New Terrain Move

Jadhira Shazad

Residents of Apple Valley have been talking non-stop about the big move to the new combined terrain. Thankfully, the move is fairly simple, unlike the move after the big flood. Most residents are packed and ready for the short trip. Many of the residents are also excited about the prospect of shorter commute times bewteen areas of Apple County and the relief that many of the medical issues that recently plaqued citizens will be over.

Li Yoo was named the City Planner for Apple County which includes Apple Valley Metro, Apple Plains and Apple Valley. I had a few moments to speak with Li regarding the plans for the county.

JS: First, please give our readers a bit of detail regarding your new position.

LY: I am responsible for the county's physical and socioeconomic planning. I advise and assist the county council, in all matters relating to the development and improvement of the county, as well as in the preparation of strategic plans that have long-term implications for the county.

JS: What were some of the issues facing you with planning Apple County and how do you plan on meeting them?

LY: Combing the historical with the modern. It was very important to preserve lots that had historical value and at the same time trying to ensure and encourage affordable housing for all residents and maintaining economic diversity is one of the most important planning challenges. At the moment, there is not a lot of economic diversity, however with the changes predicted for the future, there will be a greater need for affordable housing. I plan on meeting this challenge through producing and renovating dwellings over two simyears to be more affordable. Meeting our affordable housing needs is going to be result of careful collaboration between numerous agencies, elected officials, community groups and citizens. Housing alone isn't enough to maintain our economic diversity and vibrancy. Mixed use development is essential, as is ensuring the health of the neighborhoods and commercial, cultural and manufacturing districts.

JS: Sounds like a lot. What are some improvements you would like to see?

LY:  Apple County need to focus more on sustainable and green design. One of the big issues confronting us in the future is energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. This is not an abstract concern for us. Think of what even just a one foot rise in sea-level could do to a coastal hoodlike Apple County. Focusing on improving our green building technology may be a way to help ensure that affordable housing remains a reality. Our county council has already made improvements by limiting the usage of cars and thus promoting a more pedestrian environment for the county.

I would also like to see a greater revival of historical buildings much like Lakeside Heights and Simmington Hills. Apple County has a vibrant history and even though many of our buildings have been destroyed over the years, I believe that replicas of these historical sites can be built and enjoyed by future generations. I would also like to further enhance Apple County's vibrancy by creating places with a lively mix of uses -- residential, commercial and cultural. We must recognize that good design and economic development are closely intertwined.

JS: Sounds like an exciting future. Thank you for your time.

Culinary Corner

Welcome to Culinary Corner! This simday's topic is all about nectar bars. In the standard MAXIS catalog, sims have access to the Sweetening Fruit Nectar Bar. Sims can choose from Grape, Peach or Berry nectar. It has been noted that sims with playful personalities will use the nectar bar more than other bars. Perhaps it is because nectars are so delicious. As with normal drinks, nectar increases fun and hunger but depletes bladder.

I have even found a replica of the old flat world nectar bar at ModtheSims2. This wonderful nectar bar allows you to sample nectars in much the same way our ancestors did. Happy Eating!

HFA Gala a Success

Jadhira Shazad

The first simannual Save the Arts Gala was a success. Sims from all over simnation attended the formal event which included charity auction of hand crafted artwork and pottery will take place as well. This year's theme was Masquarade for the Arts and participants were asked to don masks for the event. By the end of the evening, HFA had raised $53,000 for the organization and plans were made for a traveling exhibit, Fantasy Realm, for 2004-2006.

Apple Festival 2003

Jadhira Shazad

The summer Apple Festival  was held Remar 2003. The festival featured booths full of arts and crafts, musical performances, fishing contests and of course lectures about food. Special performances from Jimmie Page, the new girl group, Glitter and and SiMusic's Aerial Bionic were met with welcome reception.

"The Apple Festival 2004 will be just as great." Community Director, Carmela Herendez promised. "We're going to focus on food and gardening more since we will have the community garden. Not to say that there won't be musical guests, artists and lectures, that will be the same."

"However, with lectures spread bewteen all three arms of Apple County including Apple Valley Metro, and Apple Plains. We hope provide a variety of events that cater to various needs and interests of the residents."

Ms. Herendez did confirm that the Apple Festival 2004 will have a notable difference. "We plan on having an anniversary of the great flood during the Apple Festival 2004. We will take the time to look on the progress we have made as a hood since the flood and reflect on the lives lost or displaced as a result of the flood."

New Archives/Technology Director

Jadhira Shazad

The hood council has hired a new Archives/Technology Director. Jadhira Shazad was appointed to the position of Archives/Technology Director combined with the position of Editor of Apple Valley News. Prior director, Li Yoo Sweeny left the position to persue a new job with BAAM Architects. Congratulations to Jadhira.

Chat with Pahala Shore Producer

Jadhira Shazad

I recently sat down with Pahala Shore producer, Fiorenza Pentragnani. Actually, it was a virtual interview done over a private chat room. Many sims are familiar with the writers' strike occuring in Studio Town, but very few actually think that their television shows would be affected, until now.

Ms. Pentragnani tells me that the writer's strike has affected Pahala Shore. "Viewers have not known that our writers were striking as well since Pahala Shore films several episodes in advance, but the most recent episode-Episode 56, was the last of the episodes in reserve."

This means that there are no more new Pahala Shore episodes for the moment. "We support our writers and will be running Pahala Shore in syndication until a new deal is reached. Fans can look forward to enjoying the residents of Pahala from the very first episode."

Many fans want to know what will happen to the projects that are in production. "Any projects in production have halted as well. Pennelson Productions has recently released two cooking shows for the Yummy Channel, however The Adventures of a Mom-To-Be, the follow-up to the mini-series The Adventures of a Bride, has halted."

There is also news that the broadcast station, Geocities, will no longer be on aire after October. Ms. Pentragnani confirms this news.

"Yes, Geocities is no longer going to be on the airwaves. This means that we are busy looking for broadcast stations to host our older shows such as WhoDunIt?; SimBachelor; and the mini-series, The Gift. Thankfully they have given us enough time to find a new host, unlike the unfortunate incident with our publishing house burning down and all books being lost in the fire."

So, be aware of big changes for Pennelson Productions. Pahala Shore will run in syndication until the writer's strike is over, and our much beloved older shows will be changing channels.

Culinary Corner

Jolie Dawson

Welcome to Culinary Corner! This simday's topic is all about expanding your menu. Many families all over SimNation are content cooking meals from the MAXIS cookbook, but some want more. I stumbled along a great online conicopia of food at EpicuriSims some time ago and decided to share the food wealth. It's the perfect place for sims that love to cook but are bored with thier current selection of foods or even sims that desire to open their own themed restaurant but haven't found the perfect theme.

EpicuriSims has recipes for thousands of yummy meals. There's plenty of ethnic food, baked goods, foods for picky toddlers, foods for vegeterians and even breakdowns of the ingrediants of some favorite fast food resturaunts. However, it is more than just a collection of recipes for the novice cook, resturaunt owners visit here to order uniforms and equiptment for thier diners and if you're in need of party supplies or buffets for a special event, this is a great place as well. Happy Eating!

Herendez Foundation for the Arts

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

This past simyear, Carmela Herendez announced the formation of The Herendez Foundation for the Arts. The Herendez Foundation for the Arts will increase awareness of and appreciation for the quality of arts produced and presented in Apple Valley by providing programs and services to promote and assist Apple Valley Artists.

The Herendez Foundation for the Arts has two arms.

The Arts in Education arm supports artist education in the elementary and secondary levels. This includes donations of supplies, equiptment and funding to expose students to local art and culture through field trips, lectures and hiring artists/teachers as well as scholarships for students showing high artist merit.

The Partner in Art arm supplies fellowships for artists to move to Apple Valley to persue thier artist endeavours. This arm also provides funding to establish a community art collection, hire artists for various events, lectures and teaching positions, and host booths during the annual summer Apple Festival.

HAC (Herendez Artist Community)

Highly qualified adult sim writers, visual artists, composers and performance artists are invited to apply via email to HAC. Residences vary in length from 1-3 simyears, afterwards the artists may immigrate to Apple Valley or return to thier home hood. During this time, a furnished space is provided for in the enviromental sensative artist community. Artists are given a stipend of §500 for thier bills, supplies and food costs during this time. A community garden is provided to supplement food costs for the artists and each residence is responsible for thier own plot, while the harvests are shared amoung the group. Up to eight artists can be accomadated at a time.

Carmela shared that already as a result of the HFA, Apple Valley Academy was able to hire Nicole Humphrey as a full-time music teacher, and local artists Li Sweeny and Nicole Humphrey were hired to perform at the 2003 Apple Festival.

But, how does the foundation recieve funding? Carmela answered that private donations and fundraisers-such as the sale of hand crafted products, helps fund the program. Another opportunity to help the program is available in Resar 2003 when the HFA hosts the first simannual Save the Arts Gala (SAG). Sims from all over simnation are invited to attend the formal event. Tickets are §500 each and include admission to the event and access to the buffet and drinks. A charity auction will take place as well.

