The Maya were at their
moast powerful from about 200 to900, although their culture lasted unthe Spanish
conquest of Central America in the early 1500s. The Maya lived in well organized
city-states. Bird-catchers traded colorful feathers, which were used to make headdresses.
In the countryside, farmers cleared forest land and terraced the hillsides to grow
beans, corn, and squash. They raised turkies and keept bees, but the Maya had no
domestic animals outher than dogs and no vehicles outher than toy cars.
The largest city was Tikal
which is now Guatemala, with a population of 60,000
