The slate story

It all started in the garden

Dylan was working in the garden when he came across a small fragment of green slate. Thinking this odd, he put the old piece in the diswasher to clean it off. Kate ws not too happy about dirty rocks in the diswasher, but Dylan argued that it was a very old dishwasher soon destined for the dump, and prevailed, Kate being of gentle character.

When the dishes emerged

When the dishes emerged, all clean and shiny, a perfect circular hole was revealed in the old piece of slate from the garden. Dylan and Kate now knew it had once been on the roof!

Old photos, a few more pieces from the crawl space, and a good deal of research determined the colors, size, shape, and even the source of the slate that adorned the roof 100 years earlier.

A rocky start

Estimates were requested and evaluated, and Sergio Liebman chosen to perform the work. That summer, the ill-fated Liebman was shot and stabbed to death in a parking lot in North Boulder while trying to sell his Porsche to two ruffians. While the murderers were quickly caught, the damage had already been done.

The work begins

Unable to face the prospect of a new set of estimates, Dylan and Kate began planning the installation themselves that winter. By spring the slate had arrived, and work on the tower roof began in earnest. This piece was placed on August 4, 200y after many long weekends hanging from a small crane and installing slate one peice at a time.