HFA Gala

Li Sweeny

The first simannual Save the Arts Gala will be held Resar 2003. Sims from all over simnation are invited to attend the formal event. Tickets are §500 each and include admission to the event and access to the buffet and drinks. A charity auction of hand crafted artwork and pottery will take place as well. This year's theme is Masquarade for the Arts and participants are asked to don masks for the event. Parsimonious and Barcelonista have a selection of beautiful masks to chose from. For tickets to the event send the number of tickets needed, names of guests and hood name to Carmela Herendez. Tickets must be puchased by Patar 2003 (June 15th).

Apple Festival 2002

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

The summer Apple Festival  was held Remar 2002. The festival featured booths full of arts and crafts, musical performances, fishing contests and of course lectures about food. Special performances from Geneva Rocket and SiMusic's Aerial Bionic were met with welcome reception. The Spirit of the Community Award was given to Carmela Herendez who plans on reinstating NewRIP.

"The Apple Festival 2003 will be even bigger." Community Director, Carmela Herendez promised. "We already have Aerial Bionic returning to the hood as a stop in thier summer tour and we're making arrangements to secure more musical acts, guest lectures and possibly an interactive hood building activity by creating a community garden."

"With the demolition of the Farmer's Market, lectures will now be spread bewteen all three arms of Apple County including Apple Valley Metro, and Apple Plains. We hope this will allow for more sims to attend a variety of events that cater to various needs and interests of the residents."

Culinary Corner

Jolie Dawson

Welcome to Culinary Corner! This simday's topic is all about cheap eats. The cheapest meal is of course the fresh fish that you catch yourself in a local pond. Simply grill it and add veggies for a yummy meal. With the rumored addition of a community garden, this meal can be had for the low price of free! Cereal and processed meat sandwiches are cheap as well, but be careful. They are not the healthiest foods for you to chow down on. Another cheap alternative is to have a vegeterian meal, not only are veggies healthy but are cheap as well thanks to the work of our local famers.

New Calendar

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

In the past, there has been much discussion about a new calendar for Apple Valley. Many residents felt that the #Season-#Simday wasn't reflective of the dynamic nature of the hood. To make sense of the dynamical nature of the hood (who would believe that during the rotation of Doe's home, John Doe has a crush on Jane Smith and they have a successful date, but during the rotation of the Smith home, Jane falls in love with John and they marry-all in the same simday!) the hood council voted to revive the ancient tradition of SimLonic Calendar.

The SimLonic Calendar has 8 months in which one or more household(s) will be featured each month (for example Havar 2000-Kent; Resar 2000-Grey & Shazad, etc) which is very similar to Lakeside Heights Calendar. The new calendar will go into effect immediately (simTuesday) with the year 2000. Listed below are the months, seasons and information about this ancient traditional simmish calendar.

 Season  Month  Info
 Spring  Hapar  Month of Happiness
 Spring  Lovar  Month of Love
 Summer Patar   Month of Patience
 Summer Remar  Month of Remembering
 Autumn Havar  Month of Harvesting
 Autumn Resar  Month of Resting
 Winter  Givar  Month of Giving
 Winter  Peacar  Month of Peace

The only changes residents and other hoods will note is that the newspaper will be printed in terms of simyears (our first issue after the new calendar will look at the events of 2000) and we're asking residents to start adding the month and year to thier blogs.

Economic Downturn Predicted

Li Sweeny

Financial experts have predicted an economic downturn, but residents in Apple Valley want to know how this will effect life in the hood. Experts predict that many residents will make cutbacks in their spending. Less spending means less profit for businesses and many owners will sell thier businesses to avoid bankruptcy or to access the capital in exchange for simoleans. Fewer local businesses means that quite a few sims will lose thier jobs forcing them to look outside the hood for work, however with the career capping system in place, those residents will have difficulty finding well paying work. With smaller salaries, fewer families will be able to afford to send thier teens to university and without those valuable degrees, the teens will have access to lower paying jobs and the cycle will continue.

The hood council is working to alleviate some of the strain of the predicted downturn with several mandates. The hood council has issued an order for all families to move into smaller gated communities. These communities allow residents to faciliate more intimate relationships with neighbors and frees neccessary land for other usages. Each home has a 7 year lease and allows for families to access the equity in thier homes to supply needed nest eggs to prepare for the economic downturn.

In the next article, we will visit some families to see how the economy has effected them.

New Homes for All

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

A controversial mandate issued from the hood council forcing area residents to pack up thier things and move to new homes. Three exclusive lots were opened for residents. Greymount Pointe (pictured above) features three larger homes with top quality building materials such as ceramic tile floors, granite counters and amenities such as an outdoor grilling area and playground for the residents' children. Apple's Landing features four modest homes (two one story homes and two 2-story homes) with gated backyards and a shared toddler play area. Meanwhile Daniels Row features three attached townhomes for those with more modest budgets. Smaller rooms can only fit smaller families, unless they chose to crowd sims into.

New Faces

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Apple Valley residents will notice a lot of new faces around the hood. With economic downturns in almost every part of Simnation, sims are spreading out looking for cheap housing and work. However, not all of SimNation has experienced financial turmoil and many sims are traveling to farther borders, including Apple Valley. These transient sims are not dangerous and should be greeted and welcomed as thier simoleans are great for our economy.

Culinary Corner

Jolie Dawson

Welcome to Culinary Corner! This simday's topic is all about natural remedies. As the nights get colder, make a pot of Comfort Soup. It warms the chilly bones and is even rumored to keep sickness at bay. Need something a little more refreshing, try fresh squeezed orange juice. Add 6 fresh oranges to any juicer and enjoy! Happy Eating!

Election Results

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Residents turned out in record numbers to vote for the new hood council as this election was one of the rare times in which an entire hood council would be replaced with fresh blood. Votes have been tallied and the results are in! Let's welcome the new hood council!

Hood Council President: Fiona Kent

Financial Director: Rebecca Wilsonoff

Community Director: Carmela Herendez

The formal Inauguration Ceremony was held this afternoon with the hood council serving as the guests of honor. The new council members gave thier inaugural addresses to the residents and there was plenty of food and drink for all.

Christmas Preperations

Li Sweeny

Christmas Eve is upon us and many families are rushing out to stock thier pantries with fresh produce for large Christmas feasts while others lined up in the local shops for last minute gifts. With two simdays left before the holiday, I managed to speak with several residents out and about running errands.

"It seems like Christmas snuck up on me! I just put a tree up a few moments ago and a few lights outside. Now I'm trying to find a golden trout, but they appear to be sold out, so I guess we'll have to have a traditional turkey. O! I have to hurry since I need to pick up some gifts for our toddler. Goodbye!" resident Jolie Dawson rushing through the line at Farmer's Market.

"The family has decided to travel to the mountains to our new cabin and celebrate Christmas. That means new clothing for the girls and wrapping presents now so we don't miss our flight out in the morning." Sandy Warwick said while reaching over to grab a cute purse at Posh.

"We're simply trying to survive! We move into our new home on Christmas Eve and needless to say our holiday decor will be a bit lacking, which is sad since it's the twins first Christmas. Thank goodness we agreed to buy presents off the internet." resident Jadhira Shazad said while ordering a fresh cake from CupaJava.

"My wife had the brillant idea of throwing a Christmas party, so in addition to getting decorations for the big day and last minute presents, I am out buying little gifts for the guests. Tell me again, Li, why we're throwing this party?" resident Tobi Sweeny interjected while browsing through the gift selection at the tourism department.

Resident of the Year Named

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Apple Valley voted on it's first Resident of the Year. Many residents sent in write-in votes and after all the votes were tallies, but congratulations to Ginger Grey! She will recieve a $800 check and a bouquet of flowers for her accomplishment.

Apple Valley Metro Revealed!

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Apple Valley Metro has officially opened its doors! The hood purchased a nearby tiny island (a twenty minute ferry ride) and established Apple Valley Metro. There are urban properties to accommadate housing for multiple familes in the form of apartment complexes, townhomes and condos. Good news to recent PAG graduates! They have a guarenteed percentage of the dwellings, so that they would have a place to return to after graduation. Also, they can expect subsidized rent. If you are not interested in moving to Apple Valley Metro, there is still plenty to do with movie theatres, a public beach and boardwalk, parks, shops and resturaunts opening everysimday!

Culinary Corner

Jolie Dawson

Welcome to Culinary Corner! This simday's topic is all about holiday cooking. Many sims turn to the traditional turkey for the holidays, however there are many options including grilled fish, baked pork and filet mignon. A variety of sides including garlic scallop potatoes, honeyed carrots and vinager rice. To finish the meal, sweets such as the traditional cheesecake get a twist with pineapple toppings, spiced nuts or even edible flowers. So this holiday season, look beyond the bird for your next feast! Happy Eating!

