Pre-Season Friendlies

24/7/05 ABBOTTSINCH PAISLEY

ARTHURLIE  V   MARYHILL

This afternoon sen the start of the pre-season friendlies take place at abbottsinch in Paisley, the visitors being the newly formed team from Maryhill. It didn't take long for the home team to take the lead when a Rae in-direct freekick was turned into the net by McMurray, 1-0,with the game now being stretched Maryhill had chances to draw level but couldn't find the way to goal, but eventually did to draw level, midfielder McClusksey was unlucky to have a goal chopped off for offside  just before half time when a pinpoint Rae cross was headed high into the net half-time 1-1.

The second half saw Arthurlie with a bit of a wind at their back take the game to the division 3 newcomers, and from a corner debitant Bisland headed home 2-1, there lead was short lived when from a tight angle home keeper Lagan was beaten by a cross which turned into a shot 2-2, Arthurlie were denied a stone wall penalty when referee McKillop some how missed a Maryhill defender jump and punch the ball away from danger, Arthurlie regained the lead on 75mins when sharpshooter Rae was on hand to stab the ball home after the keeper could only parry a shot 3-2,Arthurlie then let the lead slip again when poor defending from a corner let Maryhill have a share of the spoils.Full-Time 3-3

As was the practice last season we always try to get in first with the interviews and we managed to get a few words with the Arthurlie manager Dougie Cumming......."it was good to get the girls back on the park and into game situations, thats why we arrange these friendlies,it was a good work out with a lot of positives being taken from todays match although there was a few negatives aswell, but we will be working hard on the training park to iron out these minor problems, credit to Maryhill who competed well, so we can look forward to improving on our match sharpness, which will come back quickly with the more games we play"

GLASGOW CITY  V  ARTHURLIE

With only two weeks left before they set off in the quest for european glory Glasgow City arranged this friendly with Arthurlie.

Straight from the off City took the game to Arthurlie, and opened the scoring on 2 mins when a shot came off the bar and with the away defence sleeping the striker had an easy tap in, with city enjoying most of the pocession Arthurlie were always on the defensive, but midway through the 1st half they got there reward for the hard work, when Rae sent a looping shot over keeper Livingstone, and in at the back post 1-1,ths gave City something to think about, and upped a gear scoring a further 3 goals in the first half.HALF TIME 4-1

The second half was more of the same with City well in charge, a further 6 goals passed between the Arthurlie posts one of which was a dubious penalty, most of the 6 goals coming in the last 25mins when the fitness of the home team showed FINAL SCORE 10-1.

As is the norm we managed with the Arthurlie manager Dougie Cumming."well i thought that was a worth while exercise, when you play against the best,it gives you a good yard stick, i thought we competed really well and made it hard for them at every oppurtunity so it was a good exercise for us and we learned alot tonight and the score line means absoulutely nothing, most important thing was that we competed and i think we done that"

League Fixtures

4/9/05 BANKTON MAINS LIVINGSTON

MUIRIESTON  V   ARTHURLIE

After playing 2 League Cup games Arthurlie opened their League campaign for the season with an away game to Muirieston.

Arthurlie started this encounter by taking the game to their hosts, and with a bit more luck in front of goal, they could have been a couple up,Arthurlie enjoyed plenty of possesion in the opening half with Muirieston quite happy to allow them to have the ball as they set up with 10 players in defence, playing on the break away, but with the defence well drilled the Arthurlie goal wasnt under any threat in the opening stages, but on 25 minutes it was to be breached from a player who was clearly in an offside position was allowed to race in on goal, the striker cooly drew Stewart and found the corner of the net 1-0,Arthurlie still went forward but still couldnt find a way past the home keeper HALF-TIME 1-0.

