Lochlands Park, Keptie Road, Arbroath. __ DD11 3EW.

Arbroath United v. Penicuik at Kirkhill on Sat. 16th August.

Sent into bat United made a steady start reaching 21 from nine overs however they then lost both Ross McLean and Murray in successive Mitchell (2 for 26) overs.   A further 25 was added by Matthew Parker and Fraser Burnett before the former was caught by Mohammed Ramzan from Stuart Chalmers (3 for 37) bowling.    Runs were proving difficult to come however Burnett (41, from 54 balls, 6 fours) and Greig Peal (27 from 81 balls) took the total to 84 in the 32nd over before Burnett was caught by Mitchell from the bowling of Ian Kirkhope who claimed a further two wickets as United slipped to 127 for 8 in the 47th over.   Calvin Burnett (33 from 26 balls, 1 six, 3 fours) with Ewan Rosie scored quickly in the closing stages adding 34 before Burnett was caught by Willie Morton from Kirkhope’s (4 for 46) bowling, United closing on 163 for 9.   United had a promising start when Penicuik batted as both Chalmers and Freddie Coleman were dismissed by Calvin Burnett (2 for 20) to leave Penicuik on 28 for 2 after 12 overs.   Ramzan (59 from 110 balls) and Greg Ruthven (73 from 99 balls, 4 fours, 4 sixes) gradually took the game away from United with a partnership of 124 ended when Murray Clark caught Ramzan from Craig Ramsay’s bowling.    Ruthven was dismissed in the following over caught by Ramsay from Peter Clarke’s bowling.   This was United’s last success as Morton and Thomson took Penicuik to a six wicket victory with 4.4 overs remaining.

Result:  Arbroath United lost by 6 wickets.  (National Cricket League – First Division – 50 overs)

Arbroath United v. Forfarshire at Lochlands on Sat. 2nd August.

Forfarshire elected to bat, however Craig Anderson struck in the fifth over dismissing Craig Wallace, caught by Greg Peal with the total on 10.   Graeme Garden was joined by the professional Tom Cooper and although combined by the United’s bowlers they took the total to 49 in the 17th over before Ben McGill had Cooper (26 from 32 balls) caught by Craig Ramsay.   Forfarshire reached 61 in the 21st over before play was suspended for 25 minutes due to rain.   The total reached 80 before Garden (20 from 81 balls) was dismissed by Fraser Burnett and in the following over Craig Anderson caught Robert Cannon (21 from 28 balls) from Craig Ramsay’s bowling.   Aman Bailwal and Richie Gallagher (21 from 44 balls) added 23 before the introduction of Kevin Ritchie saw him take a return catch to dismiss Bailwal and four overs later had Gallagher caught by Chris Johnston to leave Forfarshire on 127 for 6 from 40 overs.   United lost Fraser Burnett with a dislocate finger with six overs remaining, Umair Mohammed (36 from 37 balls, 4 fours) and Peter Drummond (unbeaten 18) took advantage of the extra space, taking the total to 175 before Ritchie (4 for 38) claimed a further 2 wickets in the final over Forfarshire closing on 179 for 8.   The United response was delayed ten minutes due to rain, Mark Petrie and Greig Peal made a steady start reaching 27 in the 8TH over before Dougie Philip took a sharp return catch to dismiss Petrie.   Four overs later Graeme Quinn had Johnston caught by Wallace, runs became difficult to find and when Peal was fourth out, caught by Bailwal from the bowling of Quinn (2 for 21) United were 69 for 4 after 24 overs.   The bowlers continued on top and Mohammed bowled McGill and then caught Gavin Sinclair from Graeme Black’s bowling to leave United on 104 for 6 after 39 overs.   Kevin Ritchie (43 from 67 balls) and Ewan Rosie (19 from 22 balls) saw Unite gain batting points before Mohammed (3 for 26) dismissed both players and with Garden having Anderson stumped by Drummond United were dismissed in the 47th over for 147, losing by 32 runs.  The fixture was sponsored by Norman Fairweather Motors.

