Arnett-Fullen House

News from the Arnett-Fullen House

Boulder's Gingerbread House

Designed by George King and built in 1877 by Willamette Arnett for a cost of $4,000 the Arnett-Fullen House at 646 Pearl is Boulder's iconic historic house. It is surrounded by a beautiful Victorian garden and a stunning iron fence brought to Boulder by ox cart. Inside the house you will find a stunning entryway and staircase, parlor with an historic iron fireplace, Willamette's office, and even the first indoor bathroom in a private residence in Boulder!

Tower restoration project finished!

The tower restoration project at the Arnett-Fullen House has finished after hanging out on the tower for five months this summer on our home-built crane!

Some time in the early 1900s the slate on the tower was torn off and replaced with asphalt. This summer we started work on the restoration of the tower slate.

The work started with an examination of old photographs and scraps of the original slate found in the garden. From these we identified the size, layout, type, and colors of the slate that adorned the tower roof when the house was built in 1877. The unfading red used on the original roof is particularly rare, and can only be found in a valley between Vermont and New York. The 2500 pounds of replacement slate came from that same valley.

The roof has a life expectancy of 100 years. (We don't believe that the roofer can claim the same.) Well wishers have left messages on the back of individual slate tiles, possibly to be read again when the roof is redone a century from now.

Below you can see a comparison of the tower before we started and just after we finished. Click on the link after the photo to compare these photos to how the tower looked in the early 1900s.
