No8 .22 Rifle

When you first shoot in the ATC you will use the rifle pictured above, the .22 rifle.

Before you are allowed to shoot this rifle you must first complete 'dry training.'  For the dry training, the .303 DP (Drill Practice) rifle is used as it cannot be fired and the shape of the rifle is similar.  Upon completing sufficient dry training, you will then be able to take your Weapons Handling Test (WHTs) so that you can qualify to shoot this rifle.

L98 General Purpose Cadet Rifle

Once you are 14 and a half , you can progress on to the L98 which is a cut down of the L85 (you may know it as the SA80).

It is different from the SA80 because the cadet rifle has had the semi and full auto modes removed so cadets can only fire one round at a time.  It has also had a cocking handle added.  It has a magazine fitted which holds up to 30 rounds of 5.56 centre fire ammunition.

Before you can use the L98 you must go through a minimum of 8 hours classroom training, due to the complexity of the rifle.  Once you have completed the 8 hours you must take a test which is strictly governed to ensure the highest degree of safety for both the cadet and other personnel present during the live firing.
