Accepting Asperger's Syndrome

This is a crash course to accepting your Asperger's!

Links, Message Boards, and Area Support Groups

Links of particular interest:

If the links don't work, just copy paste the URLs into another browser window and they WILL work. I keep trying to change the URLs to the correct ones, and they just don't take. Your webmaster is not very technologically proficient but at least she can write. :)

www.wrongplanet.net   One of the largest Asperger's and Autism sites on the web, with a very active message board.

OASIS http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/  An Asperger's Syndrome super site, with information, resources, articles, and much else

www.neurodiversity.com  The name speaks for itself - a compendium of interesting and thought provoking links on everything autism

GRASP www.grasp.org  The Global Regional Asperger's Partnership, a network of support groups for adults based out of New York City but covering several cities; has many interesting articles and resources on their site.

www.normalfilms.com   Website for the film "Normal People Scare Me," a 90 minute documentary about the lives of autistic spectrum people made by a 17 year old autistic teenager. Worth watching.

"Thoughts on Finding Myself Differently Brained" http://www.inlv.demon.nl/subm-brain.jane.eng.html   Some great essays on what  it means to be AS in a neurotypical world

Aspergia  www.aspergia.com  The message board is no longer up but there are still some great articles about looking at what AS is in a positive light.

Institute for the Study of the Neurologically Typical  http://isnt.autistics.org/dsn-psy.html  A bit of a spoof on what disorder is and what it isn't.

Asperger's Syndrome and Self Esteem http://www.mugsy.org/wendy/esteem.htm

Great autistic pride products at Cafe Press that will make you laugh: http://www.cafepress.com/buy/autism/aspergers/-/pg_3/go_0

ASPEN
www.ASPENnj.org
ASPEN® is a national volunteer 501(c)3 non-profit organization providing information, support and advocacy to families and individuals whose lives are affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders (Asperger Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder-NOS, High Functioning Autism), and Nonverbal Learning Disabilities.

For AS support groups in your area (meeting other people with AS in person can be a wonderful thing. It is much easier to communicate with other AS people and I have found it to be a very worthwhile experience):

Go to the OASIS site:
http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger
Click "Support Groups" on the left, and click on "Local Support Groups."

Update: April 2008: Check out this great new autism movie coming out:
