Rodian History

The Rodians are humanoids who are renowned as hunters. They possess multifaceted eyes; thin, tapering snouts, and green, scaly skin. Their long, thin fingers have suction cups at the ends, and a ridged spine crests at the tops of their skulls, evidence of their unique reptilian ancestry. Early in their history, the rock-climbing lizards who were the Rodians' defenseless ancestors developed tools and weapons in their quest for survival. They concentrated on honing their hunting skills for acquiring food, and because they focused on hunting game, they never developed agricultural skills. The act of hunting became an ingrained part of their culture. Rodians sought honors from society--especially the Grand Protector, the leader of their civilization--in recognition for their hunting skills. For this reason the Rodian people are, to this day, obsessed with the hunt and with the violence that results.Their original targets were predators native to Rodia, but after a time, all predators that the Rodians hunted became extinct. When this happened, the Rodians began to hunt one another. To engender large-scale slaughter, they found or manufactured excuses for wars and nearly fought themselves to extinction, laying waste to their environment. For this reason, they now have to import much of their food and many other resources form off-planet.Though extinction at one time seemed inevitable, a brilliant Grand Protector named Harido Kavila developed one of the Rodians' greatest cultural gifts to the galaxy. He invented Rodian theatre, and with it, helped stop his species from destroying itself.Since Rodians romanticize violence, drama was a good way to expiate the people's violent tendencies without requiring them to inflict harm upon one another. Their dramatic efforts developed gradually, and the early works were little more than staged fights. But Rodian dramatists quickly realized that the effect of drama was magnified if the fights were presented as elements of an even greater story. Soon, the complexity of Rodian stories grew, and they came to be as good as the choreographed violence.Rodian drama has come to be highly regarded throughout the galaxy, for although it is violent, it deals with motivations and situations that provoke strong emotional responses in audiences. In addition, these dramas show the realistic effects of violence, so that non-Rodians--and even Rodians themselves, if the drama is well written--are struck by the moral impact of each performance.Rodians are also renowned as brilliant weapons makers, and most Rodians work in the vast factories that manufacture their famous products, such as top-of-the-line blasters. This is their main export, and it fits well with their legendary talents as hunters--talents that they also offer for profit. Those who continue to hunt and who sell their talents often make a great deal of money and gain widespread fame on their homeworld and beyond. Bounty hunting has become an honored profession for the Rodians. Prizes are awarded annually for Best Shot, for deceased catches; Longest Trail, awarded for persistence; Most Notorious Capture; Quickest Catch; and Most Difficult Hunt.Because hunting is treated as a challenge and a contest, when Rodians leave home to participate in bounty hunting, they find it irrelevant that they may be participating in a law enforcement activity, rather than sport. Rodian bounty hunters often "pad" catches, allowing their quarry to commit a number of additional crimes, substantially raising the value of the final kill or capture, and bringing them more status back home. They often freelance or work under contract to crime lords and other disreputable figures.Despite their hunting prowess, Rodians are often viewed as cowards by members of other species. This is because they are generally unwilling to take risks or put themselves in danger to bring in quarry. For this reason, they often use the biggest and most destructive weaponry available to complete a commission. In addition, since they usually receive prizes when returning home with a kill, they may charge less to their employers if they are permitted to keep the remains of the victim. They charge exorbitant fees for bringing in live quarry because it often increases risk, and usually the Rodian will conveniently "forget" that part of a bounty agreement during the hunt. All Rodians exude a peculiar scent that most non-Rodians find repugnant (they stink).

The tropical home world of the Rodian race, Rodia was the second planet in the Tyrius System. Rodia was orbited by four natural moons. It was once a lush paradise teaming with life, but the hunters of the Rodians wiped out much of the planet's native life in search of food and dominance. Since then, it has become highly industrialized. Because of this industrialization, Rodia was subjugated by the Yuuzhan Vong, shortly after the alien invaders took Druckenwell and Falleen

