(Alcorn State, MS) Falling 12-8 to the Delta Devil (15-20, 11-9), Alcorn State (22-11, 11-7) eliminated any chances of catching Jackson State (33-15, 17-3) for the Eastern Division lead. Leading 7-5 in the 7th, the Braves bullpen surrenderred seven runs in three innings. The Braves now will face-off with the JSU Tigers next week at home and concluded the season with a make-up series in Meridian, MS against Alabama A&M. Currently the Braves sit in 2nd place and have a potential first round game against Grambling State in the SWAC Tournament pending this week results.
After retiring Valley 1-2-3 in the top of the first, Alcorn's bats appeared to have not been effected by the rain delay. Lead-off hitter Josh Brumfield (Flowood, MS) started the game with a single to right field. Brumfield scored on a double to left by shortstop Adrian Bowens (Lumberton, MS). Bowen and Jabari Graham (Tacoma Park, MD) traded spots as he doubled to the left center gap, giving the Braves a 2-0 lead. Alcorn finished the inning 3-0 after Brandon Pearce (New Augusta, MS) doubled off the wall in left.
Leading 3-1 in the 3rd, the Braves added two additional runs. When senior Jeff Jones (Greenville, MS) was hit by a pitch, then advanced on a wild pitch. Alcorn loaded the bases with a Pearce walk and a Causton Merchant (St. Thomas, USVI) infield single. A single to right field by Brian Scott (Greenville, MS) gave Alcorn a 5-1 lead.
Walking the lead-off hitter in the 4th, starter Francisco Garcia (New York, NY) ran into trouble after cruising through the first three innings. After a MVSU single and runners at 1st and 2nd, Garcia failed to field the sacrifice bunt. Allowing a run to score and putting runners at 2nd and 3rd, after throwing the ball down the right field line. Another walked loaded the bases, however Garcia rebounded getting the Valley hitter to ground into a double play. Trailing 5-4, Mississippi Valley tied the game on a triple to right field and then scored with an errant throw to third base.
Garcia settled down in the 5th retiring the side 1-2-3 for the third time. Merchant sparked the top of the 5th, with a triple just inside the the first base bag. Brumfield made it 6-5 with a triple to the right center gap. Alcorn led 7-5 after Bowens singled to right field. Garcia continued his masterful pitching in the sixth, but needed the assistance of Bowen as he ended the inning with a diving play up the middle and getting the out at first stranding runners at 2nd and third.
The strong point of the Braves 2008 pitching staff has been the bullpen. However, Valley was able to put some kinks in its armour as it scored five runs in the top of the 7th. Things didn't start well for the Braves as the first pitch of the inning hit the home plate umpire, causing a delay as the three man crew had to change to a two crew due to injury. Valley loaded the bases on a hit batter, a single and a walk. A second walk made it 7-6. Then a flair to right field was misplayed, thus clearing the bases giving MVSU a 9-7 lead. The Delta Devils concluded the scoring with a single making it 10-7. Valley added additional runs in the 8th and 9th for the final score of 12-8.
The Braves travel to Pine Bluff, Arkanasas for a mid week non-conference double header against the Golden Lions of Arkansas Pine Bluff. Game time is set for 1 pm.

###BRAVES2008###
The 2008 season appeared to be getting off to a similar start for the Braves, losers of three straight opening day games. Well playing in the friendly confines of ASU BASEBALL Park for the first time in over a year, the Braves extended a three game winning streak over the Tigers of TSU by a margin of 9-5
With a quagmire in the outfield, Alcorn was in a mess before they ever took a swing. Starter Francisco Garcia (New York, NY) was touched up for two runs on two hits and an error in the top half of the first. The field condtions played a key role, as Garcia surrendered a triple on a play that would normally be routine in the second, which led to another Tiger run. Alcorn answered in the bottom of the third scoring a run on a TSU error. The Braves and their right hander settled down, retiring five straight batters. Garcia only other blemish came after the first occured in the fifth when he surrender two unearned run after a two out error. Reliever Lee Johnson (Hayward, CA) slammed the door in his first appearance of the year going three innings, allowing two hits and striking out four.
The Braves exploded for seven runs in the seventh, sending 11 men to the plate. TSU set the table for a big inning after they walked catcher David Reed (Chicago, IL) and hit rightfielder Terrell Johnson (East Point, GA). Freshman Causton Merchant (St Thomas, VI) ignited the rally with a two strike single up the middle to score Reed. An infield single by senior Brandon Pearce (New Augusta, MS) pull the Brave within two, 5-3. With the bases loaded and a pitching change by TSU, senior first baseman Jeff Jone open the flood gate giving the Alcorn a lead, 6-5, they would never look back on with a triple to right center field. Jones was driven in on another tqo strike hit by senior Jesse Buchanan (Anniston, AL) and later would score on a Reed double to right center. When the dusk settled in the seventh the Brave were leading 8-6 and would tack on another run in the eight, via a Pearce sacrifice fly.
Tomorrow the BRAVES and TIGERS will finish the three game series with a double header starting at noon. Additionally Tuesday's game against Tougaloo College has been moved to Monday, first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.