Election Votes

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

This past simday, residents turned out in record numbers to vote for the new hood council. This election was one of the rare times in which an entire hood council would be replaced with fresh blood. Candidates made sure not to do any last minute influencing at the polls and instead quietly voted and exited. Votes will be tallied by an independant 3rd party and the results of the new hood council will be officially announced on simSunday. The formal Inauguration Ceremony will be held that afternoon with the hood council serving as the guests of honor. The new council members will give thier inaugural addresses to the residents and there will be plenty of food and drink for all.

Food Expo 2008: August

Grex Grey

The Food Expo is over for 2008. The events were a great treat for the hood. Residents flocked out to the Cooking Competition, but Sazo Warwick took home the prize with his chesse platter. Later residents visited with Jolie Dawson as she signed copies of her cookbook and answered questions about baking and other kitchen need-to-knows. Congratulations to Tobi Sweeny who won the raffle for the §100 gift certificate to The Peacock and to Nicole Humphrey who won the §2500 dining room makeover.  The Food Expo 2008 was a success, with the church raising enough money for its remodeling plan and the school raising money for much needed equiptment. Thank you to all the residents that made this year's Food Expo a success.

Hood Council President Dies

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Apple Valley Hood Council President Ayanna Kent died in her home on this evening. Ms. Kent was known for her work with the Apple Valley council as well as serving as leader of the SUN Core Group. Her wisdom and advice will be greatly missed. Daughter, Fiona Kent, will step up as the Hood Council President and will be officially recognized as the new president once elections are over. A private wake has been planned and the public will be free to pay their respects at the public memorial service on simSunday.

School Construction

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Apple Valley students will step into a new school building on simMonday following thier Fall/Winter Break. A new modern school building facing the Central Park and the community center will be the new home for education on the island. Yours truly is designed the building to facilitate learning and thanks to donations of equiptment and fundraisers, the school will feature only the best. The school is split into three areas or hubs: elementary hub, junior high hub and the high school hub. There is an indoor lunch room, playground, science lab and new library, not to mention the gym and music room. The new hood council president and community director will dedicate the new building on simMonday and students will get right to work excelling beyond our expectations.

Explorers

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Apple Valley children now have a new club that they can join, the Explorers. Targeting nature loving and active children, the Explorers strives to develop character, citizenship, and personal fitness qualities among youth. During this Fall/Winter break, the Explorers will participate in a camping trip and learn how to sleep under the stars as well as fishing for bass and catfish.

Culinary Corner

Jolie Dawson

Welcome to Culinary Corner! This simday's topic is all about healthy eating. Many sims that love food also love to eat and taste and sample new things, but what about when all that eating catches up to you? A few extra pounds on the midline? Well, instead of going on a crash diet, try a few simdays of healthy eating. Experience the variety of chef salad and grilled fish, not to mention a dessert of fruity geletin or even nectar juice. Trading out these items for less healthy items from your meals, such as cheesecake, greasy porkchops or thick mac & cheese, will result in a thinning mid-section, especially if eaten in moderation. Happy Eating!

Food Expo 2008: July

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

The Food Expo is still going strong! The events for June were a great treat for the hood. Residents flocked out to the Fishing Competition, but Julio Wilsonoff took home the prize. All the fish caught was donated to Apple Valley's pastor who will use most of the bounty in a charity fish fry! Plates of fresh fried fish will be sold for §25 with the money going towards the renovation project for the church. Congratulations to Johan Shazad who won the raffle for the §100 gift certificate to Farmer's Market. This month with July: Food in the Kitchen, be sure to attend the lecture by our own cookbook author, Jolie Dawson, and buy signed copies of her cookbook at CupaJava. There is still time to register for the cooking competition. §500 and a great award will go home to the winners!

School Donation

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Apple Valley students were surprised when they arrived to school following the Blessed Harvest holiday. Upstairs there was a brand new piano, courtesy of Fiona Kent. Mrs. Kent loves music, especially classical music and felt it was a shame that the students didn't have a variety of musical instruments at the school. So she donated a brand new piano. Already students are fighting to get their hands on the new piece.

"I can't wait!" Susie MacAstral said. "I've decided to focus on creativity for my specialised studies and I want to try the piano, especially since there are great piano players in my family tree!"

Educational Director, Johan Shazad feels that the new instrument is a great addition to the school. "Hopefully more families will follow suit and donate equiptment or leave aside a bit of money for the school in thier wills."

New Medical Director Named

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

The Veronika Kent Medical Centre will soon have a new sim at the head of the ship. Julio Wilsonoff was named the new Medical Centre Director. Julio will take over duties full time once the current Medical Centre Director, Jan Dawson, permenantly retires upon her death. Until then, the young man will be training under the intelligent head and learning all the skills needed to become a successful director.

"I'm very excited about this opportunity. I've been working as a nurse and pharmacist for most of my time in the Medical Centre and to be chosen to replace the director, wow! I'm in awe!"

Congratulations again to the new director..

Your Room: Warwick

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Think you have a great room? Want to show it off? So did Sazo and Sandy Warwick. They were inspired to redecorate thier backyard in order to spend time outdoors with thier aging mother (in-law) before her death and before the coming of winter. To create the outdoor room of their dreams the couple focused on making sure the view was extraordinary.

"We wanted something comfortable and light to go with the outside of the house, but still durable to hold up to the elements."

The backyard started with a small area paved with stone tiles. Then a large canopy was added to provide shade and protection from light rains. A soft rug, chaise lounges from blakeboy of MTS2 with with blue, brown and white accent pillows, dark coffee tables and lamps finished the outdoor living space. The biggest change was the addition of several types of plants to add color and freshness to the outdoor space. Blackberries mixed with daisies and small shurbs attract lots of butterflies and hummingbirds, much to the delight of the couple's youngest daughter.

"Thankfully mom had a chance to spend time out here with her grandchildren before she passed."

Fertile Family

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

The Dawson family has had more than thier fair share of babies. Jan and Ellsworth Dawson have five children (three in other hoods, two here) and within the last few simdays, they have welcomed six grandchildren to the family, much more than most grandparents can say. Thier first grandchildren were twins from Jodi of Riverdale, followed by a grand-daughter from Janet of Roswell. To top things off, thier two children in Apple Valley delivered thier children on the same simday-twins from son Johan and a grand-daughter from Jolie. What are the busy grandparents going to be doing now?

"Not babysitting-that's for sure!" Ellsworth said scrambling for his magazine "Sims * Space", "we've got too many discoveries to uncover!"

Homemakers Host a Shower

and

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

With so many pregnancies, the Homemaker Society decided to host a breakfast baby shower for three women-all due the same simday-at the home of the Homemaker's Society President, Carmela Herendez . Well, the shower turned into a baby party with the women bringing thier newborns along for the fun. Johan and Jadhira Shazad arrived first with thier twins: Myra and Naraj, followed by Jolie Dawson and her daughter Grace Elise. Finally Homemaker member, Ginger Grey and her mother Cassandra arrived with twins: Bryant and Annie. The women enjoyed breakfast, recieved parenting tips from Homemaker Society President, Carmela Herendez and enjoyed a gift exchange including expensive activity tables from Carmela Herendez. The five infants were fairly well behaved-as most babies are at that stage, only awaking for thier morning bottle. The society plans on hosting another shower for another pregnant woman, however wondering minds want to know if Homemaker Society President, Carmela, has ulterior motives with the generous party, especially since she is running for the hood council.

Tatiana Speaks

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

I spoke with Tatiana Garris Vanderburg of Pahala Shore during one of her visits to monitor her investment, The Peacock. The young actress hasn't been seen much since she and her husband, fellow Pahala Shore actor, Chad Vanderburg, decided to move to Bottom Beach where the popular soap is filmed. Thankfully she had a few moments and entertained some questions.

LS: How's married life?

TGV: Just fine, we are still decorating our beachfront home and enjoying our new kitten, Cotton. It's been very enjoyable.

LS: What's going on in your life now?

TGV: Work! Pahala Shore changed it's airing schedule, so we don't have a haitus anymore, but frequent breaks. That's a little tough with filming and read throughs. I'm working on my own cooking show which piloted in Apple Valley, so now we're reformating and making some changes to send it to a national audience. Also modeling with A.Pentragnani and checking on my investment, The Peacock, takes a lot of my time not to mention Chad and I are discussing children.

LS: Children!?!? Does that mean we can expect a little one from you two?

TGV: Perhaps, we'll see.

LS: When?

TGV: (laughs) I'm sorry, I have to go. We have to make it back to Bottom Beach before the last ferry leaves. It was nice talking with you.

LS: Wait! Tell me more about the babies!

Security Details

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Apple Valley residents can expect some changes regarding thier security systems. As of simFriday, all existing security systems will be obsolete and no longer supported. Security Director, Tobi Sweeny will have updated fire and security monitoring services for sale in the security office and residents can expect to pay §250 each simweek for fire monitoring services and an additional §250 a simweek for security monitoring services, not including the price of the new system. The funds from the monitoring will be used in the Security Fund which supplies the salary for the Security Director as well as security and safety details around the hood.

