Power Rankings - Updated 5/8
1. Arizona Diamondbacks
If Max Scherzer lives up to his hype, there’s no question that the Diamondbacks are the team to beat in the MLB right now.
2. Boston Red Sox
Winning 5 of their last 6, the Red Sox should be cruising as Josh Beckett returns to last season’s form (3-2, 34 K, .96 WHIP, .200 BAA).
3. Los Angeles Angels
Even with all the injuries they stay atop their division. With Lackey and Kendrick getting back to 100% this team should be dangerous.
4. Chicago Cubs
Geovany Soto is leading this team with a .345 AVG, .447 OBP, .647 SLG, and 24 RBIs.
5. St. Louis Cardinals
7-3 in their last 10 games, Pujols is leading his team (and the majors) with a .494 OBP.
6. Oakland Athletics
Riding a 4 game win streak, they take their 22-14 record into a Texas, a team who struggles playing at home.
7. Philadelphia Phillies
Chase Utley would be the NL MVP if voting starts now. He’s hitting a .350 AVG, .431 OBP, 1.168 OBS, 13 HRs, and 27 RBIs.
8. Los Angeles Dodgers
8-2 in their last 10 games, Furcal is leading his team with a .366 AVG, .448 OBP, and 1.045 OPS.
9. Florida Marlins
The most surprising team of this year is backed by Scott Olsen, 4-1, 2.22 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and .186 BAA in 7 starts this year.
10. New York Mets
They’ve been inconsistent this year, but David Wright is keeping this team afloat with 28 RBIs and 6 HRs.
11. Houston Astros
On a 5-game win streak, Lance Berkman is hitting an amazing .361 AVG, 11 HRs, and 33 RBIs.
12. Atlanta Braves
They’ll be better when they get John Smoltz back, whose ERA is at 2.00 and is getting a mere 1.11 WHIP.
13. Tampa Bay Rays
They’re in the thick of their division due to a 14-11 record against teams in their division.
14. New York Yankees
Hard to figure this team out who has been up and down all season. They need to find some consistent pitching
15. Chicago White Sox
They’re pitching is good being in the top 10 in ERA, hits allowed, walks, and WHIP. Now they just need some offense.
16. Minnesota Twins
17. Milwaukee Brewers
18. Cleveland Indians
19. Baltimore Orioles
20. Tampa Bay Rays
21. Texas Rangers
22. Detroit Tigers
23. Pittsburgh Pirates
24. Kansas City Royals
25. Seattle Mariners
26. Washington Nationals
27. San Francisco Giants
28. Cincinnati Reds
29. Colorado Rockies
30. San Diego Padres

Who’s Better – Crosby or Ovechkin? -By Hockey Writer Alex
While most Capital fans would argue for Ovechkin and most Penguin fans would argue or Crosby, it is clear that Alexander Ovechkin is the all around better hockey player in the NHL. He has a higher number of goals (57, the most in the NHL) and far more points than Crosby (32). Most would argue that this is because he had his high ankle sprain and missed a month and a half of play time. But when you look at the percentages Ovechkin still has a huge lead in goals per game (0.781 vs. 0.45). Again, some would argue that goals aren’t the only things that win hockey games and yes assists to matter but you really need goals mtore than assists. Alexander Ovechkin can carry the puck by himself better than Sidney Crosby. Sidney Crosby was named the youngest captain in the NHL because he was simply the best player on the team. I will be honest, he did not have to beat out too many good players. Crosby’s only competition would come from Marian Hossa and Evgeni Malkin. Ovechkin is only an alternate but he plays on a much better team. The Capitals’ whole line-up is stacked with good players: Nicklas Backstrom, Sergei Federov (long time player for the Detroit Red Wings), Tomas Fleischmann, Alexander Semin and Viktor Kozlov. He has much more competition than Sidney Crosby to get a patch on his jersey. In the end, Alexander Ovechkin has better stats that Crosby and plays for a deeper team that has a better chance of making it deep into the playoffs. But stats aren’t the only things that matter. Ovechkin skates with more speed and has an amazingly quick release on his shots that often beats goaltenders.
