mental illness. Until people learn the truth, they will continue to deny that mental illness exists at all or to avoid the topic entirely.
Here are some of the common myths -and truths.
People with mental illness are violent and dangerous. -The truth is that, as a group, mentally ill people are no more violent than any other group. In fact, they are far more likely to be the victims of violence than to be violent themselves.
People with mental illness are poor and/or less intelligent. -The truth is, many studies show that most mentally ill people have average or above-average intelligence. Mental illness, like physical illness, can affect anyone regardless of intelligence, social class or income level.
Mental illness is caused by a personal weakness. -The truth is, a mental illness is not a character flaw. It is an illness, and it has nothing to do with being weak or lacking will-power. Although people with mental illness can play a big part in their own recovery, they did not choose to become ill, and they are not lazy because they cannot just "snap out of it."
Mental illness is a single, rare disorder. -The truth is, mental illness is not a single disease but a broad classification for many disorders. Anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, personality disorders, eating disorders and organic brain disorders can cause misery, tears and missed opportunities for thousands of Canadians.
Their are so many people suffering with a mental disorder that feel completely alone. Speaking about mental illnesses does not have to be taboo.

About Me |

I am not a professional of any sort. I am house a wife and stay home mom to 2 girls. I'm trying to do my part in helping to spread more awarness about mental illnesses and the medications being perscribed. This site is dedicated to all those suffering from a mental disorder. Letting people know thier not alone.
I have been struggling with Panic/Anxiety & Depression for about 11 years now. I've been on medication for most of those years, which I am now trying to get off of. I use affirmations, relaxation ,self-help books, family and friends to help keep me positive and focused each day. I have my good days and I have my bad days, thankfully now it's more good than bad. I've done so much research on mental illness, medications and there effect on us. I feel knowledge is power. If you know what you're up against there's a better chance of winning the battle. There's so many different sources of info out there and I'm hoping to put as much as I can on this site. I feel that not only is there still people out there struggling to find out what is really happening to them, but there is also many of us on meds that don't really know how their truely effecting our body and health. My goal is to find and use as many resources as I can to do my part in helping spread more awarness about these disorders, to let people know that they're not alone and their are people who understand, care and their is ways of help.