Many residents were upset with the changes, demanding to know why all of a sudden they had to pay for monitoring services.

"You can't fight fires for free! You have to pay some fee in order for the house to be monitored and for fast response time to the scene of an emergency." Tobi Sweeny said

Other residents wanted to know where the money was going, "What safety details around the hood? We never had that before!"

Sweeny responded by saying, "The funds will be used for such measures like streetlamps outside each home and monitoring the surrounding seas for suspicious activity."

Food Expo 2008: June

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Apple Valley's Food Expo: Food in the Garden has started with a bang! With winter fast approaching, residents huddled outside The Farmer's Market to hear hood council president Ayanna Kent give the welcoming address to the Food Expo. After listening to the history of the event, residents were excited when the activities could finally begin and what actitivities. Free hot cocoa warmed browsing shoppers as they made thier way through fresh produce and hand crafted items like pot holders and fresh flowers.

Wisely, Grex Grey moved the podium indoors for his lecture on planning an efficent garden which was well attended dispite the fact that none of the residents had a produce garden and wouldn't be putting a garden out for fear of an early frost, but perhaps they were plannin for the spring. The lecture did include some tips on building a greenhouse and pest control methods as well as entertaining questions from the audience.

Your Room: Sweeny

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Think you have a great room? Want to show it off? So did Tobi and Li Sweeny. They were inspired to redecorate thier living room following a valuable find during thier honeymoon. To create the room of their dreams the couple thought about thier favorite colors (red for her, green for him) and what was important in the space (family memories for him, heritage for her) before tackling the large room.

"We wanted something urban, yet comfy and warm that allowed room for displaying memories."

The room was carved into several zones using half and full walls. The foyer leaves plenty of room for putting on shoes in the morning and features a brick and glass display wall with shelves for family photos, souveniors and room for the mail and newspapers. New grey carpet and warm cream walls allow the brick accent walls to pop and allows the red, white and black colors to harmonize nicely.

To create a small living area, the couple added a red sofa, chaise lounge and armchair from blakeboy of MTS2 with with black and white accent pillows, dark wooden columns with floasting entables and a black tibetian coffee table from Around the Sims 2. Thick cream curtains frame a new window refurbished from an old loft that lets in plenty of light and a very nice view of the lighthouse.

A reading nook completes the makeover with a single armchair, lamp, painting and of course, plenty of books on the overflowing bookcase.

Family paintings and decor items soften the new modern urban area by bringing in lots of warmth.

President's Daughter Weds

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Hood Council President, Ayanna Kent, celebrated the wedding of her daughter Fiona Kent to Jesse Carr of Eden this simday.

The open wedding ceremony was held at Central Park and many residents made it to the event. In addition to locals, several sims from international hoods attended the nuptials, including Fiona's twin brother, Fredic from Palatial Heights, and many spokes sims from area hoods. The bride wore a Tatiana Asymetrical gown and Alvaro Mantilla Veil from A. Pentragnani. The gown has also been sighted on Suburb Sim and in a notable Simmerville wedding. The groom wore a MAXIS tuxedo. The couple exchanged vows under the eternity fountain.

A private reception was held at the Kent residence where press and guests mingled over a fall inspired menu of butternut squash soup, pumpkin and gourd pork chops and plenty of carrot cake. During the fesitivities guests also celebrated the teen birthday of the couple's son, Bill Carr. The couple will depart tomorrowsimday for a private honeymoon to an undisclosed location.

Blessed Harvest Day Moved

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Blessed Harvest Day was scheduled for simWednesday, but in an unprecedented move, the hood council annouced that the holiday was going to be celebrated on simThursday. Apparently documents were found that indicated the holiday was celebrated on the 1st simThursday of every fall.

Blessed Harvest Day is the day that Apple Valley's residents take a moment to count thier blessings, celebrate the harvest and enjoy thier families. Many residents celebrate with a large dinner and attend the local church service. School is canceled and most employees have the day off-but check with your boss to make sure. The hood council is still hosting the Blessed Harvest Day Festival from noon-6:00pm at the Farmer's Market. There will be a lecture about the origins of the holiday, a food competition-so bring your best Blessed Harvest dish (no turkey please) and plenty of sales on turkey, seasonal decor and fresh produce.

The Memorial Church & Gardens will host a special Blessed Harvest service featuring a special musical rendition from locals Faith Humphrey and Susie MacAstral.

I asked local residents, what they thought about the change in the holiday. Most submitted comments with promises of privacy:

"Houwey! They just made that change up. Every resident know that the hood council president didn't want anything interferring with her daughter's wedding! So what do they do! Move the holiday! Hogwash!"

"Insane! You are prepared for a simday off and then news comes that you must report for work! Silly council! I can't wait until we vote! This must stop!"

Food Expo 2008

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

It's that time again! The Sim Nation Food Association's Food Expo 2008 is fast approaching. While there still isn't word on which hood will be the main host, though I can reveal that Apple Valley applied for the honor, many hoods are getting thier local events geared up. Apple Valley is no exception! Three months of action packed events have been planned following the usual format of Food in the Garden (June); Food in the Kitchen (July) and Food on the Table (August).

The first Food Expo 2003 was hosted by Simmerville in during the old dimension and since then more and more SUN hoods have co-hosted the event, making it something the entire simnation looks forward to each summer! A lot of work goes into co-hosting the event on a local level, not to mention a simnational level. I talked with the Food Expo Planning Committe Head, Grex Grey for more information about this year's events.

LS: Grex, how many members are on the Food Expo Planning Committee? What does the committee do?

GG: This year we have Community Director, Rayne Wilsonoff; Jolie Dawson; Ginger Grey; and Julio Wilsonoff helping to plan this year's events. The committee looks at the annual topics (Garden/Kitchen/Table) and decides how the resources in the hood can meet those topics and what the hood residents would desire. Last year, for example, there were more celebrities tied to Apple Valley, so the events were a bit more...glamourous. This year, the event will be smaller, since the number of residents is smaller, but there will still be lectures about food and Simmish traditions, contests and lots of opportunities to meet with other sims that love food!

LS: What can we expect this year?

GG: Mostly the same as last year. There will be at least one lecture for each topic, contests, raffles and events such as a neighborhood potluck or the charity fish fry. I'm mostly excited about the raffle for the dining room makeover. Tickets will be on sale at the Farmer's Market and there's no limit to the number of tickets you can buy, so the more you buy the more chances you have to win!

LS: How do you expect the residents to respond to the Food Expo? Not every sim loves getting thier fingers dirty in the vegetable garden or cooking.

GG: Ah, that's the misconception about the Food Expo! It's not just for sims that love to grow thier own produce, or sims that love cooking in the kitchen! It's for sims that love to eat-and that's every sim! Sims that love to be active and stay and shape can learn about different juices and smoothies to help them; artistic sims or those with a love for money will enjoy the lecture on setting a table to evoke the best feelings from your guests; shy sims or those that love to read will enjoy discussing the newest cookbook from our local resident, Jolie Dawson; music lovers will find out how to pair thier music with their meal and there are even more ways that all sims will enjoy the expo!

LS: I stand corrected. What about the non-adult residents? Will there be anything for kids and teens during the Food Expo?

GG: Of course! This year kids will participate in a lemonade sale with the profits going towards the school for renovations and new equiptment. Children and teens can participate in the fishing contest while teens are invited to submit items to the cooking competition.

LS: So how can residents find out more information?

GG: The Food Expo section of the website of course!

LS: Thank you.

Local Signs Deal

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Local resident, Jolie Dawson has signed a three book deal with Pennelson Publishing! Jolie isn't a stranger to writing as she has contributed several articles to cusine magazines for simdays, but this is her first publishing deal. Jolie will be writing a series of cookbooks and if they are popular, we might see Jolie on our TV screens alongside Claudia Cavanaugh and Tatiana Garris Vanderburg on the Yummy Channel. For now, you can pick up her first cookbook "Baking for Simmies" this June from CupaJava or online at Pennelson Publishing and get her to sign it during the Food Expo.

New Deal Signed

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Apple Valley's Hood Council signed the new Freetime deal this past simday. Residents have been delighted with the new expansions, but there are questions that remain. I sat down with Community Director, Rayne Wilsonoff, to get the story.

LYS: Some residents want to know if there will be additional lots built to satisfy the growing needs of the population. For example, many residents want a place to be active and play sports, a musuem or a place to watch performances.

RW: The hood council is exploring all options, especially since transport to earby Pringit City has been suspended due to the long and dangerous commute. Land use is limited, so we will look at modifying existing lots first. If this is not feasible, then yes, a new lot will be developed.

LYS: How will the new deal affect life in Apple Valley?

RW: Currently, there are not many changes. The  new deal allowed the hood to import more objects to satisfy the needs of the residents in thier leisure time. With the new objects, many residents will finally make the leap to establish more clubs and we anticipate a growth in club applications.