“Unfinished Business” is the theme of the 2008 season, as Willie “Rat” McGowan Sr. takes the diamond for the 37th season. With an early departure from the 2007 SWAC Championship Tournament, McGowan’s “RAT PACK” will bring a more intensified focus on their goal, “THE SWAC TITLE.” With the completion of the new stadium, the Braves will have the luxury of playing a true home schedule. Armed with ¾ of a 2007 rotation that led the Southwestern Athletic Conference in ERA with 5.30, McGowan feels the 2008 version of ASU might have what it takes.
2007 REVIEW
2007 was a year of inconsistency for ASU. Trying to establish a sound rotation and a complete reshuffling
of its infield the Braves got off to a 3-4 start. After the rotation settled down with four right-handers, Darryl Jordan (Chicago, IL), Joseph Gonzalez (East Los Angeles, CA), Francisco Garcia (New York, NY) and Donald Nixon (Picayune, MS), the Braves settled down to win eight of its next ten games. Ironically, the ASU defense, which led the SWAC in fielding percentage, fell apart in an early conference sweep at the hands of
Despite its shortcomings, 2007 was a fruitful year for the Braves. Outfielder Marcus Davis (1st team ALL South Central Team, 1st team Black College Baseball, 1st Team ALL SWAC) was drafted in the 18th round by the Pittsburg Pirates. Second baseman Shawn Taylor was also selected as 1st team Black College Baseball and 1st team ALL SWAC. Additional honors went to Joseph Gonzalez, 2nd team ALL SWAC, and relief pitcher Lee Johnson, 2nd team Black College Baseball.
THE SCHEDULE
The true comforts of home will be an asset for the Braves in 2008 as their 46 game schedules includes 28 home games, with 16 of the first 17 being played at the “reservation.” The home slate will see its familiar 12 eastern divisional games (8-4 in 2007) against Alabama A&M on February 29th and March 1st, Alabama State on March 7th & 8th, Mississippi Valley State on April 25th & 26th and Jackson State on April 2nd & 3rd. Other home dates are; February 22nd & 23rd against Texas Southern University, February 26th against Tougaloo College, March 14th & 15th against Jarvis Christian, March 25th against Southern University, April 1st against Rust College and May 6th and 7th against Southeastern Louisiana and Grambling State.
ASU will have completed a quarter of its season before it goes on the road. The Braves first road date starts in
The 2008 SWAC Baseball Championship tournament will be held on the campus of Southern University from May 14-19. The winners of the two four team brackets will face off in the Inaugural SWAC Championship Game.
THE PITCHERS
The ASU pitching rotation will be a key component of 2008 as three of its four starters return from 2007. Returning are junior, Darryl Jordan (5-4, 63.2-IP, 41-SO); seniors, Francisco Garcia (5-3, 62.2-IP, 46-SO) and Donald Nixon (1-1, 27-IP, 11-SO). With the SWAC title the primary goal, this veteran group must improve on last year's numbers; 5.30 ERA (1st in the SWAC), .277 OP AVG (3rd in the SWAC), 25 wins (4th in the SWAC). Alcorn must secure the back end of their rotation, after the loss of Joseph Gonzalez, 2nd team ALL SWAC, and his 8-2 record. Newcomers Kyle Thomas (
Last year saw numerous collapses in the bullpen with12 losses when tied or leading after the 6th inning. After a major overhaul to the bullpen, senior Lee Johnson (
THE CATCHERS
With the return of sophomore David Reed, the Braves have established some stability behind the plate. Catching 44 of 45 games, Reed numbers tapered off late in the season, but was tied for 3rd on the team in extra base hits with 16 (8-2B, 3-3B, & 5-HR). JC transfer, Joel Anthony Del Grande (
THE INFIELD
Defense is a key component of any championship caliber team, and the Braves look to continue the efforts of 2007 when they lead the SWAC with a .961 fielding percentage. Anchoring the corners of the infield are seniors Jeffery Jones and Brandon Pearce. McGowan will not only look for leadership in the field with these seniors, but also look for this combo (.320, 25-2B, 5-HR, 55-RBI) to anchor the middle of his offense. Run production will centered on Pearce who cruised under the radar of seniors Davis, Taylor and Caleb Betschart who combined to hit .340, collecting 35-2B, 10-3B, 25-HR and driving in 126 runs. Jones has continued to mature as a hitter as his sophomore campaign saw him hit over .300 and last season saw his power number and bat control improve. His ability to drive in runs in 2008 will be a huge indicator of the Braves' success.
Finding stability in the middle infield will be priority number one early in the season as the Braves will have their 4th double play tandem in 4 years. Leading the way are junior Adrian Bowens (
Newcomers Edgar Alvarez (
THE OUTFIELDERS
The Braves will have to completely revamp its outfield after the departure of starters Davis, Betschart and leadoff hitter Chris Lloyd. McGowan will have plenty of offense to replace as these three combined to hit .311, and was responsible for scoring 39% of the runs, drove in 39% of the runs, while stealing 62% of the bases. Stepping into the mix will be Brian Scott, last year's number four outfielder and part-time designated hitter. A combination of speed and power in a small frame, “B-Scott” is Alcorn’s stick of dynamite. This young man will be look to be a key table setter for the offense, and rove the cavernous depth of centerfield at ASU Baseball Stadium. Joining Scott in the outfield will be freshman Causton Merchant (
Additional outfielders that will be asked to make various contributions are Omar Thomas (

BRAVES END REGULAR SEASON WITH SWEEP OVER BULLDOGS........
Garcia close out regular season finale with no-hitter .
Natchez, MS- May 5, 2007
After rain washed out the Braves first day against the Bulldog of Alabama A&M, Alcorn and AAMU took the field for a triple header today. Trying to acquire the #2 seed in the SWAC Tournament Alcorn would need a sweep of Alabama A&M and MVSU to lose two of three to Alabama State. Well the Braves (24-18, 15-9) took care of their business sweeping A&M 5-3, 7-2, and 4-0.
Game one the Braves sent starter Darryl Jordan (Chicago, IL) to the mound to try and secure his fifth victory of the season. Jordan cruises through the first four innings, allowing only a sinlge hit in the first. The Braves offense gave Jordan early run support scoring two runs in the first. Setting the tempo for the Braves was centerfielder Chris Lloyd (Morton, MS) leading the game off with a single then swiping his 23rd base of the season. Senior Marcus Davis (Magee, MS) doubled to center field scoring the first run of the game. Alcorn added another on a Brandon Pearce (New Ausguta, MS) ground out. The Bulldog were able to collect their first run in the fourth, after a errant throw and wild pitch from Jordan put a baserunner at third base. Alabama A&M scored the run on a ground out to first. The Bulldog would add another run in the fifth on a homerun to left field. The Braves extend their lead with a solo homerun from catcher David Reed (Chicago, IL) in the fourth and a RBI single by Lloyd in the sixth. Micah Finch (Decatur, GA) pitch the final two inning, picking up his fourth save of the season.
Game two of the todays trifecta saw the Braves get off to another early start, as Lloyd led the game off with a screaming double past the third baseman. Lloyd would score off of a Shawn Taylor (Colorado Spring, CO) single. Alcorn added two additional runs in the fourth when Davis scored on a Pearce double and then later score on a Robert Harris (Valdosta, GA) single. On the mound Joseph Gonazalez (Los Angeles, CA) improved to 7-3 on the season with his sixth complete game of the season. The regular season finale and a chance to grab the EAST #2 seed in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournement rested in the hand of ASU starter Francisco Gonzalez (New York NY). Not only did Garcia answer the bell with his second shut out of the season , but threw a complete game no-hitter over the Bulldogs. Garcia, 5-3, missed throwing a perfect game when he walk a batter in the third. At the plate Alcorn collected all the runs they would need in the second, when they scored two runs on five straight hits. ASU pushed the score to 4-0 in the third when Taylor and Davis his back to back extra base hits.
With the Alabama State and Mississippi Valley State spilting the double header today, the Braves now wait for the the rubber match tomorrow. Which will determine if ASU enter the tournament against Western Division Champions Prairie View or #2 Seed Southern University. Alcorn went 1-1 against the Jaguars this season winning 8-4 in Baton Rouge and losing 5-4 at home. # Clinch SWAC EAST TITLE @ Clinch berth to SWAC Tournament
BULLPEN CANT HOLD LEAD FOR BRAVE........
Jackson State win Eastern division with 13-8 victory.
Pearl, MS- April 28, 2007
Alcorn State chances of winning the SWAC eastern division fell under the high sun of the Jackson's sky, as the Tigers belted the Braves for 19 hits in a 13-8 victory. Even with the loss ASU won it second series in two weeks, however do not control its destiny as Mississippi Valley could still claim the #2 eastern seed with sweeps over the Alabama A&M this weekend and Alabama State next week. Alcorn could stamps it trip to the SWAC Championship tournament in Jackson, Mississipp with AAMU losing two of three from MVSU this weekend or a victory over the Bulldogs in next weeks season finale.
On the mound Alcorn sent 6-3 Joseph Gonzalez (Los Angeles, CA) to secure the sweep. Through the first five innings Gonzalez appeared to be having a typical start, scattering eight hits allowing only three runs. Things would unravel in the sixth as the Tigers led the inning off with a double setting the tempo for JSU. Gonzalez collected the first out of the inning on a ground ball to second base, but was chased from the game after giving up three straight singles to fall behind 5-1. The Tigers welcome reliever Lee Johnson (Hayward, CA) to the game with a two-out two-run single to expand the lead to 7-1 in the sixth.
At the dish the Braves seem to put up little resistance early in the game. After thrashing Jackson for 18 runs in games one and two, the Braves could not seem to get the big hit to respond to JSU. The Tiger's defense played a big part in keeping ASU at bay, by inducing two double plays. Leading the way for Alcorn was senior Shawn Taylor (Colorado Springs, CO), going 4 for 5 with a double and triple. Taylor's one out single in the sixth was the spark the Braves was looking for to light its' fire. When the the smoke cleared in the sixth the Braves touched home plate seven times, using five hits highlighted by Caleb Betscharts two-out bases clearing triple.
Johnson quickly collected two outs in the seventh, but after a two-out single was pulled for righty Francisco Garcia (New York, NY). Garcia quickly seem to give the Tigers some hope with two wild pitches and then surrendering the game tying single. With two outs and two runners on Garcia appeared to have thing back under control until a routine fly ball was lost in the sun by the Braves centerfielder, allowing two runs to score. Jackson would take full advantage, collecting its fourth run in the inning and the lead for good at 11-8. Jackson expanded the lead in the eighth to 13-8 with a two-out double.
The Braves return to Chester Willis Field in Natchez this weekend to face the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M University. The Braves won the first series in Huntsville two game to one. Day one of the series is set for a double header on Friday May 4th. Games times are still pending, based on the out come of the Mississippi High School Playoffs. Please contact Alcorn State Athletics at 601-877-6500, 6501 or ASU Baseball at 601-877-6279 for additional game times this weekend.