After a stern half time chin wag Arthurlie were to play 90% of this half camped in the hosts half of the park, still Arthurlie pressed their opponents back but when theres 10 defenders behind the ball Arthurlie pressed the home side side back but stiill couldnt find the way to goal but it wasnt for lack of trying,on 60 minutes Arthurlie were to find themselves 2-0 down when in one of their few attacks Muirieston won a free kick 25 yards from goal and when the ball was played to Devine she lashed the ball high into the net passed the diving Stewart 2-0,this spurred Arthurlie into total attack but still they couldnt find a goal,72 mins seen McMurray replaed by Masterson as the away side continued to press with Somers,Crossan, and Rae all passing up good opportunitys 80 mins seen Rae fire home from 22 yards to give Arthurlie some hope in the final minutes,85 mins seen a Crossan looping header return off the face of the crossbar with the keeper clearly beaten FULL-TIME 2-1

Manager Dougie Cumming managed a few words at the final whistle,"After having so much possesion we really got going in the 2nd half and played the way i know we are capable of,with a bit more luck in front of goal we would have secured the points but it wasnt our day we know what aspects we have to work on in training so we will knuckle down and hopefully get back to winning ways"

FALKIRK   V  ARTHURLIE

With a place in the quarter final of the league cup safely secured Arthurlie travelled through to Denny this afternoon on league duty.

Arthurlie set out at a steady pace and took the game to their hosts, early chances fell Arthurlies way but still no opening could be forced, both Gumley and Craig passed up scoreable chances,21 mins seen the deadlock broken when Rae weaved past a defender and fired an unstoppable shot low across the keeper to make the score 1-0 Arthurlie, but theor lead only lasted for 3 mins when slack play in the defence allowed Falkirk to level on 24mins, both teams had chances to add to their totals but chances were missed from both sides 38 mins seen Falkirk take an undeserved lead when keeper Stewart fumbled a weak shot twice to allow Cassey to slide the ball into the open net, with half time fast approaching Arthurlie went looking for an equaliser and got their rewards when striker Rae spotted the home keeper misplaced in her goal on 42mins, the striker curled a shot past her into the net,HALF-TIME 2-2

Arthurlie were forced into a substitution for the start of the 2nd half, with the ill feeling McKim being replaced by Bisalnd in midfield, with the game evenly poised at 2-2 Arthurlie won a free-kick 54mins which was delivered to the back post where it was cleared but only to the in rushing Gumley who fired a rocket shot from 16 yards past the keeper 3-2, Gumley again was to play a big part in the next goal  on 54mins when her long diagonal ball was chased by Rae who nipped the ball past the goalkeeper on the by-line and got in front of goal to slot home 4-2,with Falkirk now chasing the game they manged to pen Arthurlie in but some reulute defending and spurned chances kept their league intact,85 mins seen the injured Craig replaced by Clark, with full time approaching thre was still time for striker Rae to add to her toatl when Bisland played an inch perfect pass the striker wasted no time in despatching past the striken goalkeeper 5-2,with the game deep into injury time there was to bit of controversey when Falkirk won  a free-kick out wide on the right, when the kick was played and with the ball in the air,a whistle sounded, and midfielder crossan caught the ball, only for the referee to award a penalty to Falkirk, as the whistle had come from the terracing where another teams players were watching the game from,Falkirk scored to make the FULL-TIME score 5-3.

We managed a few quick words with the Arthurlie manager " aye a thot we controlled the game from start to finish although i felt we did go to sleep for a peroid and its always nice to score good goals"

ARTHURLIE V  INVERNESS

With vital league points on the table this afternoon Arthurlie entertained last seasons Div 2 champions Inverness.

Arthurlie started the game slowly and could have found themselves a couple of goals down inside the opening minutes but the score-line remained blank due to bad finishing in front of goal by the away side, striker Rae was first to threaten for the home side on 9mins but blazed her shot over te bar,the home side were to find themselves a goal down on 14 mins when Calder kept her cool to score from close range 1-0 Inverness, with the home side trailing they began to take the game to Inverness on managed to get level on 23mins when Rae raced on to a through ball and struck her shot by the hapless Jappy 1-1, Rae was to find herself on the recieving end of a horrendous tackle from Mason with the latter escaping without punishment, with the game now settled down to a good competitive match, Arthurlie struck a body blow to their opponents when on 43mins striker Rae again found the net with a carbon copy of the first goal,2-1 Half Time