LYS: Yes, that's true. Some friends and I were discussing starting a book club before the new deal was signed and now with the new deal, perhaps we'll go ahead and start the club.

RW: Many residents will find that the hood already has opportunities to satisfy thier needs, they simply need to look a bit harder. Also, several community business owners have applied for licenses to alter thier businesses to assess the new needs of the community. I think the best part of the new deal are the new objects we were able to purchase for the school, so students can spend thier time learning even more skills.

LYS: Thank you for your time.

Blessed Harvest Day

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Blessed Harvest Day is the next simday and many residents are wondering what activities the hood has planned for this holiday. First, some details, contrary to rumors, school is not canceled-all students must attend class. The same can be said for most employees-but check with your boss to make sure.

Blessed Harvest Day is the day that Apple Valley's residents take a moment to count thier blessings, celebrate the harvest and enjoy thier families. Many residents celebrate with a large dinner and attend the local church service.

The hood council is hosting the Blessed Harvest Day Festival from noon-6:00pm at the Farmer's Market. There will be a lecture about the origins of the holiday, a food competition-so bring your best Blessed Harvest dish (no turkey please) and plenty of sales on turkey, seasonal decor and fresh produce.

The Memorial Church & Gardens will host a special Blessed Harvest service featuring a special musical rendition from some local children.

I asked local residents, what they had planned for the holiday.

Jolie Dawson: "I am on maternity leave so I will spend the morning cooking and baking for the meal. We're going to have turkey, mac & cheese, salad and of course cake!"

Sazo Warwick: "I have to run the shop in the morning, but I plan on picking up a turkey from The Farmer's Market for the dinner. After dinner, I guess we'll play some games or watch the big game on TV."

Carmela Herendez: "I am going to visit the festival and enter the food competition. Then, I will pick up a turkey and we'll go to the church service. After the service we'll eat dinner and head to bed...or maybe take a swim if the weather is still nice."

Your Room

Li (Yoo) Sweeny

Think you have a great room? Want to show it off? So did Jolie Dawson. She was inspired to redecorate her living room/dining room/kitchen and I was there to see the finished product. Jolie shared that she began by looking at a website for inspiration before creating the room of her dreams. The website inspired her in terms of a color scheme and feelings that she wanted the room to evoke.

"I wanted light, airy and since I love flowers and the color purple, something to remind my of a garden in the spring."

To create a small reading nook, she then added celedon armchairs from blakeboy of MTS2 with taupe and lilac pillows, a white endtable and vase of flowers. New carpeting completed the look throughout the living room. The same celedon color extended to the other half of the living area with a sectional and chaise longe, more flowers, wallpaper from Lyran's Sims and new curtains evoke the english garden theme. The fireplace recieved a little updating with a new facade and shelves to hold treasured photos and momentos.

The kitchen also recieved new tile, a new shiny white fridge, and white wood furniture from the dining room table and chairs, to the desk, and to the counters. Accessories such as curtains, teapots, rugs, and paintings round out the look.

With her new living room/dining room/kitchen combo, Jolie says that she "finally feels like this is my home too, not that I'm living in my parents place."

President's Daughter to Wed

Li Yoo

Apple Valley's Hood Council President, Ayanna Kent, annouced her daughter, Fiona's engagement to Jesse Carr of Eden. The news is especially exciting since it's no secret that Ms. Kent has aspirations of becoming the next hood council president. Many residents are gossiping about the three simdays of events planned leading up to the nuptials on simWednesday including the bridal shower, hush hush bachelorette party and the big wedding.

It's anticipated that many spokesims from all over the simnation will be invited to the nuptials so that young Ms. Kent can hob nob and network with her future comrades. She has already been networking around the isle, chatting up residents and current hood council members. Testing the air for possible complaints and issues. One hood council member spoke on the condition of anominity, "I think Fiona would do a great job as council president, assuming she wins of course, but who would be her competition?"

Ms. Kent's fiance immigrated shortly before the storm with his young adopted son, Bill. The couple met thanks to thier mothers' interceding on the Simmerville boards. Many residents wonder if it's a true love match or simply a political manuevering to establish ties with another large hood. "I mean, come on. Thier mommies got online looking for spouses and then they start talking and then they're engaged. Anyone can see through that!"

Ms. Kent's cousin, Rebecca Wilsonoff, recently married herself said that "Fiona and Jesse are very much in love. It's a shame that residents can not see that. Fiona loves that man and his son and they love her back. So what if it was a fast courtship, look at you and Tobi." Point taken indeed Mrs. Wilsonff

Few details about the wedding are being released, but it is known that the wedding ceremony will be open for all residents, however the reception will be closed due to security. Also, it is unknown if Fiona's twin brother, Fredic, will make the trip from Palatial Heights for the wedding and if he will bring his girlfriend, model Gin Hart-Young, or her husband.

EDIT: With the breaking news of the death of Fidel Kent, there is no word on how the wedding preperations will be affected by this development.

Historical Project

Rayne Wilsonoff

The Historical Society annouced that they will be starting a huge project in terms of Apple Valley history. They will be creating a historical book looking at various aspects of the hood from it's TS1 days. Historical Society leader, Li Yoo, had more to say.

"Many residents may wonder why, as the new leader of the Historical Society and the newest resident to the hood, I decided to ask the members to persue the project. I felt that Apple Valley has a rich history and all of that history needed to be placed in a book for future generations and other hoods to read about. This project fits very nicely with Apple Valley's current "Return to Our Roots" campaign."

"The project will look at the following aspects, or chapters if you will: The World of Apple Valley and surrounding hoods in SimNation; Physical and Historical Features of the hood (from TS1 to present day and the changes in bewteen); Notable Sims and Customs; Social Organization (such as how our government is set up); Commerce, Trade, and Public Life and Daily Life of Residents."

"It's a large project and we plan on working on one chapter at a time, however the hood president, Ayanna Kent, has told me that there was push to do a simnational project of the sorts using data from all the SUN hoods. So if that project ever gets pushed through in the future, Apple Valley will be prepared."

Residents are free to assist with the project and can contact any of the Historical Society members for more information.

The Aftermath

Li Yoo

Apple Valley residents spent several simhours in a daze after the storm. Many mourned for lost friends and family members and thier homes and past. The hood council members had many meetings with government officials and eventually created a plan for the Apple Valley residents.

First, the council presented the recovery plan. Since the hood was declared a state of disrepair there were only two options: a costly rebuilding program or a relocation program. The hood council voted on the relocation program. The government and neighboring hoods offered lots of support and help for the residents to restablish thier home in another place and plans were made to move to the tiny uninhabited island of Fruitia and rename it Apple Valley. Citizens were asked if they wished to continue to to live in the Apple Valley community or move elsewhere. Several residents accepted the latter option, mostly celebrities who took the opportunity to move closer to work. Amoung those leaving was Hood Council Financial Director, Ka'Obi Sweeny.

After emmigrating residents were processed, the remaining residents gathered their data and few belongings and started the process of collecting insurance for the damages. The Hood Council focused on drafting a comprehensive plan (which can be found in council notes) outlining the next steps of the hood and finding a replacement Financial Director. Matthew Grey stepped up for the position and will hold the position until the next election in five simdays.

A brief helicopter survey revealed the reason why the island was uninhabited. Numerous rocks jutting out of the sea surrounded the island and there is evidence of a few shipwrecks off the southern coast. However a strange stone like structure on the south end of the island which the hood council voted to perserve seemed to indicate that there was once life on the island. The island was 60% smaller than the previous landmass and as a result land was scarce. The hood council began working with volunteer city planners and architects to design the new hood using most of the leftover budget and some aid from the government. They designed a community with a central park surrounded commercial zoning leading to the outskirts of residential zoning with many of the civic lots keeping thier original names. To safely navigate around the dangerous jutting rocks, a massive bridge was designed to protude out of the north end of the island, so ships could dock and drive cargo trucks into the island without incurring damage or death.

After residents collected thier insurance settlements, they then met with the hood council to discuss purchasing land and rebuilding. Residents were encouranged to draft plans of thier homes reflecting the unique yet diverse style of the new community. Many residents chose to build replicas of thier ancestoral homes for a sense of history while others decided to build homes reminiscent of a coastal community.

Many residents decided to rebuild thier businesses, revamp old businesses or start new businesses which was essential in providing income and jobs to the hood and a much needed economic stablity to the hood. Business owners applied (or reapplied) for a total of five business licenses and business loans. Afterwards that met with interior designers to create thier businesses while the exterior of the commerical lots are uniform to maintain a sense of unity along the main street. Meanwhile, other residents started applying for jobs and civic employees were also chosen. Many residents were initially upset about the long ferry ride to SimCity and lack of "professional" job opportunities, however, every working age adult that desired a job was soon matched with a position and the intergrated economy was born.

Meanwhile, construction had started on the island with residents being able to view the progress from thier shelter via web cams. Just because residents were in the shelter did not mean that time was held still. Residents celebrated birthdays, babies were born and relationships and engagements florished. The ongoing passage of life encouraged the community that life would still continue.

