Result:   Arbroath United lost by 10 runs.  (Three Counties Cup – Semi-Final -  20 overs)

Arbroath United v. Forfarshire at Lochlands on Wed. 2nd July.

United had early success when Matthew Parker bowled Robert Cannon in the opening over of this 20/20 cup tie.   Graham Garden (23 from 33 balls) and Craig Wallace (23 from 23 balls) took the total to 49 in the ninth over before Garden was bowled by Ben McGill.   Wallace was joined by Tony Weed and they added a further 20 before Wallace was stumped by Mark Petrie from Chris Plomer’s bowling in the 13th over.   Plomer (3 for 8) took a further two wickets in his next over however an unbeaten 38 from 37 balls by Weed saw Forfarshire to 110 for 7.   In reply United lost McGill in the opening over but Parker (23 from 33 balls) and Fraser Burnett (33 from 33 balls) appeared to give United the upper hand as they reached 64 at the halfway stage at which point Burnett was bowled by Graham Black.  Black (2 for 16) had Parker caught by John Brown in his next over and although Peter Clarke was trapped lbw by Garden, United appeared to be still in control when they required 12 runs from the final 14 balls with six wickets remaining.   United however collapsed against the bowling of Cannon (2 for 17) and Garden (2 for 19) and combined with run outs saw them require two runs from the final ball with the last pair at the wicket, they could only manage one run and with the totals tied on 110 it was Forfarshire who progressed to the next round as they had lost fewer wickets.

United had Harmanjit Singh dismissed in the third over when he was caught by Greig Peal from Matthew Parker’s bowling.   Zulifar Shahid and Qasim Sheikh scored quickly reaching 52 in the 12th over before a mix up saw Shahid (29 from 33 balls, 4 fours) run out.  Fraser Burnett and Ben McGill both claimed a wicket to leave the visitors on 86 for 4 in the 24th over, however Sheikh (67 from 96 balls, 6 fours) and Zeeshar Bashir gained the upper hand taking the total to 144 in the 37th over when Shiekh was caught by Chris Johnston from the bowling of Craig Ramsay.   Bashir (45 from 72 balls) was eighth out with the total on 200 when he was bowled by Peter Clarke (2 for 29) while Borthwick and Mo Afzal took the Clydesdale closing total to 225.   United, lost McGill in the opening over, trapped lbw by Afzal.    Parker and Johnston took the total to 41 in the 13th over when the latter was lbw to Kamran Sajid.   The United middle order struggled and when Parker (50 from 94 balls) was dismissed by Bashir, United were 100 for 7 in the 34th over.   Calvin Burnett (30 from 35 balls) then had partnerships of 35 with Euan Rosie and 23 with Craig Anderson (unbeaten 13 from 22 balls) before become Ross Lyons (3 for 35) third victim caught by Afzal.   Sajid (3 for 17) also claimed a third victim when he closed the innings by bowling Ramsay in the 46th over with the total on 158, United losing by 67 runs.