BRAVES MOVES WITHIN 2.5 GAMES OF JACKSON STATE
Sweep Blue Bengals 8-6 and 10-5..........
Natchez, MS April 27, 2007
Alcorn State (21-17, 12-8) gain two games on the SWAC Eastern Divisional leaders Jackson State (28-17, 16-7) after a double header sweep at Chester Willis Field. Game one would see the re-emergences of SWAC Pre-Season Player of the Year Marcus Davis (Magee, MS) as he led the Braves to a 8-6 victory going 2 for 3 with 2 HRs and 5 RBI's. While game two saw senior Chris Walker (Jacksonville, FL) nailed home another victory against JSU, game winning drive against JSU in Capital City Classic, going 3 for 3 with a double and 5 RBI's.
In game one the Braves started the fireworks early, as they spotted starter Darryl Jordan (Chicago, IL) three runs off back to back homeruns from Shawn Taylor (Colorado Springs, CO) and Davis. Jordan pitched four scoreless innings, scattering four hits allowing only one runner to reach third. Alcorn would be opportunistic in the 4th inning as JSU committed two errors in the inning leading to a bases loaded at bat show down between the Tigers starter and Davis. After falling behind one ball and two strikes, Davis would quiet both benches and the stands as he fouled off five straight pitches. After getting an even count of 2 balls and 2 strikes, Davis fouled off two additional pitches before he lauched the 12th pitch of the at bat onto Liberty Road. With an 8-0 lead in the fifth inning, Jordan ran into his first problem of the game. Loading the bases with two walks and a hit before being chase by a Jackson State bases clearig double. Lefthander Micah Finch (Decatur, GA) relieved Jordan, who improved to 4-3 on the season, pitching three innings to get his third save of the season.
Game two starter Francisco Garica (New York, NY) would start off slow, struggling to find his control and giving up two runs in the first inning. However, the Braves responded with a solo homerun in the first by Caleb Betschart (Sacramento, CA) and a RBI double by Walker in the second. In the third inning Alcorn exploded for five runs on four hits as Walker connected on his second two out double. The ASU pitching staff would again fail to hold a lead after its offense jump ahead big. After collecting the first out in the fourth, Garcia walked two straight batters before giving up a three run homer to Jackson State. Alcorn refused to go quietly into the night as they added two additional runs in the fifth on Walkers third consecutive hit. Lefty Lee Johnson (Hayard, CA) pitched the final two and two-thirds innings to collect his first save of the season.
The Braves of Alcorn State and the JSU Tigers will play game three of the series in Pearl, Mississippi. The 1st Annual Magnolia Cup will see it first pitch at 1:00 pm at Trustmark Stadium. Alcorn will send Joseph Gonzalez (Los Angeles, CA) on the mound for the sweep and his seventh victory of the season.

BRAVES PITCH THEIR WAY TO SERIES WIN OVER VALLEY ........
ASU still in hunt for divsion title.
Vicksburg, MS- April 22, 2007
Alcorn State University improved to 19-17, 10-8 in the SWAC east, after taking two of three from Mississippi Valley State University. Riding the arms of Darryl Jordan (Chicago, IL), Joseph Gonzalez (Los Angeles, CA) and Francisco Garcia (New York, NY), the Braves stymied Valley's offense allowing only five earned runs in 23 innings pitched. The SWAC's leading defense, led by Marcus Davis's (Magee, MS) eighth outfield assist, made outstanding plays through out the series, turning critical double plays when the games were on the line.
Game one saw starter Darryl Jordan evened his record at 3-3; going six inning, scattering four hits in the 4-2 victory for the Braves. Jordan fell behind early in the first when a miscue by his shortstop led to an unearned run. MVSU added another run in the third, after a lead off double and two fielders choices. Behind 2-0, Jordan buckled down retiring eleven straight batters, with the help of Davis assist and a 543 double play in the fourth. Alcorn closed the gap in the third after Chris Lloyd was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Lloyd scored after swiping his 18 bag of the season and coming home on Shawn Taylor (Colorado Spring, CO) RBI single. Jeff Jones (Greenville, MS) tied the game at two with his fourth homerun of the season in the fourth. The Braves woudd then surged ahead in the fifth with back to back single by Chris Walker (Jacksonville, FL) and Lloyd. After a ASU scacrifice bunt and a MVSU error, the scoreboard read ASU 4 MVSU 2. Gonzalez closed the game out for his first save pitching a scoreless seventh.
Game two, the Delta Demon mustered all they could in the first inning, scoring one run on two hits. Gonzalez (6-3), returned to start game two going six innings scatterig four hits and striking out four in the 2-1 win. MVSU seem to be handcuff by the junior righthander as he retired 14 of 21 batters, leaving four men in scoring position. The Braves were equally kept at bay by the Delta Demon starter as he pitched six inning, and scattered six hits. Caleb Betschart's (Sacramento, CA) hit would prove to be the game breaker in the fourth, as he drove in two to give the Braves the lead for good. Garica earned his first save by inducing a game ending double play with the tying run at third base.
In game three, starter Donald Nixon (Picayue, MS) was staked with a 1-0 lead in the second when Davis led the inning off with a double and scored on a Betschart single. Nixon pitched three flawless innings, before he ran into trouble in the fourth when a 2-2 change-up was deposited into left field by MVSU's first baseman. Nixon was chased in the fourth with one out by Valley, after a walk and a double. Garcia returned to the mound to retire the next two batter but did give up a run in the process. Garcia retired nine straight batters before a single in the seventh led to 3-1 deficit. Alcorn pull within one in the bottom of the seventh. When Walker reached on an error, scored on a bang-bang play at the plate, following a RBI single by Taylor. Valley answered in the 8th with a sacrifice fly to expand the lead 4-2. The Braves hopes of a sweep fell two feet short in the ninth as a Taylor deep fly ball was caught at the warning track with a man on first.
The Braves return to Chester Willis Field in Natchez this weekend to face the Blue Bengals of Jackson State University. The Braves won the first series in Jackson two game to one. Games times are still pending, based on the out come of the Mississippi High School Playoffs. However the Braves will faced the Tigers in Trustmark Stadium on Saturday at 1:00 pm. BRAVES STUNG BY HORNETS LATE ........
Lose series with late inning blow ups.
Natchez, MS- April 8, 2007
After dropping two of three to the Hornets via late inning rallies, the ASU Braves dropped to 17-15 and 8-7 in the SWAC East. Leading 7-2 in game one, the Braves watched as the Hornets scored six runs using back-to-back homeruns in the top of the seventh for the 8-7 victory. After a four hit gem pitched by Joseph Gonzalez (Los Angeles, CA) for the 5-1 win, Alcorn look to take the rubber match. The Braves and Hornets would lock up in another pitching duel, when Alabama State open it up with a grand slam in the seventh. The 13-8 loss was Alcorn ninth loss when the Braves were tied or leading after the fifth inning this season.
Game one saw Braves starter Darryl Jordan (Chicago, IL) return to his old form. After a solo homerun in the first, Jordan breezed through the next five frames striking out four and allowing three hits and one additional run. At the plate, his offense responded in the first with back to back RBI singles by Marcus Davis (Magee, MS) and Caleb Betschart (Sacramento, CA). Second baseman Shawn Taylor (Colorado SPring, CO) sent a solo blast to left centerfield in the 3rd to give the Braves a 3-1 lead. ASU would add a unearned run in the fifth to pull within one on a Betschart error in the 5th. Alcorn's side of the fifth would be most productive as they used three hits and four stolen bases to open the lead to 6-2. Leadoff hitter Chris Lloyd (Morton, MS) push the lead to 7-2 with his 3rd single of the game. With three outs to collect for their 17 victory of the year, Alcorn would be swarmed by the Hornets. ASU started the inning with a single and then would pull within four after a Jordan error on a bunt. A pinch hit single intensified the drama as Jordan would stared down the Hornets number nine hitter. Trying to enduce the game ending double play, Jordan's pitch was stung off the bat to dead center field for a three run homer. With the bullpen scrambling to get ready, Jordan faced off against the Hornets leadoff hitter who had gone 0-3. The first pitch of the at bat sailed clear of the left field fence, tying the game at seven. The Brave's bullpen faired no better luck as two pitchers gave up three singles and the go ahead run.
Game two the Braves got out the block with a sprinter pace, scoring three runs on Betscharts and Davis triples. Gonzalez ( 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 7 K's) seem to cut through the Hornets lineup like a hot knife through butter. As his only blemish was when ASU used a RBI single to score it lead off hitter in the 3rd. Over the final four innings, Gonzalez faced 15 batters allowing only one base hit and only two runner to get into scoring position. Betschart, led the way for the Braves going 2 for 4, scoring two runs and hitting a double and a triple.
Game three saw the Braves fall behind early despite a stong effort from starter Francisco Garcia (New York, NY). A lead off walk, follow by a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch put the first run of the day 90 feet away. Garcia would allow the run on a ground ball to the shortstop. Garcia settled down to retire the next eight batter, four via the strike out. The Hornets collected their first hit off of Garcia in the 4th, and the would add two unearned runs on a wild pitch and two errors by the Braves shortstop. Garcia would get offensive support in the bottom of the 4th as the Braves sent eight men to the plate, scoring four runs on three hits, and a ASU error. With a 4-3 lead, Garcia answer the bell for his team as he threw two additional scoreless inning striking out five of the six batters he faced. Troubled showed it head in the 7th with one out, as Garcia walked back to back batters. After a bunt single by the Hornets second baseman, loaded the bases. The Braves agains scrambled the bullpen to provided relief for its starter. Garcia recorded his 10th strikeout of the game before toeing the rubber for the final out of the inning against Alabama State's leadoff hitter. As in game one the Hornets batter would be the victor, as he launched the second pitch of the at bat over the left center field fence for a grand slam homerun, his second of the series. Alcorn bullpen failed to keep the game in reach as two pitchers gave up an additional five runs on eights hit and a second homerun by the Hornet's first baseman.
The Braves return to Chester Willis Field for a mid week game against Belhaven College in Natchez, MS. The Braves dropped game one of the home and home series to the Blazer 10-6 and have lost five in a row to Belhaven. Game time is set for 6:00pm on Wednesday April 11th. The Braves return to SWAC play on Friday April 21 against Mississippi Valley State in Vicksburg, MS

BRAVES DROP ANOTHER CLOSE ONE, 5-4
Rally fall short against Jaguars.
Natchez, MS- April 3, 2007
After defeating SU 8-4 early in the season and winning two of three from the Alabama A&M, the Braves look to get the second half started right. The Braves dropped to 16-13 after a late inning rally in the eight fell short. The Jaguars jumped ahead 2-0 with the help of a Braves two-out error in the first. Alcorn fell behind 5-0 and scratched for only three hits in the first five inning. Outfielder Marcus Davis (Magee, MS) again carried his team, going 2 for 3, with a homerun, and 4 RBI.
Starter Donald Nixon (Picayune, MS) got off to a slow start walking the Jaguars leadoff batter. Who scored after advancing to second on a ground out. Nixon's defense would let him down as a routine ground ball was missed, allowing SU to get ahead 2-0. Southern would use two hit in the third to add another run. Nixon night was over after the fourth, after surrendering two additional runs in the 4th. Lee Johnson (Hayward, CA) smothered any other attempts by SU to add to the lead, as he pitched five innings, allowing no runs and scattering three hits.
At the plate, Alcorn struggled getting only three hits in the first five inning. In the sixth the Braves bat would waken, after a Brian Scott (Greenville, MS) bunt single. Davis drew Alcorn within three with his SWAC leading 12th homerun of the season. In the 8th, the Braves cashed in on a leadoff walk. Shawn Taylor's (Colorado Springs, CO) second single of the night brought Davis to the plate as the tying run. After a SU balk, Davis foul off several pitches with two strikes, he then singled in two more runs to make the score 5-4. Davis steal of second would put him in scoring position, however the Braves batters would go quitely in the 8th with two ground outs and a pop fly. The ninth provided more drama for the crowd as Scott second single was a bang-bang play with two outs. Taylor with a chance to tie or win the game in the ninth would be retired on a strike out ending the ball game with Davis on deck.
The Braves will face the visiting Hornets of Alabama State. The 8-17 (3-9) Hornets will visit Natchez's Chester Willis Field for a double header starting at 4 pm. The Braves and Hornets will conclude the series on Saturday at 1 pm.