The Return

Li Yoo

Once construction was complete, residents moved into the hood family by family, starting with the families of the hood council, then civic employees and finally all remaining residents. The first simday in the new landmass was filled with much anxiety and excitement. The Hood Council President welcomed the entire hood back to soil.

After a brief welcoming ceremony, residents started going about thier day. Most residents spent time moving furniture into thier homes as all work and school were canceled. I spoke with four residents after the welcoming ceremony to find out what they had in store for thier first day back on the soil.

Johan Shazad: Of course I plan on preparing the school for our first school day, especially now since all dependants attend the school and not just teenagers. After that, my wife and I plan on taking a walk around the island to look at the native flora and gaze at the numerous rocks surrounding the isle.

Rebecca Wilsonoff: Julio and I are finally going to marry. We wanted to wait until we landed before tying the knot and now is the time, it's a few simdays later than we planned, but worth it. Then we're going to take a much needed vacation while my parents manage the toy shop.

Grex Mendenhall: Ginger wants to have a small wedding ceremony at the City Hall which we'll do after we plant crops for the winter harvest. I hope we can avoid the coming freeze. I also want to visit my new business lot and set-up shop. Make sure you visit the open air market we have.

Nicole Humphrey: I am glad to be back on soil again and plan on practicing for my new job at The Peacock. Also, Lyndon and I want to take the children to the park and make the rounds to the homes and invite residents to visit the church for simweekly services.

Major Flood Hits

Elle Kent

Residents woke up simThursday morning to rain, but what they didn't know is that by the time dusk fell, the entire hood of Apple Valley would be flooded and residents would be in shelters. Here's what happened.

03:00-Rainfall starts to fall at a large pace.

05:00-Rainfall increases along with heavy winds, by this time, small floods begin to form in the low laying areas of the hood.

07:00-Hood Council has an emergency meeting as they recieve notification from the National Weather System that the rain they are experiencing will continue and worsen into a large storm.

09:00-Waters rise as the rain increase. By this time businesses can not open thier doors due to the rising waters.

10:00-The Hood Council calls for evacuation. Residents begin to take small bags to the roofs of thier homes so that helicopters can pick them up. Nearby hoods and the national government send more helicopters and rescue crew to help with the efforts.

11:00-First death reported. Eldery couple trapped on the roof, were unwilling to grab onto the helicopter when it came to rescue them. Rescue worker tries to force them onto the ladder, however the couple struggle and falls to thier death. Thier teenage son died after jumping off the helicopter and trying to pull them to safety.

11:30-First missing sim reported. Family spotted in a small rowboat trying to leave thier home. The boat is swept away and helicopters and rescue crew lose sight of it.

12:00-Rescued residents are placed in shelters and census starts to find missing sims

13:00-More deaths reported. Family found trapped in the bathroom of thier home. Two adults and two children.

14:00-Heavy winds and rain continue to pummel Apple Valley. Mudslides quickly form and many homes are lost beyond repair and hope.

16:00-The western end of the hood gives way as the soil loosens due to rain. Houses tumble into the flood and the land literally caves in.

20:00-Nothing can be seen in Apple Valley, mud and water cover everything.

21:00-Missing family is found clinging to a tree.

23:00-National government declares Apple Valley a State of Disrepair after surveying the land and the damage. Apple Valley residents process the news and start grieving for thier home hood and making plans for thier next step.

Stay tuned here and we will keep you updated with the process of rebuilding in Apple Valley.

Website Revamp

Clark Grey

Many residents have already noted that the website is undergoing changes. The goal is to create a user-friendly design that visitors, residents and hood administators can easily navigate and find exactly what they're looking for. Many pages are gaining more graphics, others are losing text and some pages are being deleted.

"As always we're trying to make the website easy to use and exciting while allowing visitors to find the things they're looking for. We're analyzing the data and collecting suggestions as well on to how to make the site user-friendly," website coordinator, Clark Grey spoke.

Other ways the website is changing is the number of updates. Instead of thrice weekly updates the website will be updated twice a month while there will continue to be one blog updated daily.

"Updating less frequently allows residents more time to actually live thier life instead of working to update the website. There will always be at least one blog updated each day, however this will not be reflected on the homepage." Grey continued.

As the website changes, please make your concerns and suggestions known, until then-please pardon the construction.

Behind The Scenes

Clark Grey

Apple Valley has opened a new section of the website to other hood administrators across SimNation. This "behind the scenes" section reveals many of Apple Valley's tools and tutorials that we use to maintain the website and hood.

"Sharing information amoung other hood administrators allows every hood to operate at it's optimal peak. Why must each hood 'reinvent the llama wheel' when another hood has tested and found results for technologies and filing systems." Hood Council President, Ayanna Kent shared.

The tools available are a sampling of the family tree database, resident information database and some tutorials that Apple Valley has found extremely useful during thier maintainance activities. The section has these tools and much more available for download.

Art Exhibit

Rayne Wilsonoff

Apple Valley residents are invited to participate in an art competition. Residents are asked to submit paintings or photographs adhering to the theme, Uniquely Apple Valley, to Antonio Herendez at Herendez Art Gallery. The paintings and photographs will be displayed for several simdays before judges announce a winner. The winning masterpiece will be placed on permenant display in the welcome center and the winner will be able to chose an item from the art gallery as thier prize.

Calendar

Clark Grey

The Hood Council has announced a new calendar system. Hood Council Community Director, Rayne Wilsonoff announced the changes in a hood council note. Residents are already familar with the season #, simday # system currently in use, but after research and polls, the hood council has determined four holidays for the hood to celebrate. Each season the hood will celebrate a holiday according to traditions and current events.

Trends: All About Style

Sandy Warwick

Ask any sim in Apple Valley what are they wearing and once they realize that you're not looking for the typical answer of clothes, they will say 'All-About-Style'. That's right, All About Style has the best fashion for simmies and best of all for Apple Valley residents, it's an approved importer meaning, no import fees for you! Each week there are new items to shop from and they're all delicately and intrictly designed. You can even find nice vintage wear here as well, not to mention jewelry and other accessories.

However, if you're looking for the younger set of sims, the selection is few and far bewteen. There are some children's items in the vintage section, but otherwise expect only items for teenagers and older.

Botanical Garden Opens

Rayne Wilsonoff

This simday, residents will be able to visit a brand new location in the hood. The E'laine Botanical Gardens opened with little fanfare as garden club members and residents flocked to see what the fuss is all about. Located off of Royal Gala, the gardens is a wonderful display of the several native plants and flowers that our hood has.

The garden started as an objective for the Garden Association members. They desired to see more organized plant life in the hood and petitioned to have a botanical garden commisioned. The purpose of the garden is to educate sims about the various plants available, host outdoor performances and serve as a place for weddings.

The garden is divided into quadrants. The north quadrant holds the lush orient garden with a zen sand garden for raking, bridge over a small pond and the sights and sounds of the orient. The west quadrant holds the performance lawn with espresso area, restrooms and outdoor stage. Seating is on the lawn and this is a great spot for local bands to perform or even special hood events. The south quadrant is the rustic english cottage garden, full of fountains, wildflowers, beds of plump roses and little cupid sculptures, this is the perfect spot to get married. In fact, there is an arch covered with jasmine and tiny roses and surrounded by crumbling brick walls and lots of flowers. The east quadrant features the roman garden with it's planned minimal landscape, roman busts and fountains, this is a serene resting place and the perfect spot to meditate.

Summer Festival Announced

Clark Grey

Apple Valley will welcome a summer festival on the last day of summer, the Hood Council announced. Residents can expect many activities at many locations throughout the hood. At the Children's Sculptural Park there will be performers (jugglers, trained dogs and more), free lemonade and exciting raffles where a lucky child will win a $100 certificate to the Toy Shoppe and another child will win a $400 certificate to The Green Paw pet store. For the teens, there is an evening concert planned at The Foundry where several international acts such as The Fighters and Sergio will be appearing in concert. Tickets are $50 for regular admission and $200 for the special VIP package which includes private seating near the stage, backstage pass to mingle with the bands and autographed posters. Adults can visit the botanical gardens and enjoy lectures on the history of Apple Valley given by Historical Society President, Clark Grey, and pick up an advance copy of Apples to Apples, a look at the history of Apple Valley.

New Deal Opens Access

Clark Grey

Residents reported very little distrubances due to the new deal. There have been cases of sims becoming stuck in place, but the problems are able to be fixed fairly quickly. Due to the traffic lockups and travel times, the hood council has announced that access to Tiki Island, Kimikura and Schatazweitzier Mountain are open. These locations are closer to the hood and travel times are significantly reduced.

To celebrate, each destination is holding a raffle for a 3 day/2 night vacation. Residents can purchase tickets for the raffle for $100 each. The winners gets an all expense paid vacation for up to four sims to one location.  Residents can visit The Centre to purchase the tickets.

Car Scandal

Clark Grey

Residents quickly supported the environmental proposals from the hood council by getting rid of thier cars, but many residents are noting that Hood President, Ayanna Kent, hasn't given up her precious mustang. This brought about shouts of hipocrosy as residents expect the hood council to support thier own proposals.

"I need my car, I live several blocks from The Centre and must drive to the city each day for work," Ayanna defended.

"Smush! Lots of us walk to work and carpool, all for the environment! Why can't she do the same!?" one resident yelled.

Faces of Apple Valley

Clark Grey

The hood council announced a Faces of Apple Valley campaign in which Apple Valley residents ranging from the famous Tatiana Garris to the not so famous Ginger Grey will be featured in a series of ads. These ads will be sent to other hoods for publication in thier papers, on billboards, on postcards and on calendars.

Trends: Review Big Round Pizza Shop

Carmela Herendez

If you are looking for a casual place to grab a snack during your shopping trip or for a nice casual date, The Big Round Pizza Shop fits the bill. With it's brick inlay interior, comfy chairs and unassuming staff, it's a great place to simply enjoy good pizza.

The pizza here is very very good, the cheese is a perfect blend of melty crispy with a nice doughy crust and fresh toppings, you can still hear the crunch of the peppers! After ordering and enjoying your pizza, enjoy a nice fountain drink and chat with a neighbor.

The only downside is that the chairs are a bit sticky from spilled sodas, but this is the perfect place to bring the family for a quick casual meal.

Innocent for Dawson Murder!!!

Clark Grey

A jury has declared Zaida Burrego innocent in the case of the suspicious death of Brad Dawson, Zaida Burrego's partner. Zaida Burrego had been charged with the crime and was required to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet until the trial ended.

A few simdays ago, Dawson was found outside his home dead. He was wearing only his underwear and there were five feet of snow on the ground. Hardly a smart move for any sim. The official cause of death was listed as exposure, however police started an investigation due to several tips and the unusually circumstances surrounding the death.

On the property a special weather altering device had been turned on to produce snow in the otherwise balmy spring weather of Apple Valley and the entrance doors were locked with the victim's key sitting on the hook inside. Witnesses have reported that they heard the man yelling to be let into the house.

One witness declared "Brad never forgot his keys...he was top notch military, not the type to forget his keys and get locked outside when no one was at home...except his sleeping lover."

The possible suspect list was small, but after an investigation, Zaida Burrego, an actress on Arrendale Heights, was arrested on charges of murder.

Zaida Burrego and Brad Dawson's son, Zac, aruptly left the hood with his little sister, Zayilla, and fiance, Jodi Dawson. Sources say that he was fearing for his life.

A document from Zac was found stating: I now fear for my life. When I first inquired about immigrating to your hood, it was a simple request of looking for new pasture, but now...well, now my father died under suspicious circumstances and my mother is the main/only suspect and I fear that I am next-not to mention my fiance and my little sister.Zac's location has not been disclosed considering the circumstances.

The trial started simMonday and after the evidence was presented, the jury only stayed in delibration for an hour before delivering the innocent verdict. There are mixed reviews about the trial and some sims even wonder if the jury was threatened since so quickly after the trial, the jury members rushed to submit thier emmigration papers. Unfortunately nothing can be done and justice was served...or was it?

New Environmental Policies

Clark Grey

All sims are responsible for taking care of the world we live in, but now the hood council has made it even easier. Community Director, Rayne Wilsonoff, revealed two new policies that are sure to get residents excited.

Car Tax? Almost, says the hood council. Instead residents that utilize a car instead of public transportation or walking will be asked to contribute financially to the effect thier car has on the environment. That means each car a family owns (that's right each car) will be taxed at a $250 rate each simweek. That's a sure bet to get families selling those cars and walking-thus reducing pollution.

Composting Credits. Families are encouraged to compost-but some families balk at having to buy the expensive container-now that's no longer a concern. Not only will the hood council reimburse any costs that families have for composting, but now each family gets a $100 credit for every full compost they have each simweek.

Trends: Review Smokey Jane's

Clark Grey

In a hood the size of Apple Valley you would wonder if you could find a nice spot for a cultured dinner, but there is one-Smokey Jane's. This resturaunt has a strict dress code and once you step in, you realize why. The cafe opens up with a nice dining section and small retail shop where you can buy vintage cheese, chocolates and smoked meats. Upstairs there's a jazz band, fully stocked bar and even more great food.

When I went I had the Filet Migon with Buttered Asparagus. The meat was tender and juicy but a bit underflavored. It was served with undercooked asparagus. I decided to follow  with a Tangerine Tartlette for dessert. I am glad that I did, the citrus flavor was welcome relief from my earlier disappointing meal.

While the food was lack, the service was divine. I never waited long for my server and the music was a great treat as well.

Overall the food was mediocre, atmosphere was perfect and I would recommend that couples only visit for special occasions.

Four teenagers lined up outside the new building waiting for thier first day at Apple Valley Secondary Academy to begin.

"It's nerve-wrecking. You don't know what to expect." quipped Roy Wilsonoff to the approving nods of his fellow students.

After a welcome address from Hood President, Ayanna Kent, and a brief orientation, the teenagers were placed in thier grade levels (level III or level IV) and met thier teachers. By lunchtime, the students were more laid back and relaxed.

"It's fun. There are lots of cool things-like we get to study yoga in gym!" Janet Dawson squealed in bewteen bites of the cafeteria's swiss grilled cheese catered by local resturaunt, Tati's.

"We like the computer class," twins Grex and Grigia shouted as they bit into thier home brought lunch of deli sandwiches and chips. "We don't have a computer at the farm, so it's good to write papers and chat sometimes."

Once the final bell rang, I managed to get a few words from the administrator and main teacher, Johan Dawson.

"The teens will definately benefit from the school where they can learn skills during school hours, freeing up precious hours at home for homework and extra-curriculars."

Community Director, Rayne Wilsonoff, even gave hints of the future of AVSA. "We'll try to shorten the hours so teens can obtain after-school jobs, also we'll try to expand the staff as well."

New Deal Arrives

Clark Grey

The hood council started the rotation with an open council meeting to discuss the new deal. Residents crowded the council offices to ask questions and voice concerns about the new deal. The most prevelant question was that of the current infrastructure.

"Will there be lockups and traffic delays like last time?" shouted on resident.

The hood council assured residents that all precautions have been taken, however every issue can not be forseen. As a result, residents are asked to report any suspicious behavior as soon as possible. The hood council also revealed plans to open up access to Tiki Island, Kimikura and Schatazweitzier Mountain within the next simday. These locations are closer to the hood and travel times would be significantly reduced. Until then, residents can access Twikkii Island, Takezumi Village and Three Lakes which are further away and with far longer travel times.

"What about the effects on aging?" shouted another resident.

The hood council did reveal that they are exploring the option of having time spent on vacation elaspe in the hood as well. For example, say Family A leaves for vacation on Summer 1, Day 1 and spends three days there. When they return, instead of still being on Summer 1, Day 1-the family would be on Summer 1, Day 3 and have aged the appropiate number of simdays.

"How can we book a vacation?"

In addition to calling the local travel agent, Apple Valley is devoting space in The Centre so residents can ask for advice in thier travel arrangements and read about the locations Apple Valley flies to. There will also be information online about the locations.

Mortgage System Revamped

Clark Grey

The mortgage system has been revamped thanks to numerous complaints by homeowners stuck with mortgages that were eating their paychecks away.

"We wanted a realistic payment plan for families, but perhaps the old system was a little to ambitious."  Financial Director, Ka'obi Sweeny, admitted.

The new mortgage system will feature a payback period of 42 simdays (double the original 21 simday length) and interest rates of 5% (reduced from 6%). Families with mortgages currently on the books will be able to have thier current mortgage refinanced before they are required to make thier first payment.

Does the new mortgage system work? How much relief can residents expect? Let's look at purchasing a $20,000 home. We put forth the required 10% down payment which leaves $18,000 for the principal. Adding the interest rate and dividing the payments gives us a simdaily payment of $450 with the new mortgage system. Less than half of what it would have cost under the old mortgage system ($910).

Trends: Review Tati's

Rayne Wilsonoff

Apple Valley has several trendy spots in spite of it's small size. One of them is Tati's, where you can take the entire family for a delicious ethnic meal or simply grab a quick bite during lunch. Tati's specializes in ethnic fusion fare, meaning, if it's from another culture, you'll probably find it here. There is a seasonal menu full of ethnic meals and it is continually changing as customers make suggestions.

When I went I had the Japenese Golden Trout stuffed with Umi. The fish was delicately flavored and the umi burst in my mouth. It was served with steamed vinegar cabbage and spiced dill. I decided to follow  with Tartelette au Citron for dessert. I am glad that I did, the light citrus flavor gave my tongue a welcome relief from my heavier meal.

While the food was utterly divine, the service was lacking. I waited perhaps a few moments too long for my order to be taken and then a bit longer than I would have liked for my food to arrive. Perhaps this was because the crowd at the door was too much for the small staff to handle.

