ANTHROPOLOGY CLUB HAS BEEN NAMED CLUB OF THE YEAR AT FPU FOR THE 2007-2008 YEAR!

March 2008

The club attended the NEAA's on March 9th and 10th right after working on Up All Night at the University. Club vice president Jessie Gagnon presented her paper Escape from the mainstream; Japanese Cosplay Youth Culture in the panel New Approaches in Anthropology Methods and Theory . The paper is part of her undergraduate thesis which builds upon years of research and her trip to Japan in the summer of 2006.

The Club is sponsoring a visit from the Peace Corps to the campus on April 17th at 7 p.m to talk about oppurtunities with the Peace Corps after graduation. The Peace Corps not only provides outstanding international experience, it also provides students the oppurtunity to fund and attend graduate school throughout service.

Our department will also be hosting the CNEA's (Conference on New England Archaeology) on April 19, 2008 in Pierce Hall.

Hello Everyone!

Check out an insanely comprehensive listing of Field Schools in the USA via the Archaeological Institute of America. All field schools are listed for 2008, I definitely recommend you take some time to look over these schools and plan for a summer field school.

At our last meeting we discussed bringing in a Peace Corps talker to speak to classes next semester about working abroad and taking advantage of earning a Masters Degree through the Peace Corps.

We are also currently researching how to bring more foreign language to FPU so that Anthropology students can have a competitive edge when applying for Graduate schools, most of which require knowledge of foreign languages. Members voiced an interest in pursuing French, Greek and German.

Our club would also like to work with the Fine Arts Department to create a joint space on the Rindge campus for a Cultural Center. This center would be a place for Fine Art students to display their work, and the Anthropology students to create exhibits and display the departments artifacts, as well as present current research. It was unanimously voted to make this our Spring initiative.

The club will also be traveling to the New England Anthropology Conference this spring, and four members (Jack, Celine, Ian and Jessie) were invited to and will attend the American Institute of Archeology conference in Chicago this January.

Club sweatshirts are in! See Jack for more information.

Work is also continuing on: Polynesian culture night, a computer for the lab, and teacher appreciation.

The Museum of Science exhibit that the club participated on was a huge success!!!

"Students from the FPU Anthropology Club, who were invited to do a two-day presentation at the American Institute of Archaeology's Archaeology Fair, held at the Boston Museum of Science. The fair attracted over 3000 visitors, and the students have been asked to appear at the next AIA fair in Chicago in February, 2008."

We've got pictures up in the photo section take a look!

Invisible Children also recently stopped by on their world tour again to show the film, committee meetings are underway to raise more funds for the children of Northern Uganda. Help us rebuild a school and go to http://s4s.invisiblechildren.com/school/franklin-pierce-college and sign up in support of the anthropology club, you can make a donation as small as $5! If the club raises the most money students will be allowed to travel to Northern Uganda this summer to work on the Atanga Secondary School, which we have been raising money for the past two school years. Help us get to Uganda!!!

Our budgets came through and we will not be attending the AAA's. The cost was too great, but we can only keep trying for future club members. We will be doing most of the other activities we proposed, including a conference in the spring. Keep checking back for updates and photos.

For the Fall 2007 we have heaps of stuff planned!

Anthro Club at the Boston Museum of Science!!

We have been invited to do an exhibit at the Boston Museum of Science's archaeology fair on october 5th and 6th and have been accepted to do an atlatl exhibit and demonstration. We will have our own table with posters that discuss the history, construction, and physics of throwing atlatls. We will also be periodically demonstrating atlatl throwing in the theatre (with rubber stoppers of course) to groups that come throughout the day. Friday is school day and they are expecting two thousand school children. Saturday they are expecting eight thousand people from the general public! We are going to be the only other university there besides for Harvard, and all the other groups are going to be museums and professional organizations.

Chimney Point Atlatl Championship

The club will be traveling to the Chimney Point State Historic Site on September 16th to compete in the Eleventh Annual Open Atlatl Championship. This will be the third year in a row club members will attend the cultural event which allows all levels of atlatl users to have target practice with other volunteers. http://www.historicvermont.org/chimneypoint/atlatl/

Triple A's

The 106th annual meeting of the Anthropology Association of America will be held from November 28th until December 2 in Washington D.C. This is our primary goal this year!!! To get to this conference! We are going to work hard to organize this trip and get it approved by the College in an attempt to make AAA conferences an event that the FPU Anthropology Club attends annually. http://www.aaanet.org/

Invisible Children

Last year the Anthropology Club raised over $2,500 in one month to rebuild a school in Northern Uganda through the Invisible Children Foundation. They will be stopping in on their world tour again at FPU in October to show the film and updates to the University. Members Diego and Niki of the club will be heading a sub-committee which will be responsible for a massive fundraising effort to support the foundation and help the citizens of Northern Uganda who have been displaced from a 21 year long war. http://www.invisiblechildren.com

Achill Archaeological Field School

The Anthroplogy Club will be working this year to create a link with the Achill Archaeological Field School in DooAgh Ireland. Students from FPU have traveled there in the past for a visit in order to engage with the history and archaeology of Ireland. This year we would like to allow for students to easily participate in this field school for the entire summer and facilitate the exchange of students from our department to the field school in Ireland. http://achill-fieldschool.com/mambo/
