Ascham Bowmen

We are the oldest existing archery club in Essex, founded in 1942.

• We take our name from Roger Ascham (pronounced askam),
• He was born in 1515 during the reign of Henry VIII. In 1548
• He was tutor to the Princess Elizabeth.
• He wrote the first book in the English language on archery, entitled "Toxophilus", which was published in 1545.
• Roger Ascham lived part of his life in what is now Waltham Forest.

Ascham Bowmen are based in Snaresbrook in the grounds of Forest School and forms part of the Essex County Archery Association (ECAA) and is affiliated to the Southern Counties Archery Society (SCAS) and the Archery GB (Formerly GNAS) which is the National body. All archery clubs affiliated to Archery GB are subject to its rules and regulations with regard to shooting and full details of these can be found in the Rules of Shooting.

We shoot every Sunday in the grounds of Forest School in Snaresbrook, in the summer we also shoot on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. In the Winter we shoot indoors at Forest School on Wednesdays from 20:00.