This bipedal race with tapir-like face and multifaceted eyes is native to the planet Rodia, in the Tyrius system. The skin of a Rodian is green in color, and there is very little physical variation within the species. Thus, non-Rodians often cannot tell two Rodians apart. The Rodian race has ears that swivel in their sockets, allowing them to hear in several directions. There is a ridge of spikes which crests their skulls, and their long, flexible fingers are tipped with suction cups. They are a race of hunters by nature, and bounty hunting seems to hold a place of high esteem. As a race, they evolved are hunters, surviving their planet's tropical environment and establishing a series of war games which lasted for thousands of years. When an Old Republic scout team landed on the planet, the Rodians were there to meet them, armed to the teeth. They annihilated the scout team, and the Grand Protector declared that it was time to take their skills to the stars. Since then, they have not done as well as they had hoped. Many of the Rodians who make a living off-planet are working as bounty hunters for corrupt crime lords. Their weapon of choice is the thermal detonator, since a widespread explosion tends to kill more than a single blaster shot. Each bounty hunter is obliged to bring a valid record of his or her kill to the Guild on Rodia for logging in the record books. Others are making a living as Imperial lackeys. Rodians almost wiped themselves out as a race, during a time when the birthrate among females dropped below the level at which they were killing each other off. Harido Kavila, the Grand Protector at the time, devised a way for the Rodian people to funnel their violent tendencies through dramatic plays. The stories revolved primarily around violence, but had a well-defined plot and used the violence to magnify the emotional impact of the plays. The Rodian dramas became well-known throughout the galaxy, in part because they were strong dramas but also because they portrayed the full impact of violence on the perpetrator and his victim.

Famous Rodians

Avaro Sookcool
this Tetsus Rodian associate of Lando Calrissian ran the Flip of the Credit, a seedy casino in
Equator City, on Rodia. Avaro spoke Basic well enough, but he had a lisp which impeded his speech. He was also Greedo's uncle, but held no grudge against Lando and Leia Organa when they arrived on Rodia shortly before the Battle of Endor, claiming "business is business." Avaro was also a member of the Black Sun organization, reporting ostensibly to Clezo but with a direct line to Xizor himself

Boiny
this Rodian was a member of the Nebula Front team, led by Captain Cohl, which infiltrated the Trade Federation battleship Revenue shortly before the Battle of Naboo. In the wake of their defeat at Dorvalla and their near-capture near Asmeru, Cohl's crew was either killed or alienated. Only Boiny remained by Cohl's side, especially after Cohl agreed to help Havac pull together a team of assassins to kill Chancellor Valorum on Eriadu. However, when the Jedi caught wind of Cohl's activities, Havac was forced to take action to avoid discovery of his own plans. Havac's forces intercepted Cohl's people on Eriadu, and a firefight broke out. Boiny was shot and left for dead by Havac in the melee. Boiny managed to survive, just barely, and helped Cohl regain consciousness. They then lent assistance to the Jedi Knights who were on Eriadu, but Boiny was shot again and killed while protecting Qui-Gon Jinn's back

Chordak
this Rodian pirate is somewhat more cultured than his average relative, but still has a mean streak. Chordak did not use violence for the thrill of violence, which was a departure from the Rodian norm. He plied the spacelanes in his freighter, the Oo-ta Goo-Ta, travelling though the Minos Cluster and springing traps on unsuspecting transports. His usual plan of attack was to wait in a spaceport, searching for a suitable target. He then placed an explosive charge on the transport, which he could remotely detonate. He then followed the transport through hyperspace to its destination, where he would detonate the explosive. The crippled ship would then be easy prey. Chordak had hoped to catch the attention of the Imperial forces which occupied the Cluster during the Galactic Civil War, but never received an Imperial commission.

Dodo Bodonawieedo
this Rodian played the slitherhorn for the Max Rebo Band. Dodo was born on a shuttle that was en route to Tatooine, after his parents fled the wrath of Navik the Red. Dodo learned to respect his clan from his mother, and learned to love music from his father. He grew up in the streets of Mos Eisley with his best friend, Falk, but was forced out of his home when bounty hunters from Rodian killed his parents and burned the house. He and Falk then grew up as part of the Shawpee Gang, and they were fond of frocking jawas and stealing ronto steaks. Over the years, he grew into one of the minor information brokers in the spaceport city. After they left the Shawpees, Dodo and Falk joined Jabba the Hutt's ring of informants. Falk was eventually killed for spying, but Dodo remained with Jabba's group, and even joined the bands that played in the palace. After Jabba's death, Dodo sneaked into the palace and stole some valuable treasures before fleeing Tatooine forever.

Dree Vandap
this female Rodian was the Jedi padawan of Crian Maru, six months before the Battle of Ruusan. Dree and Crian were dispatched to Harpori to locate Kaox Krul, but arrived too late to save the Duros colony there. The Dark Jedi caught them in the Balowa System, disabling the Golden Song as well as his own starfighter. Landing on the only inhabitable world in the system, the two Jedi readied themselves for battle. Kaox Krul attacked them at every turn, until Crian Maru could confront him on her own terms. The two Jedi together were initially a match for the Sith warrior, but when Crian was thrown from the battle with a blast of Dark Side energy, Dree Vandap's limited training put her at a severe disadvantage. Kaox Krul wasted no time in killing Dree, before Crian could return to the fight

Gorak Khzam
this Rodian was once a member of the Sabriador Slavers, and later served as the First Officer aboard the FarStar, serving under Captain Kaiya Adrimetrum. He joined the crew of the FarStar after a call went out for volunteers, in the wake of the
New Republic's liberation of Kal'Shebbol. Khzam then claimed to have been plying the spacelanes of the Kathol Sector for a decade. Gorak was distinguished by his fear of contact with other beings, a phobia which prohibited him from engaging even in hand-to-hand combat. When Uta T'cha revealed Khzam's past, much of the crew threatened to kill him, having once been slaves themselves. Captain Adrimetum relieved Kham of his duties until she could sort it all out for herself. Meanwhile, Khzam began plotting a defection with Nizzal. When the FarStar landed on Uukaablis, Nizzal managed to smuggle Khzam aboard the Muvon while claiming she was along to collect supplies. Khzam suddenly reappeared after the crew had exited the freighter, and delayed their pursuit by throwing a thermal detonator at them. Nizzal then flew the ship into Kathol Sector and they disappeared. Khzam and the Sabriador reappeared during the Battle of Kathol, in Khzam's last effort to subvert the activities of the FarStar and eliminate the Qektoth Confederacy. To improve his chances, Khzam enlisted the help of the Skandrei Bandits. Unfortunately for the slavers, the Aing Tii had been tracking their movements, and six Sanhedrim ships arrived at Kathol and destroyed them. Khzam was lost in the battle

Greeata
this female Rodian served as one of Jabba the Hutt's dancers, shortly before the Hutt's death on Tatooine. She was ostracized as a child because she loved music and dancing more than hunting and killing. Her parents tried their best to change her into a "normal" Rodian child, but she resisted. Instead, she studied the music of various cultures and learned how to dance. After completing her schooling on Rodia, she managed to sneak aboard the Kuari Princess and catch the attention of Sy Snootles. Sy asked her to play kloo horn in a concert, and Greeata happily agreed. After a rowdy Rodian suggested that Greeata return to Rodia and marry him, Greeata and Sy left the Princess and eventually caught up with the Max Rebo Band. The band took in Sy, since they needed a singer, but would only take Greeata if she could dance. Along with Lyn Me and Rhystaal, Greeaata often performed to the music of the Max Rebo Band at Jabba's palace, shortly before the crimelord's death. She and Lyn Me used their survival skills - proving that Greeata had learned something in school on Rodia - to help the band survive the death of Jabba and the tumult which followed

