Lasius niger - the common black garden ant
Perhaps the best known ant of England is Lasius niger, the common black garden ant.
It tends to nest under pavements, in soil nearly everywhere never people.
It's colonies can grow up to a large size of 10,000 .They eat insects, nectar, , or ants from other colonies. They are also very attracted to sugary substances.
Lasius flavus - the yellow meadow ant
Another common ant found in gardens is Lasius flavus, the yellow meadow ant. These ants build small mounds. It is the most skilled nest builder found in the UK Lasius flavus tend to forage below ground and therefore are not often seen except perhaps when its nest is disturbed.
Formica rufa - the red wood ant
Another common British ant are those belonging to the species Formica.
These species build huge mounds from pine needles and other woodland litter in forest clearings and can number more than 100,000 members per colony.
These ants are large and vey aggressive, and attack by biting and spraying formic acid very effectively used.

Myrmica rubra
They are slender medium sized at they are agressive and posses a powerful sting which is not barbed like some species of bee's so they can keep stinging.They do not form over large nest with the adverage nest containing 150 workers and several queens other species only have one queen and will not tolerate another. 
Tetramorium caespitum
This ant is a small black stinging ant.
They are typically found along the coasts of Southern and Western England as I have never seen them.
They can have nests containign up to 25,000 ants.