TIMELY HITTING IS KEY FOR BRAVES, AS THEY WIN SERIES ........
Alcorn finishes first half of SWAC 7-5.
Huntsville, AL- April 1, 2007
Alcorn State wins two of three from the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M. With the first half of the season completed in SWAC play, the Braves sit at 7-5, 16-12 overall. In a repeat of last season trip to Huntsville, the Braves would fall to the Bulldogs in game one 4-0. ASU would rebound and take the series winning games two and three 4-1 and 10-2 respectively. On the mound the Brave pitched 22 innings allowing seven earned runs for a ERA for the weekend of 2.86. Offensively, Alcorn was led by SWAC Preseason Player of the Year Marcus Davis (Magee, MS) going 5 for 10 with five runs batted in and three stolen bases.
In game one the Braves were handcuffed by A&M starter Kevin Collins. The Braves sent 12 batters to the plate over the first four innings, only to have 12 batters retired in a row. On the mound Alcorn starter Darryl Jordan (Chicago, IL) retired the first two batters of the game before he ran into some trouble. After a two-out single to left field, Jordan would walk the AAMU clean up hitter before a soft flair to right field would score A&M first run of the day. The Bulldogs would add all the insurance they needed in the 4th when Jordan loaded the bases with a single, a walk and a hit batter. Next, Alabama A&M expanded their lead to 3-0 with a bloop single to center and a fielder choice to second base. Davis ended Collins bid at a no-hitter with a infield single in the fifth. Davis advanced to third on a Brandon Pearce (New Augusta, MS) single to right. Collins ended the Braves threat with a ground ball and a pop fly to end the inning.
Game two started off as another pitchers duel. Alcorn drew first blood in the third when a David Reed (Chicago, IL) doubled down the left field line. A Chris Lloyd (Morton, MS) two out, RBI single put the Braves up 1-0. ASU starter Joe Gonzalez (Los Angeles, CA) mowed through the A&M lineup scattering three singles and a solo homerun in the 4th. Gonzalez ( 7 IP, 4 H, 1R, 3 K) improved to 4-3, throwing his fourth complete game of the season. Offensively the Braves got things on track in the sixth inning scoring three runs on three hits. Lloyd's second single of the day got things started for the ASU. After his second stolen base of the game, a Caleb Betschart (Sacramento, CA) ground ball would advance him to third. Senior Shawn Taylor (Aurora, CO) put the Braves ahead for good with a triple to center field. Davis followed with a RBI single of his own. A two out error by the Bulldogs gave ASU a 4-1 lead and victory.
Good pitching and a stout defense combined with timely hitting is often the moniker of a championship type team. Game three saw the Braves show early flashes of that. As they played nine innings of errorless ball, allow two runs on 11 hits and no walks, and collected three, two-out, RBI hits. Alcorn got things started early in the first when Brian Scott (Greenville, MS) reached on an error. Betschart moved Scott over to third with a ground ball to second after a Scott stolen base. Davis plated the first runs with a sacrifice fly to right field. Pearce would then follow with ASU's first two-out RBI hit with a double to left center. Scott added another two-out RBI single in the 2nd inning. After A&M responded with a run of their own, on starter Micah Finch (Decatur, GA). The Braves would add two more in the 3rd after a lead off error was followed by; a Davis RBI single, a Davis stolen base, then RBI single by Pearce. Finch (7 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 4 K) allowed a second run in the 4th, after AAMU collected three consecutive single. ASU would finalized the scoring in the 5th and 6th with back to back single by Davis and Taylor. Pearce drove in his third run of the evening with a ground out to second, followed by Jeff Jones (Greenville, MS) two-out double down the left field line. In the sixth Taylor and Davis stroke again. Taylor second hit of the game would drive in the games 8th run. Davis followed with his third consecutive hit with two strikes, driving in his 3rd and 4th runs of the day.
The Braves return to Chester Willis Field this weekend for a SWAC eastern divisional series with Alabama State University, after a mid week game against Southern University in Natchez, MS. The Braves swept series one against the Hornets, outscoring them 34-17. Game one of a double header is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start on Friday night April 6th .

BRAVES LOSE 3-2 HEARTBREAKER TO SOUTHEASTERN (LA),
Lions score three in final two innings to steal victory....
Hammonds, LA- March 27, 2007
The Braves fell to 14-11 this season, after another late inning loss to the Lions of Southeastern Lousiana. ASU drew first blood in the the top of the third, when a soft flair to ride field by David Reed (Chicago, IL) turned into a triple. Leadoff hitter Chris Lloyd (Morton, MS) would drive in the games first run with a ground ball to the shortstop. The Braves would take advantage of another leadoff hit in the sixth, when Antereance Bell (Decatur, GA) singled to right field, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Lloyd and scored on a Brian Scott (Greenville, MS) double.
Alcorn rode the arm of junior Donald Nixon (Picayune, MS) as they took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the eight. SELA would tie the game in the eight, using a two out single to right followed by a game tying homerun. After scattering seven hits, zero walks and two strikeouts, Nixon was relieved by Fracisco Garcia (New York, NY) in the ninth. The ninth provide plenty of drama as Garcia surrendered a lead off hit. Then on a push bunt to second the Braves were able to get an acrobatic out at second. After a steal of second, Garcia issued an intentional walk. A game saving play by Bell on a fielder choice, loaded the bases for the ASU defense. Garica would then strike out the batter to collect the second out of the inning, before giving up the game winning single.
The Braves, ranked sixth in the Black College Baseball poll, head north to Huntsville, AL as they take on the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M. The three game series will mark the half way point for SWAC play. Alcorn 14-11 (5-4) are a game behind the first place Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State. Game one is set for 1:00 pm on Friday with game two to follow. The Braves will concluded the series on Saturday with a 12:00 pm start.

ALCORN STATE TAKES SERIES AGAINST RIVAL JSU........
ASU offense explodes for 40 runs in series.
Jackson, MS- March 24, 2007
Alcorn State take the series against the Tigers two games to one after another dissappointing late inning loss to the Blue Bengals in game one 18-16. Offensively the Braves put on a clinic; scoring 40 runs, hitting .387, 41 hits, and 13 for extra bases. Marcus Davis (Magee, MS ) would be the center piece of the Braves offense as he went 6 for 10, with two double, a homerun (11th of the season) and five runs batted in. Not to be out done first baseman Jeff Jones (Greenville, MS) had a career weekend as he did major damage to JSU's ERA. Jones went 7 for 13 with three double, a homerun and eight runs batted in. Game two and three saw strong pitching performances from starters Joseph Gonzalez (Los Angeles, CA) and Fracisco Garcia (New York, NY) respectively.
Game one the Braves jumped out the gate scoring six runs in the first inning with the aid of Jones three run homerun to right. However starter Darryl Jordan (Chicago, IL) struggled in the first, as he surrendered five runs on five walks, a hit batter and two hits. ASU bats would support its struggling pitcher by plating three additional runs in the second. JSU continue to take advantage of hitters counts as they hit two double and score two runs in the second. Alcorn appeared to pull away in the third when they scored six runs again using homeruns from Chris Lloyd (Morton, MS) and Davis. After several pitching changes the Braves bullpen would falter as they would surrender their own big inning. Allowing Jackson State to score six run in the fifth, and a come from behind win in the sixth with three runs.
Game two starter Gonzalez would help ASU rebound after a tough loss. Gonzalez limited the Tigers bats to four single in the complete game shut-out, Alcorn's fourth of the season. At the plate, ASU played situational offense using a walk, a stolen base and a ground ball to score the first run of the game. A JSU error would lead to the second run of the inning. Alcorn again would use the big inning to put some space between them and Jackson State. Scoring four runs, on four hits in the fifth to chase the Tiger's starter. Davis put the final touch on the game with a two run single in the sixth to put the Braves up 9-0.
Big innings seem to be the theme of the weekend, six inning with three runs or more, for the Braves as they touched home plate four times in the first. Highlighted by back to back double by Shawn Taylor (Aurora, CO) and Davis. Jackson answered with a single run in the second. Garcia silenced the JSU offense, retiring 10 of the next 11 Tigers he faced. Scoring five runs in the sixth, small ball would be ASU offense of choice as they loaded the bases with three straight singles, two of the bunt variety. Jackson State would not go quietly in the night as they score two runs off of Garcia in the bottom of the sixth. Jones collected RBI's seven and eight of the series with a double in the eight expanding the lead to 14-4. Reliever Micah Finch (Decatur, GA) cruised to his second save of the season pitching three inning, allowing one run on four hits.
Alcorn improved to 14-10 (5-4) on the season with the victory. The Braves return to the diamond this weekend for a SWAC eastern divisional series with Alabama A&M University, after a mid week game against Southeastern Lousiana in Hammonds. The Braves took the season series against the Bulldogs 5- 1 last season, going 2-1 in Huntsville, AL. Game one is schedule for 1:00 pm start on Friday March 30th.