A tactical switch at half-time saw McCluskey replace Gumley and Crossan moving to wide left,Inverness were mystified to see a goal chopped off on 55mins when the referee awarded Arthurlie a free-kick inside the box,Inverness continued to press for the equalizer but found Stewart in the home sides goal up to the task when she denied the striker a definate goal with a point blank save from close range, further dissmay was to come Invernesses way on 68mins when the influencial Cadder was shown red for 2 bookable offences much to the travelling supports anger, 5 mins later Crossan raced beyond the Inverness defence to cleverly chip the unlucky Jappy 3-1, 75mins saw Masterson replace the hard working McMurray, further joy for the home side when on 84 mins Rae completed her hat-trick,when she found herself 1 on 1 with the keeper, and cooly slotted home 4-1, Rae was then replaced by Donnelly who seen out the remainder of the match FULL-TIME 4-1

As the norm after match we manged a few words with the Arthurlie manager,"delighted to get three points, considering we could have been a couple down in the opening minutes,i thought we played well when we got our noses in front although credit to Inverness who never gave up this victory sets us up nicely for nexts weeks quarter-final tie against Inverness although we realise that it will take another effort just like todays to progress in the cup,but things are coming along nicely at the moment"

ARTHURLIE  V  CLYDE

Arthurlie entertained their close neighbours Clyde this afternoon in a vital league match for both clubs.

Arthurlie were first to threaten when keeper Coutts had to look smart to hang on to a Somers drive on 7mins, Arthurlie went to sleep on 9mins and allowed Clyde to take a short corner which was glanced into the net by the unmarked Grainger, with 18mins on the clock Rae created a chance for herself but shot weakly with her weaker left foot allowing coutts to save easily, on 20mins McMurray was booked for fouling and from the resulting free-kick , Lagan had to be at her best to dive full length and divert the free-kick over the bar, a tactical switch on 36 mins paid dividends for the home side, when McMurray slotted the ball past Coutts, but the ball never had the legs to make it to the goal but the alert Rae was on hand to score 1-1.HALF-TIME 1-1.

Clyde threatened early in the 2nd half but Lagan saved when 1 on 1 with Coia, Garment was next to threaten the Clyde goal but her header was easily held by Coutts, Rae found herself clean through when a perfect pass from McKim found her with only the keeper to beat but this time the striker elected to chip but her chip slipped agonisingly wide, an injury to Donnelly seen her replaced by Gumley on 62 mins, 75 mins seen Clyde take the lead when Odonnell scored from close range 1-2, Rae was now being singled out for some heavy tackles, Ogilve booked on 76mins for a foul, 80mins seen Coia booked for a foul on Clark, 84 mins seen Arthurlie deservedly draw level when Coutts could only parry a long range effort from Rae but Somers was on hand to net the rebound 2-2, Rae again was upended by McDonald with the Clyde player lucky not to be booked, with minutes remaining there was still time for the games most controversial moment, with a long ball cleared by Lagan the ball was volleyed back up field,Coia who was at least 8yards offide when the ball was played won the race against the Arthurlie keeper, with the ball ending up in the net 3-2. FULL-TIME 2-3

We manged a few words with the Arthurlie manager after the game,"well a have to be proud of my players today the way they fought back from being down twice just a pity to lose a game in the manner in which we did, it wasnt even as if it was a close decision but what can we do about things like this well at least a will be able to get to sleep without a problem, its the players in the dressing room a feel gutted for after the effort they put in to be denied a draw was nothing short of criminal"

League Cup

21/8/05 ST JAMES PARK PAISLEY

ARTHURLIE  V  CARNOUSTIE

With the draw pairing these two first division sides in the opening round,it would be intresting to see which one would gain the upper hand with two league matches between the sides to come later on in the season.

Arthurlie got off to the worst possible start in this encounter when they found themselves a goal down in the opening thirty seconds when the home defence was caught out by a long through ball 1-0 carnoustie, but all this done was stir up the home side who levelled within a minute (sorry for being so brief but with the match reporter still on holiday what more can be expected), arthurlie now took the game by the scruff of the neck and found themselves 6-1 up at half time.

The second half showed more of the same from the home side who added another 6 goals in the second half, FULL-TIME SCORE 12-1 scorers on the day for Arthurlie were Claire Rae 7, Laura Crossan 2, Lauren McMurray 1, Coleen Donnelly 1, Carol McCluskey 1.

