Work on the Streets

We couldn't remain indifferent any longer to the cries of street kids calling for help from the mouths of underground channels, from under dirty bridges and from crowded train station waiting rooms. One day we stopped, we gave them something to eat and we took a real interest in their lives. We said in our hearts "we have to do something". This cry turned into a small group of volunteers visiting kids on the streets which then grew into the founding of a non profit organisation called "Mana".

At present we continue to visit the children weekly on the streets with the aim of getting to know the newly arrived kids and to encourage them to participate in our day center programs.

Elena's Story

"I was standing with my father when the police came to take him away. I didn't know my mother then and even now I don't know where she is so I went to stay with my aunt. One day, she took me to the train station and told me to wait because she was going to buy me something. She never came back...

I felt alone and started to cry, I was scared and somehow ended up on a train. A few hours later, I got off the train in a large town where I made friends quickly with other kids who were in the same predicament as me. During the day, I begged for food from the vegetable market and for money from the traffic lights. At night, I slept underground near the train station toilets.

One day another child took me to the Day Center Ionel where I had a shower, was given clean clothes and something to eat. From there I was taken to an orphanage and then home again but at home there was no place for me. After a few years of going in and out of orphanages I finally found my place at the Girl's House Osana. Here I heard the story about a young man in the bible called Joseph who was sold into slavery by his brothers. When Joseph was a powerful man, he didn't take revenge because God's love had changed his life. God's love also changed my life."