ASU GETS BACK ON RIGHT TRACK WITH WIN OVER JAGUARS........
Braves rebound after sweep to Valley, with 8-4 win over SU
Baton Rouge, LA- March 20, 2007
After an upsetting series sweep, dropped at Mississippi Valley State this past weekend. ASU Braves would use that as a teaching tool in a 8-4 victory over the Southern University Jauguars. Alcorn used a stellar pitching performance from starter Lee Johnson (Hayward, CA) and some clutching hitting from SWAC Preseason Player of the Year Marcus Davis (Magee, MS) to seal the win for Coach McGowan his third in the last five games against SU.
Thing got off to a slow start for the Braves, as Johnson would surrender a two out rbi hit to SU's right fielder. However, a strong throw from Davis would eliminate the runner trying for two and any further rallies for Southern. Johnson would then limit the Jaguar hitters to one hit over the next three innings. In the fifth SU put together back to back single off of Johnson, then scored a run following a sacrifice bunt and a ground out to the shortstop. Johnson would leave after five innings of work, giving up five hits, walking two and striking out one. A leadoff walk in the sixth proved to be another rally cry for the Jaguars, as senior reliever Micah Finch (Decatur, GA) surrendered two runs on three hits. Alcorn's ability to play sound defense again smothered SU offensive rally as a Caleb Betschart (Sacremento, CA) throw nailed a over aggresive Jagaur runner at first. Finch would bring home the victory for the Braves, as he scattered two single over the last two frames and struck out the side in the eighth for his first career save.
Centerfielder Chris Lloyd (Morton, MS) was the catalyst that Coach McGowan has been looking for, as his speed was the cause of two big offensive innings for the Braves. In the fourth inning Lloyd singled through a drawn in infield, protecting against the bunt. After an errant throw from Southern's third baseman. Davis would follow with his tenth homerun of the year, putting ASU up 3-1 and collecting RBI's 32, 33, & 34. In the fifth Lloyd speed again would cause problems for the Jaguars defense. As he extended the inning with two outs, beating out a throw from the pitcher to firstbase. Brian Scott (Greenville, MS) would put on his own exhibition of speed as he triple over the rightfielders head to drive in two additional runs for the Braves. Alcorn added additional runs in the sixth with a Jeff Jones (Greenville, MS) RBI single to center, and then in the seventh when Jones would score on a wild pitch after he led the inning off with a double. After Southern pull within three runs in the sixth. Second baseman Shawn Taylor (Aurora, CO) put the game out of reach for Cador's bunch, with a solo shot to center in the top of the ninth.
Alcorn improved to 12-9 on the season with the victory. The Braves return to the diamond this weekend for a big SWAC eastern divisional show down with Jackson State University. Games one and two will take place in Jackson, MS on the campus of JSU, with game one scheduled to start at 1:00 pm. Game three will be played on Saturday in Natchez, MS, with the first pitch slated for 6:00 pm.

BRAVES IMPROVE TO 11-6 WITH SWEEP OF TOUGALOO COLLEGE........
ASU taken to extra innings by TC, win game two 7-6 in 8th..
Vicksburg, MS- March 14, 2007
The Braves extended their winning ways by taking a pair from Tougaloo College at Bazinky Park in Vicksburg, MS. In game one starter Darrel Jones (Stone Mountain, GA) got things started good for ASU retiring TC's first three batters in the inning with the help of a 163 double play. ASU would then give Jones all the runs he would need in the first. Sending nine batters to the plate in the first, colleting three hits and scoring five with the help of three Tougaloo errors. Leading the offense for the Braves were Shawn Taylor (Aurora, CO) and Marcus Davis (Magee, MS). Davis collected his first triple of the season in the first and Taylor would blast his fourth homeun of the season in the fifth to end the game 15-3 using the mercy rule. Jone threw a complete game, striking out six batters in the victory.
In game two, Tougaloo rebounded quick to give the Brave more then they expected. With Davis's eight homerun taking flight in the first, ASU again jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the first. Alcorn added another run in the second after Anterrance Bell (Decatur, GA) tripled to centerfield and was followed by a Brandon Dulaney (Belzoni, MS) double to left center. Tougaloo would not go quietly into the night, throwing Dulaney out at the plate on a fly ball to right. TC would answer with a run in the third and then chased starter Alexander Feemster (Ashburn, VA) in the fourth, with back to back hits. Tougaloo's fourth double of the inning would drive in three runs to give them a 6-4 lead. Tougaloo starter retired nine batters in a row, before Taylor collected a hit in the sixth. Pinch hitter Jeffrey Jones (Greenville, MS) would drive in Taylor to pull ASU within one. Down by one in the seventh, Braves designated hitter Robert Harris Jr. (Valdosta, Ga) singled to start the inning. After a TC balk and a Chris Lloyd (Morton, MS) bunt single, Alcorn appeared to have victory in their hand. However, TC would enduce the Braves into three fly out, allowing only one run. ASU's David Reed (Chicago, Il) started the eighth with a double, coming a foot short of the Braves third consecutive game ending homerun. Jones ended the game with his second hit of the night. Left hander Lee Johnson (Hayward, CA) collected the victory pitching one and two thirds inning in relief.

