Maadmaxxer's 1969 VW Beetle - The Arrow

The Arrow on the start line of Santa Pod

A little about me:

I bought the VW Beetle above back in August 2003, since then it has had a fair amount of time and money spent on it to up to the point it is now.

Since I have owned it I have enjoyed driving the car, and only in 2006 did I have my first go at drag racing, only one event in that year, but it was enough! The following year I went to the same event to race the beetle down the track after having had a bigger engine hand built going from the stock 1493cc to a 1641cc which the current 1914cc still has much of inside. That summer (2007) I had a VW Golf Gti and raced that at Santa Pod and I knew that the drag racing bug had firmly sunk its teeth in by that point. I itched to get back out on to the track, but constant engine problems combined with a mini restoration to get the bugs bodywork ready for the track meant that I had to wait. The Beetle was then in its new paint after Easter 2008 and got renamed The Arrow after loosely following the paint scheme of The Red Arrows, and so at Bug Jam that year the Beetle finally took its first pass down the track posting a time of 18.50 seconds, I wasn't too happy with that, but it turns out the exhaust was loose on one of the headers, as I found out on the Monday after!

Having spent 2008 crewing for a team in the VWDRC I have learnt a lot about the sport and since that first drag race. 2010 came around and I entered the car into its debut race at Easter Thunderball. Having qualified first in VW Sportsman, I got through to the Semi-Finals and placed 3rd overall, which needless to say i was ecstatic about! The Big Bang was a couple of weeks after Easter and I was looking to do as well, however after a successful day of Run What You Brung on the Friday (a Personal Best of 16.25 @ 85mph) I was plagued with jumping out of gear on the start line, resulting in a departure in the first round.

Follow my story as I race my beetle, I am hoping that there will be updates on modifications to the car should they be necessary and little reports of what happened over the course of each race meet with pictures.

Alex.