Greedo
Greedo was a Tetsus Rodian, and grew up away from the violence of Rodia with his mother, Neela, and his brother, Pqweeduk. The Tetsus clan fled to an undisclosed jungle moon following the murder of Greedo's father, a noted bounty hunter, by the Chattza clan leader, Navik the Red. Note that the screenplay of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace has a young Rodian named Greedo accused young Anakin Skywalker of cheating during the Boonta Eve Classic on Tatooine. When Navik invaded the jungle moon, Greedo's family moved to Nar Shaddaa. There, Greedo became involved with Spurch Goa and Dyyz Nataz when he saved them from Gorm the Dissolver. Two Chattza Rodians, Thuku and Neesh, then hired
Goa to eliminate Greedo. Goa lured Greedo into the underworld of bounty hunters when Greedo approached him about information regarding the Alliance team living on Nar Shaddaa. Goa agreed to teach Greedo if Greedo paid him his portion of the credits for the information on the Alliance. Greedo agreed, and Goa strung him along until they all ended up on Tatooine, applying to Jabba the Hutt for one of Jabba's many bounties. Greedo, much to Goa's mixed chagrin and desire, signed up to collect the bounty on Han Solo. Greedo intercepted Han Solo in the Mos Eisley cantina, overconfident in his abilities to capture Solo and collect Jabba's reward. Han secretly drew his blaster under the table and shot Greedo in the midsection, killing him instantly. It is believed that Greedo often padded his bounties, waiting for the person to commit further crimes before actually apprehending him in order to drive the bounty up. Note that Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina makes no reference to the fact that Greedo had already been a bounty hunter for some time, while the Movie Trilogy Sourcebook makes no references to Greedo being a rookie when he was killed by Solo.

Jovan Drark
this young Rodian Jedi Knight accompanied Tenel Ka to Bilbringi, shortly after the Battle of Fondor, to assess the Yuuzhan Vong threat to the system and its shipyards. He was known among the Jedi an an inperturbable being who rarely took sides, and never let anything which was out of his control affect his judgement. He was killed aboard the Baanu Rass, when the Jedi attempted to infiltrate the wroldship and destroy the voxyn queen. He was severely bitten by modified flitnats, then took a Yuuzhan Vong strike to his chest. The resulting wound was too large for Tekli to repair, and Jovan died shortly afterward

Kelbis Nu
this Rodian was a student of the Jedi praxeum on Yavin Four, during the years leading up to the Yuuzhan Vong invasion of the galaxy. Kelbis was trapped by the Peace Brigade on Eriadu, during a mission in which he discovered that Nom Anor and the Yuuzhan Vong were planning to invade the Yag'Dhul system and use it as a staging area. The Brigaders toyed with him, a multitude of beings shooting blasters at him while he struggled valiantly to deflect the bolts with his lightsaber. The sudden appearance of Anakin Solo and Tahiri Veila saved his life long enough for him to give them the simple message of "Yag'Dhul" before he died of his injuries.

Onaconda Farr
this Rodian represented his homeworld of Rodia in the Old Republic Senate, some ten years after the Battle of Naboo. It was Senator Farr who first accused the upper echelons of the Galactic Senate of conspiring with the Separatists, an accusation which led to the arrest of Yir Tangee Senator Havriso Looruya. Senator Farr claimed to have evidence of more than 240 Senators and Judicial officials who were connected to the Separatist movement. In the wake of Senator Looruya's censure, Senator Farr was named to the membership of the Loyalist Committee in his stead, shortly after the death of his brother and sister-in-law in a house fire.

Revidjasa
one of Jabba the Hutt's favored lieutenants, this male Rodian was recognizable by the cybernetic replacement of his left arm. The arm was lost during Revidjasa's rise to power as a gangster in the Mid Rim. Jabba recruited him, but only after eliminating all of Revidjasa's own underlings. The Rodian agreed to join Jabba, but chafed under the Hutt's leadership. Revidjasa was one of the many of Jabba's underlings who wasted no time in carving out his own piece of the Hutt's empire in the wake of his death on Tatooine. Revidjasa quickly made alliances with the Zygerian and Thalassian slaving guilds, building the largest slaving operation in the Mid Rim during the early years of the
New Republic

Toorpa
this Rodian transport pilot and his partner, Weesh, were among the first to discover the existence of a space worrt. They were trying to locate a possible criminal in the asteroid belt near Antar, thinking that they could flush the being out and take over his base. However, they discovered the space worrt inadvertently, and Weesh was killed instantly. Toorpa managed to survive and bring his tale to the authorities, who launched an investigation into the space worrt's existence.

Weesh

this Rodian transport pilot and his partner, Toorpa, were among the first to discover the existence of a space worrt. They were trying to locate a possible criminal in the asteroid belt near Antar, thinking that they could flush the being out and take over his base. However, they discovered the space worrt inadvertently, unable to see its camouflaged form, and Weesh was killed instantly. Toorpa managed to survive and bring his tale to the authorities, who launched an investigation into the space worrt's existence.