BETSCHART'S WALK-OFF HOMERUN GIVES BRAVES SPLIT AGAINST BISONS........
ASU steals game three in series with a 4-3 victory.
Natchez, MS- March 10, 2007
The Braves return to Chester Willis Field on a mission to redeem themselves after a 13-2 thrashing in game one against Lipscomb University. Day two of the series would be a complete polar opposite of day one, as fans were treated to two great pitched ball games. Game two would see ASU's ace Darryl Jordan (Chicago, IL) pitch a complete game in the loss. While game three would see a familar righty-lefty combination of Francisco Garcia (New York, NY) and Micah Finch (Decatur, GA) in the 4-3 dramatic victory.
In game one, Jordan would get the Braves off to a good start retiring the side in order in the first. Lipscomb manufactured a run in the second with two singles in the second. However, Alcorn's ace would soon silences the hot bats of LU. Pitching four scoreless inning striking out five Bisons batters from the 3rd to the 6th inning. Jordan leadoff walk of Donnie Amos in the seventh would prove cruial, as LU would use the sacrifice bunt to move over pinch runner Justin Sanders. Then after Jordan's eighth strike out of the night, pinch hitter Kevin Gavigan would get a two out single to leftfield to score the go ahead run. Lipscomb would add an insurance run later on an error by catcher David Reed (Chicago, IL).
Offensively, the ASU hitters were stymied by starter Rex Brothers. The lefthander would pitch a complete game, one hitter, strilking out nine Alcorn batters. The Braves only offensive high light was very important due to the tightness of the score. With Alcorn trailing by a run, in the fourth, left fielder Marcus Davis (Magee, MS) would hit his team leading seventh home run of the season to tie the game at one.
Game two saw the Braves get off to an early start with center fielder Chris Loyd (Morton, MS) using his speed to cause problems with the LU defense. Lloyd would reach in his first at bat, on a rush throw by the Bison's third baseman. He would then steal second base, advance to third on a Caleb Betschart (Sacramento, CA) infield single. With one out in the first, Lipscomb would make its second error of the inning as a speedy Marcus Davis hustle down the line. Allowing Lloyd to score on the miss play. The Brave would go quiet for three innings managing only two singles. The fifth would prove the old saying of "speed knows no slump", when a lead-off bunt by Lloyd would start the come from behind rally by ASU. Lloyd swiped his second and third bag in a matter of seconds. Second baseman Shawn Taylor (Aurora, CO) would reach on a walk after a ground out by Betschart. With the opportunity to grab the games momentum, SWAC preseason Player of the Year, Marcus Davis would hit a screaming line drive over the third base bag to score Lloyd and Taylor.
On the mound, Garcia only surrenderred two hits, however they would be his down fall. With two outs in the fourth, Garcia would show signs of fatigue. Walking two hitters a retiring the first two batters and then would get touched for back to back hits that put the Bisons ahead. Micah Finch eliminated any further hopes of Lipscomb, pitching the last three frames striking out three LU batters , including Casey Bond in the seventh with the go ahead run at third.
The seventh inning look very promising for Willie McGowan's "RAT PACK" as he had, Betschart, Taylor and Davis, his top three senior hitters coming up in the line-up. Betshart would step in against reliever Charles Williams and on the second pitch would hit a line drive that cleared the fence in right field to seal the victory for the Braves.
The Braves return to Vicksburg Bazinky Park for a 3:00 pm double header against Tougaloo College on Wednesday March 14th. Then travel to Itta Bena, MS to take on the 4-time defending SWAC East Champs Mississippi Valley State University this weekend. Game times are set for a 4:00 pm double header on Friday, and a 1:00 pm start on Saturday to wrap up the series.

ALCORN STATE THUMP TIGERS IN MIDWEEK DOUBLE HEADER........
Extend winning streak to five with 9-6 and 13-0 win over GSU.
Natchez, MS- March 7, 2007
ASU improved it record to 8-4 with a double header sweep of the Grambling State Tigers. This was a tale of two team going in two different directions. The Braves who fell early and hard to GSU, 18-14 and 2-1, earlier in the season. Are now riding a five game winning streak and have won eight of their last nine. While Grambling has seem to cool off, losing nine in a row since they defeated the Braves
Alcorn sent junior Donald Nixon (Picayune, MS) out for game one, Nixon looked to improved his record to 3-0 against Grambling, as he got off to a good start retiring the first six batters of the game. The third inning saw Nixon get himself into a rut, as GSU tied the game at two after Nixon hit the lead-off batter and then would allow three of the next five batters to tagged him for hits. The Tigers would keep the momentum swinging like a pendulum when they answered ASU run with one of their own in the fourth. After giving up an additional run in the fifth, Nixon retired the next six batters before he gave way to Lee Johnson (Hayward, CA) in the seventh.
Game two saw the redemption of starter Francisco Garcia (New York, NY). After being pull early in the third inning against Alabama State with control problems, Garcia was back on the bump to get things straight. Garcia, not only managed to pitch seven innnings, but struck out three, scattered three hits in the shut-out.
Offensively the Braves went their fifth game scoring at least nine runs or more. Leading the charge in game one was freshman Robert Harris Jr. (Valdosta, GA) driving in the games first two runs with a double in the first and later added his third RBI in the 4th with a walk. Brandon Pearce (New Augusta, MS), continues to swing a sizzling bats as he went 2 for 3 with two double and two runs batted in. Game two was started off with a bang, more of a Marcus Davis (Magee, MS) bang. Davis's sixth round tripper of the year put Alcorn up for good in the first, 2-0. Harris put together another quality performance as he went 2-4 while Pearce tacked on an additional three hist in game two. Touching them all for the first time was senior Christopher Walker (Jacksonville, FL), sending a two run blast to left center in the 4th. In the two games Alcorn State scored 22 runs, 20 hits, nine for extra bases and cashed in on 12 Tigers walks.
The Braves return to Natchez's Chester Willis Field for a three game set against Lipscomb University this Weekend. Game times are set for 5:00 pm start on Friday, 7:00 pm start on Saturday and a 1:00 pm start on Sunday to wrap up the series.

ALCORN STATE COMPLETES SWEEP OF HORNETS........
Braves drop hammer on ASU 9-6 and 10-5.
Montgomery, AL- March 4, 2007
After dropping nine big flies on Alabama State in game one, the Braves would scratch and claw their way past Preseason 1st team All-SWAC pitcher Joshua Foneberger with several infield singles. Alcorn used a combination of timely hits (six with runners in scoring position) and aggressive base running to take game two of the series 9-6. Game three would see more of the same as the Braves jump out to a three run lead in the first and then would score a run in the five of the final six frames to take home the sweep with a 10-5 victory.
After getting a 2-0 lead, starter Darryl Jordan (Chicago, IL) got off to a shakey start. As he surrendered a lead-off single and then loaded the bases with a walk and a hit batter. The Hornets would then tie the score at two, on Jordan, after he surrendered another walk and a wild pitch. Jordan would settle down as he retired the next eight ASU batters in a row. Alcorn would surrender two additional runs in the fourth as it's "ACE" would allow two single and two walks in the inning. Left hander Lee Johnson (Hayward, CA) would come on in the sixth to put out the Hornets attempt at a rally, as he retired the last five batters of the game. Jordan would wrap up the night going 5.3 inning striking out five and allowing five earn runs as he improved to 2-1 on the season.
In game two right hander Francisco Garcia (New York, NY) would toe the rubber. The Braves offense would give Garcia early run support in the first as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead. However, trouble would find the righty as he would give up three runs in three innings after walking the lead-off hitter in each inning. Not wanting the potential sweep to get away, head coach Willie McGowan went to the bullpen early bringing in veteran lefty Micah Finch (Decatur, GA). The senior would seal the deal for McGowan, going five innings striking out five Hornet batters and allowing no earned runs.
Offensively the Brave were led by Pre-Season Player of the Year Marcus Davis (Magee, MS). Davis was instrumental in both victories as he scored four runs in game one, using a combination of speed (2 stolen bases & a infield single), power (home run in the 6th) and productivity (4 RBI's). Game two Davis went 2-3, with a double, 2 RBI's and two stolen bases (home plate in the 3rd). Not to be out done in his first SWAC series third baseman Brandon Pearce (New Augusta, MS) would follow a 5 for 5 performance on Saturday by going 4 for 8 on Sunday. Infielder Shawn Taylor (Aurora, CO) would finish the weekend driving in a total of seven runs as well for the Braves.
With the victories the Braves improve to 6-4 and 3-0 in the SWAC East. Alcorn State returns to the field on March 7th as they look for a little revenge against the Tigers of Grambling State. Game time is set for 2:00 pm at Chester Willis field in Natchez, MS.