Stand in boss for the day Alex Stewart had a few words to say "to go a goal down early on was a bit of a disappointment but credit to the girls as they stuck to the task in hand and ran out worthy winners in the end"

Arthurlie now face division 3 side Arbroath in round 2 of the competition

ARTHURLIE  V  ARBROATH

Folowing last weeks result in round 1 of the competition Arthurlie entertained 3rd division side Arbroath this afternoon, for a place in the last 16 of the league cup.

With horrendous weather conditions,Arthurlie knew nothing less than a victory would do this afternoon, early chances fell to Arbroath, with the home side struggling to come to grips with the driving rain, and gale force winds, the home sides first chance fell to Bisland on 18mins but the midfielder blazed over from close range,a combination of good goalkeeping and poor finishing kept the score line blank until the 25th minute,Bisland made amends for her earlier miss, the ball falling to her on 20yards and this time she made no mistake drilling her shot into the far corner of the goal 1-0 Arthurlie, further efforts on goal couldnt produce any more goals for the home side Half-Time 1-0.

The 2nd half was to be played entirely in the away sides half due to the weather conditions but still the Arbroath goal remained intact,60 mins seen Mains replace Masterson in midfield, still the home side couldnt add to there tally,65 mins seen Rae replace Crossan and after being on for 3 minutes Rae found the back of the net via the underside of the bar from 20 yards 2-0 Arthurlie,70 mins seen new sugning McKim replace Somers in midfield for her debut, 80 mins seen Mains open her Arhturlie account when the keeper could only parry a shot she was on hand to slide the ball home 3-0 Arthurlie,in the dying stages McMurray looked to have added to the total but could only watch in dismay as her shot slid by the post with the keeper beaten FULL-TIME ARTHURLIE 3  ARBROATH 0

A few words from manager Dougie Cumming "Considering it wasnt a day for silky passing football our main objective was to get a place in the next round of the cup and to achieve that is something to be happy with, its also always nice to keep a clean sheet as any goalkeeper and defence will tell you, we now look forward to the start of our assault on the league next week with an away match to Muirieston"

PAISLEY SAINTS V ARTHURLIE

After the draw was made this was the tie that stood out, with Saints starting the season undefeated they would fancy taking the div 1 side to the limits.

Arthurlie couldnt have wished for a better start to this derby cup tie and they went ahead after only 23 seconds, Bisland dispossesed a saints midfielder and played an inch perfect pass into the path of striker Rae who drew the goalkeeper and cooly slotted low into the net,1-0 Arthurlie, with saints clearly rattled they forced there way forward, and on 10 mins they forced a corner, and with no defender picking up at the back post the saints midfielder had an easy header to bring saints level, much to the delight of the hefty saints support,1-1,the division 1 side again took the game to the home team and on 24 mins Rae and McMurray carved open the saints defence down the right and with Rae skipping to the bye line her precise cross was met by McMurray who slotted home in front of the saints keeper 2-1, with the game mainly being played in midfield now no further opportunitys were created in the first half 2-1 half-time.

Arthurlie opened the second half by takin the game to their opponents, and on 60 mins they forced a corner,Raes precise kick found the unmarked Bisland who rose majestically to power the header high into the net 3-1 Arthurlie, with the game looking beyond the young saints side now all credit to them as they continued to force Arthurlie back but couldnt find a way past the impressive Stewart in the Arthurlie goal, 70mins saw Clark replace the hard working Somers in midfield, with Saints pushing forward now trying to get back into the game they were leaving gaps at the back and with 12 mins remaining Crossan exploited the defence when she ran on to a long ball and raced in on goal to lash her shot high beyond the keeper into the net 4-1,Gumley was replaced by Mains on 80 mins, next to exploited the now tiring defence was striker Rae who cooly lobbed the on rushing keeper from 25 yards 5-1, Masterson replaced the tiring Bisland on 83 mins, with the game now finished as a contest there was still time for Stewart to produce a stunning double stop to foil the home sides strikers FULL-TIME 5-1

We managed to catch a few words with the delighted Arthurlie manger "the victory this afternoon was down to a great team effort,it was always going to be an intresting tie with saints coming into it undefeated, but im glad that we got down to the task and scored 5 good goals,so hopefu;;y the draw will be kind to us all credit to the young saints side who battled gamely on even when the game was out of there reach, they wont spend too many seasons in the lower divisioms if they continue to play in the manner which they played today, hopefully we can build on this victory next week when we travel through to Falkirk"