Result:  Arbroath United lost by 32 runs.  (National Cricket League – First Division – 50 overs)

Arbroath United v. Drumpellier at Langloan on Sat. 26th July.

United were sent into bat on a pitch which was to prove difficult for both teams.   Greig Peal and Mark Edwards made steady progress reaching 19 in the eighth over before Ian Warden dismissed both Edwards and Chris Johnston.  Warden (3 for 123) followed up by having Peal caught by Mike Anderson and when Alan Stewart bowled Fraser Burnett, United were 28 for 4 after 11 overs.   Ben McGill had partnerships of 15 with Calvin Burnett and 17 with Mark Petrie before he became the second victim of Drew Pryde (2 for 22).   Petrie appeared to be running out of support as Chris Keltie (2 for24) dismissed both Alan Pedgrift and Ewan Rosie and when Craig Anderson was run out by Peter Stuurman United were 76 for 9.   Petrie (44 from 65 balls, 3 fours, 1 six) was joined by Craig Ramsay and they added 36 for the final wicket before Petrie was caught by Dan Stevenson from Stuurman’s bowling, United being dismissed in the 41st over for 112.   United’s opening attack of McGill (1 wicket) and Calvin Burnett (2 wickets) had the home side in early difficulties as they reached 6 for 3 in the seventh over.   The professional, Stuurman (31 from 47 balls, 6 fours) and Graham McLaren (41 from 48 balls, 5 fours) gradually gained the upper hand with a partnership of 65.   Craig Ramsay (2 for 27) gave United hope as he had Stuurman caught by Calvin Burnett and McLaren caught by Peal to leave Drumpellier on 77 for 5 at the drinks interval.  United were only able to claim one further wicket when Anderson trapped Steve Allison lbw with the total on 99.  Keltie and Stevenson took Drumpellier to a four wicket victory with 10.5 overs remaining.

Result:  Arbroath United lost by 4 wickets.  (National Cricket League – First Division – 50 overs)

Arbroath United v. McCrea FS West at Lochlands on Sat. 19th July.

United sent West into bat and Calvin Burnett bowled Jason Harris in his opening over.   The professional, Grant Robinson (26 from 29 balls, 5 fours) joined Greg Watson and they took the total to 42 in the 10th over before the introduction of Ben McGill saw Robinson caught by Murray Clark, while Watson fell to Matthew Parker, caught by Mark Petrie in the following over.    Ian Young and Stuart Leggat took the total to 68 in the 23rd over when the latter was bowled by Fraser Burnett.   A further 29 was added by Young and Ross Brown before a flurry of wickets saw West slump to 103 for 8 as Fraser Burnett (3 for 30) claimed two wickets in his final over while Craig Ramsay and Peter Clarke each claimed a wicket.   United were unable to press home their advantage as Young (unbeaten 52 from 109 balls) gained support firstly from Aftab Talpur (21 from 38 balls) in a partnership of 32 ended when the latter was run out and then an unbroken partnership of 31 with Nikki Sood (18 from 24 balls) which allowed West to close on 166 for 9.   In reply Parker was caught by Robinson from the bowling of David McNulty in the fourth over.  Greig Peal and Chris Johnston (22 from 23 balls) took the total to 42 in the 12th over before Robinson and McNulty combined again to dismiss Johnston.   Peal was joined by Fraser Burnett (21 from 49 balls) and they reached 87, before Burnett was bowled by Talpur, leaving a target of 80 from the final 20 overs.   The total reached 106 before Murray Clark was bowled by Ian Cran and in the following over Peal (38 from 110 balls) was caught by Leggat from the bowling of Ricky Windows.   Another wicket fell cheaply leaving a target of 52 from 11 overs, Ben McGill (20 from 30 balls) and Calvin Burnett (17 from 18 balls) gave United hope with a partnership of 39 before Sood took a return catch to dismiss Burnett and McGill was trapped lbw by McNulty in the following over.   United edged even closer however Cran (2 for 36) had Petrie lbw and in the following over McNulty (4 for 28) bowled Ramsay to see United dismissed for 164 in the 48th over, losing by two runs.   The fixture was sponsored by George and friends.