BRAVES FALLTO 3-4 AFTER 10-4 LOSS TO BELHAVEN........
Davis continue with early season onslaught, going 2-4 with three RBI's
Jackson, MS- February 28, 2007
ASU dropped its fourth game of the season falling to the Blazers of Belhaven College 10-4 at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson, MS. Offensively, the Braves are still searching for their mojo as they scatched out only eight hits while leaving 10 men on bases.
Starter, Aaron Trevino got the Braves off to a good start as he retired the side in the first inning. However, Belhaven would start the 2nd off with a triple that was nearly a spectacular play by rightfielder Christopher Lloyd. After gettng the next two batter out, Trevino would surrender the tying run on a wild pitch. Trevino control would hurt him again in the 3rd as a wild pitch following a triple would give BC the lead for good. Belhaven chased Trevino in the fifth after one out with a walk and their third triple of the game. Belhaven would open the game up to 10-1 with six runs on six hits in the 6th inning. Reliever Lee Johnson would put out the fire retiring nine of the next 12 batters he faced in the final three frames.
Offensively, the Braves continue to miss opportunities as they faiedl at several chances to move runners over and left 10 men on base. However, leftfielder Marcus Davis has continue were he left off in 2006. As he led the team with two hits, a rbi double in the first and a two run homer to right in the ninth. Additionally, Brandon Pearce added two singles and freshman catcher David Reed went 2-3, collecting his first collegiate hit with a bunt single in the second.
Next the Brave start SWAC Eastern Divisional play with Alabama State this weekend in Montgomery, AL. The Braves finished 5-1 against the Hornets last season, including a 2-0 record against ASU in Montgomery. Game time is set for a 1:00 pm start for the double header on Saturday March 3rd and 1:00 pm on Sunday March 4th

ASU PITCHING STAFF SEALS THE DEAL WITH GOLDEN LIONS........
Gonzalez throws complete game in 9-2 victory.
Lorman, MS- February 24, 2007
After dropping the first three games of the 2007 season and surrendering 30 runs in the first two. The Braves got back to its winning ways and took out a little revenge against UAPB, loss 15-2 and 18-4 in 2006, with a three game sweep this weekend. All three games were SWAC play at its finest, as the two team combined for 14 runs (5 earned) in the series, turned 8 double plays, and committed only 6 errors.
Offensively the Braves were held at bay by the pitching of the Golden Lions. In game one, ASU only managed to squeeze out three hits, however each were timely. As Caleb Betschart single in the 4th was follow by a sacrafice bunt by second baseman Shawn Taylor. Betschart would advance on a wild pitch and then score on a Brandon Pearce sacrifice fly. Later in the bottom of the sixth, Pre-Season SWAC Player of the Year, Marcus Davis would add an insurance run with his second homerun of the season. Game two saw late inning heroics, as senior Chris Walker would follow pinch runner Chris Lloyd steal of second with a walk off single.
In game three the Braves spotted UAPB an early 2-0 lead in the 3rd, after three consecutive single and a throwing error by pitcher Gonzalez. Alcorn appeared ready to answer the bell in the 4th with singles from Brandon Pearce and Robert Harris. After closing the gap to one with a sacrifice fly to right field from catcher David Reed, UAPB smothered any further hopes of a rally with a spectacular double play turned by infielders Reggie Barker and Rashad Billingsley. In the sixth the Braves would tied the game at two the legs of Marcus Davis. Davis would out run a routine double play following a Taylor single. After advancing to second on a base on balll to Harris, Davis would then steal third. He would then score on a wild pitch by UAPB left handed reliever Terrance Morse. The Braves would then take the lead in the 7th with a two out single by Davis. Alcorn would add five additional runs off of three Pine Bluff relievers to take a 9-2 lead.
Game one starter, Darryl Jordan scatter three hits in a 2-0 complete game shut out. Followed by a combined 1-0 shut out from pitchers Micah Finch and Francisco Garcia in game two. After seeing shut outs thrown by pitchers Jordan, Finch, and Garcia. Game three starter Joseph Gonzalez would not be out shined as he looked to sealed the sweep. Looking to give Coach McGowan four to five quality innings and solidify a spot in the weekend rotation. Gonzalez did more then that, scattering eight hits and struck out eight Golden Lions in nine innings of work for the compete game win 9-2.
Next week Alcorn head north to take on the Blazers of Belhaven College. Game time is set for 6:00 pm at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson, Mississippi.

BRAVES BATS PUT ON ICE IN HOME OPENER........
Fall 12-0 to Southeastern Lousiana
Lorman, MS- February 15, 2007
The 2007 season got off to a cold start for the ASU Braves in Natchez on Valentine's Day. In their home debut against the Lions of SELA the Braves only managed to squeeze out six hits in nearly freezing weather. However, the biggest setback for the Braves was not at the plate but on the mounds as four pitchers combined for five walks and five hit batters of which six crossed homeplate. A bright spot for the 2007 edition of the "RATPACK" was the new configured infield was nearly flawless, as the only error was a errant throw after a spectacular diving play.
Offensively the Braves broke in four new bats, however leading the charge was senior Shawn Taylor going 2 for 3 with a double in the fifth inning. ASU biggest threat came in the first inning after two walks to outfielders Caleb Betschart and Marcus Davis. Following a Betschart's steal of third, freshman catcher David Reed flied out softly to right field to end the inning. After that Alcorn didn't pose a threat as they only managed to get three runners past first base.
Braves starter Darryl Jordan (0-1) got off to a shakey start giving up a lead off single and then hitting the next batter. Second baseman Shawn Taylor, last years centerfielder, came to his rescue turning a 4-3 double play to kill the rally in the first. However, Jordan was not as fortunate in the second as he put two of the first three batters on with a hit batter and a walk. Southeastern would then cash in with a three run homer to left center. SELA would chase Jordan after collecting two addition runs in the second and single that glance off of Jordan's leg in the third. Lefthander Lee Johnson would smother the Lions rally, pitching two shut-out innings. However, the Braves would let the game get away as the bullpen surrender two in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Next week Alcorn head west to take on the steaming hot Tigers of Grambling State, who are off to a 5-1 start. Game one of a double header is slated for a 1 pm start.