Overall the food was delicious, atmosphere was perfect and I would recommend that all families make at least one stop here. I know I will.

Jury for Dawson Murder

A jury was chosen for the case of the suspicious death of Brad Dawson, Zaida Burrego's partner.

The woman posted bail and is now residing at home.

Zaida Burrego and Brad Dawson's son, Zac, aruptly left the hood with his little sister, Zayilla, and fiance, Jodi Dawson. Sources say that he was fearing for his life.

A document from Zac was found stating: I now fear for my life. When I first inquired about immigrating to your hood, it was a simple request of looking for new pasture, but now...well, now my father died under suspicious circumstances and my mother is the main/only suspect and I fear that I am next-not to mention my fiance and my little sister.

Zac's location has not been disclosed considering the circumstances.

The trial is scheduled to start this simMonday

Food Expo Ends

It's that time of year again, the time when sims all over the nation celebrate the thing that sustains our lives, food. New Deal

The hood council has voted to suspend the start of the new rotation until after the new deal is signed. Residents greeted this news with groans, but the council explained that it was easier on the administration to start all households with access to the new deal.

The new deal will allow residents access to travels aboard and already plenty of residents are looking forward to it.

"We plan on celebrating our honeymoon," Tatiana Garris Vanderburg said with new husband Chad.

"We're planning a spring break trip." Echoed several university students when asked about the new deal "The beach is supposed to be great!"

Residents in the process of moving, emmigrating or immigrating can still do so until the new deal is signed.

Celebrity Wedding

Sources have confirmed that resident celebrities, Chad Vanderburg and Tatiana Garris, married on August 18th at the Joshua Vineyard in Apple Valley.

We were able to grab a couple of photos of the event, but Tatiana has revealed more details in her blog.

The environmentally friendly day started with colors of sage green, cherry blossom pink and chocolate brown. The couple walked down a petal laced aisle in the vineyard surrounding by the full grapes ready to be harvested and imported cherry blossom trees donated to the vineyard by the couple.

Their guest list read like a dictionary to the latest who's who and those guests were offered the best in favors including designer bags with cherry blossoms imprinted on them and plush blankets.

The bride wore an original A.Pentragnani wedding gown, and her bridesmaids also wore designer gowns from the fashion house. After the ceremony guests enjoyed a full scale meal using local produce and wine planned by the bride to match with the wine.

There were also several pre and post wedding parties including a tea ceremony, morrocan purification spa ritual and henna painting for the bridal couple and guests. Thier wedding was a multi-day event full of cultural elements from around the nation.

New School

Teens from around the hood will welcome a new school this simMonday. Apple Valley Secondary Academy will open it's doors to the teenagers of the hood early simMonday morning. Students will enjoy the school's amenities of a cafeteria with food catered by Tati's (a meal plan can be purchased), advanced lab with chemistry and electronic crafting equiptment, a computer lab, classrooms, gym and cooking lab. Johan Dawson was chosen as the administrator and teacher of the school. He will live in the three bedroom, on campus house.

Moving Day

As simSunday draws to a close, several residents are taking advantage of the simweekly Moving Day. Established to help control the movement of residents bewteen empty lots, Moving Day occurs every simMonday and is the only simday each simweek in which residents are allowed to move to an empty lot. Moving Day ensures that all residents are on the same simday (ie, simday 44 is simWednesday in every household); prevents superficial movement bewteen homes and increases family pride in their property. Community Director, Rayne Wilsonoff, spoke of the custom. "Since Moving Day was accepted families are more proud of thier properties, each lot has a sense of warmth, personality and style."

This Moving Day was the first since the approved mortgage system has been in place. As a result, more than 60% of the households that moved gained a mortgage as well as a new home. Financial Director, Ka'obi Sweeny, met with individuals and discussed thier options in terms of the mortgage. "Many families complained about the high mortgage payments, however in order for thier loan to be paid in full within 21 simdays, high payments were neccessary. Refinances will be available in the near future as we examine and research the new mortgage method."

Celebrity Wedding Countdown

The passage of a few simdays will bring one of the largest events seen in Apple Valley since the Superstar tour of the old dimension. Sources have confirmed that resident celebrities, Chad Vanderburg and Tatiana Garris, are getting married on August 18th at the Joshua Vineyard in Apple Valley.

Joshua's Vineyard was hush hush on the details, but with a little sleathing, the details of the environmentally friendly day were pieced together. Colors of the event are sage green, cherry blossom pink and chocolate brown. The couple will walk down a petal laced aisle in the vineyard surrounding by the full grapes ready to be harvested and imported cherry blossom trees donated to the vineyard by the couple.

Their guest list reads like a dictionary to the latest who's who, the venue is set and ready for the nuptials and residents are calling in more and more celebrity sightings from everysim like Josie Harlow, Alexis Havers and Jasmine Dream. The residence of the celebrities has not been confirmed, but rumors are that they are staying in studio condos on Bottom Beach (the site of Pahala Shore) and will be ferried to the event.

The bride will be fitted in an original A.Pentragnani designed for her, as well as her bridesmaids which include Josie Harlow and Alexis Havers along with the bride's future sister-in-law. Groomsmen include A'ron Sweeny and the groom's brother and brother-in-law. After the ceremony guests will enjoy a full scale meal using local produce and wine. It is common knowledge that the bride planned the menu to match with the wine and after tasting her cooking, it is sure to be a treat.

There are also rumors of a tea ceremony, morrocan purification spa ritual and henna painting for the bridal couple and guests. Thier wedding will be sure to be a multi-day event full of cultural elements from around the nation.

Zaida Burrego and Brad Dawson's son, Zac, aruptly left the hood with his little sister, Zayilla, and fiance, Jodi Dawson. Sources say that he was fearing for his life.

June in Apple Valley

Opening Ceremony, June @ Farmer's Market
The opening ceremony was indeed a grand event. Hood Council President Ayanna Kent gave an exciting lecture titled "Introduction to the Food Expo and a History Lesson: Grilling Traditions" and there were free hot dogs, hamburgers, and cake available to all at the Farmer's Market during the opening ceremony. Residents were asked to purchase tickets for $60 a family to attend all Food Expo events, contests, lectures and even raffles. I must say, that is a great deal considering the amount of free samples and discounts that are given during the event each year.

Lectures @ Farmer's Market
This June, there were two lectures from local residents. Medical Centre Manager, Jan Dawson spoke about "Juice and Your Health" and many sims were seen afterwards purchasing crates of oranges and apples. Also speaking was Leroy Mendenhall, owner of Farmer's Market, on the eternal debate of "Organic vs Processed" in which he demonstrated gardening pratices that produce organic produce.

Exhibits:
In addition to lectures and free tastings, exhibits and other events were held during the month of June. "Trends in Gardening Tools" held at the Farmer's Market featured tools that make gardening easer. Some products worth mentioning include a Produce Packer from SimsWardrobe that helps farmers pack thier harvest in crates of twelve and a Honey Beehive from Katy76 that enabled sims to collect honey from the nesting bees and eat it later (or of course sell it).

Charity Cook-Out @ Apple Vally Historical Church: The cook-out featured hamburgers and hotdogs and plenty of cake and tea. Tickets were $10 each and were going to help raise money to renovate the church and build a pastoral study for counseling. Over $200 was raised on the cook-out and more would have been raised if the rain hadn't came and dampered the event. Also, the ligthening that put a tree on fire didn't do much for fundraising either.

Contests:
There were two contests during June in honor of the Food Expo. First there was the Fishing Contest: Adults Division at Celebration Park. Contestants were able to fish any time during thier leisure for four hours straight. Then judges awarded a total score based on the following rubic: Total Score=1 point for each fish caught + 1 point for each Largemouth Bass/Blue catfish/Jumbo largemouth bass caught + 2 points for each Rainbow trout/Jumbo blue catfish/Jumbo rainbow trout caught + 3 points for each Golden Trout caught. The winner was declared to be Pablo Herendez with a total of six points.

The next contest was the Children's Cook-Off: Muffins at Farmer's Market: Roy Wilsonoff and Viranza Marsh both baked muffins in toy ovens. Roy added raisins to his muffin, while Viranza added bosenberries. The judges were A'ron Sweeny and Darrel Kent. Based off taste, originality and presentation, Roy Wilsonoff was declared the winner.

Other Events:
Families took advantage of the Food Expo Celebration and warm weather to host BBQs, visit the various events, try new recipes and redo thier backyards with elaborate patios, new grills and patio seating.

Apple Dumpling Ball

Teens from around the hood enjoyed the Apple Dumpling Ball at The Centre. All teenagers were invited and tickets were $50 each. Formal attire was required though dates were not. The theme was Harvest Moon. Photographs were $15 each. The entire evening was dedicated to the three teens that lost thier life in the school bus accident and Hazel Starr Grey played a memorial song for the teens. Tobi Sweeny and Hazel Starr Grey were named Mr and Ms Teen Scream at the event.
