Death Eaters
This contains all my observations, questions and massive quoting in regard to Death Eaters since reading Order of the Phoenix. These things are in no particular order and I’m going to try to make sense so please bear with me.

1.    Ludovic Bagman – M.I.A. While not convicted of being a Death Eater, that does not mean he wasn’t a Death Eater. Last we heard, he was on the run to avoid paying gambling debts. Or was that the real reason?

GoF, Chapter 37:
“‘He put a bet on you, mate,’ said Fred. ‘Put a big bet on you to win the Tournament. Bet against the goblins.’
‘So that’s why he kept trying to help me win!’ said Harry. ‘Well - I did win, didn’t I? So he can pay you your gold!’
‘Nope,’ said George, shaking his head. ‘The goblins play as dirty as him. They say you drew with Diggory, and Bagman was betting you’d win outright. So Bagman had to run for it. He made a run for it right after the third task.’”

Karkaroff also made a run for it right after the third task. When he felt the mark on his arm. Gambling debts could just be a red herring. Bagman, like Karkaroff did not stick by Voldemort at their trials, pleading ignorance.

GoF, Chapter 30:
“‘But I’ve told you, I had no idea!’ Bagman called earnestly over the crowd’s babble, his round blue eyes widening. ‘None at all! Old Rookwood was a friend of my dad’s . . . never crossed my mind he was in with You-Know-Who! I thought I was collecting information for our side! And Rookwood kept talking about getting me a job in the Ministry later on ... once my Quidditch days are over, you know ... I mean, I can’t keep getting hit by Bludgers for the rest of my life, can I?’”

He did end up working for the Ministry didn’t he? Personally I think this is unlikely, but not implausible.

2.    Bagman’s father – Another Death Eater? I have nothing to back this up, other than he was friends with Rookwood. It isn’t even known if he is alive or dead. I just think that I should list even the tiniest possibility.

3.    Severus Snape – Apparently no longer a Death Eater. But there is still two books left…

4.    Travers – Who the hell is he? All we know about Travers is that he helped murder the McKinnons and that the Ministry had him. We don’t know if he is alive or dead. I have three possibilities for him alone which are explored elsewhere in this page.

5.    The Fourth Dead Death Eater is unaccounted for.

GoF, Chapter 33:
“He had reached the largest gap of all, and he stood surveying it with his blank, red eyes, as though he could see people standing there.
‘And here we have six missing Death Eaters . . . three dead in my service. One, too cowardly to return ... he will pay. One, who I believe has left me forever ... he will be killed, of course . . . and one, who remains my most faithful servant, and who has already re-entered my service.’”

Since I am still suspicious of the gambling excuse, I think the Death Eater who did a runner could be either Ludo Bagman or Karkaroff. Most likely Karkaroff. The Death Eater who has left we can only assume is Snape. The most faithful servant is of course, Barty Crouch.

This leaves the three dead Death Eaters. By the end of GoF, Sirius has given us two names:

GoF, Chapter 27:
“‘Rosier and Wilkes - they were both killed by Aurors the year before Voldemort fell.’”

Rosier’s death is later confirmed after Harry’s trip into Dumbledore’s pensive. In OotP we do learn of a third dead Death Eater, though I do not believe this is the one Voldemort was referring to.

OotP, Chapter 6:
“Sirius jabbed a finger at the very bottom of the tree, at the name ‘Regulus Black’. A date of death (some fifteen years previously) followed the date of birth.”

OotP, Chapter 6:
“‘Was he killed by an Auror?’ Harry asked tentatively.
‘Oh, no,’ said Sirius. ‘No, he was murdered by Voldemort. Or on Voldemort’s orders, more likely; I doubt Regulus was ever important enough to be killed by Voldemort in person. From what I found out after he died, he got in so far, then panicked about what he was being asked to do and tried to back out. Well, you don’t just hand in your resignation to Voldemort. It’s a lifetime of service or death.’”

Notice the death occurred the year Harry was born. Voldemort fell when Harry was a year old. However Voldemort describes the three as dying in his service, while (assuming Sirius’ information is correct) Regulus Black was killed by his own for cowardice. That is not dying in service. So we have one dead Death Eater unaccounted for.

It could be argued that this is in reference to Professor Quirrell, who certainly died in service. However he never really was given Death Eater status. We didn’t even learn about the Death Eaters till GoF, chapter nine:

“A crowd of wizards, tightly packed and moving together with wands pointing straight upwards, was marching slowly across the field. Harry squinted at them . . . they didn’t seem to have faces . . . then he realised that their heads were hooded and their faces masked. High above them, floating along in midair, four struggling figures were being contorted into grotesque shapes. It was as though the masked wizards on the ground were puppeteers, and the people above them were marionettes operated by invisible strings that rose from the wands into the air. Two of the figures were very small.
More wizards were joining the marching group, laughing and pointing up at the floating bodies. Tents crumpled and fell as the marching crowd swelled. Once or twice Harry saw one of the marchers blast a tent out of his way with his wand. Several caught fire. The screaming grew louder.”

This is our first sighting of them before we actually learn what they are. Then later:

“‘Well, it didn’t help us tonight, whoever conjured it. It scared the Death Eaters away the moment they saw it. They all Disapparated before we’d got near enough to unmask any of them. We caught the Robertses before they hit the ground, though. They’re having their memories modified right now.’
‘Death Eaters?’ said Harry. ‘What are Death Eaters?’
‘It’s what You-Know-Who’s supporters called themselves,’ said Bill. ‘I think we saw what’s left of them tonight - the ones who managed to keep themselves out of Azkaban, anyway.’”

Quirrell was only in Voldemort’s clutches for about two years at most. It doesn’t look like he got a chance to get his own Death Eater uniform. He is not the Mystery Dead Death Eater.

6.    Not all Death Eaters at the cemetery were identified. Nor was the exact number of Death Eaters there.

GoF, Chapter 33:
“The Death Eaters behind him did the same; each of them approaching Voldemort on his knees, and kissing his robes, before backing away and standing up, forming a silent circle, which enclosed Tom Riddle’s grave, Harry, Voldemort, and the sobbing and twitching heap that was Wormtail. Yet they left gaps in the circle, as though waiting for more people.”

GoF, Chapter 33:
“Voldemort moved on, and stopped, staring at the space - large enough for two people – which separated Malfoy and the next man.
‘The Lestranges should stand here,’ said Voldemort quietly. ‘But they are entombed in Azkaban. They were faithful. They went to Azkaban rather than renounce me. . . . when Azkaban is broken open, the Lestranges will be honoured beyond their dreams.’”

GoF, Chapter 33:
“He walked on. Some of the Death Eaters he passed in silence, but he paused before others, and spoke to them.”

These quotes show that although the Death Eaters left gaps in the circle, they weren’t very accurate ones. Also, that we didn’t meet all the Death Eaters. For instance, the gap fit for two people was attributed to the Lestranges, but what about Rabastan Lestrange, brother of Rodolphus?  He was in Azkaban too! Along with seven other Death Eaters who escape from Azkaban in OotP. There was no gap for these eight people! Death Eaters can’t count? Once again, if Ludo Bagman didn’t do a runner from Voldemort, he may be the one of the unnamed Death Eaters. Maybe his dad too if he’s still alive. I really have nothing to back this up, except timing. I must just really not like the Bagman’s.

7.    Not all ten of the escaped Death Eaters were identified.

OotP, Chapter 25:
“‘What?’ said Harry and Ron together.
For answer she spread the newspaper on the table in front of them and pointed at ten black-and-white photographs that filled the whole of the front page, nine showing wizards’ faces and the tenth, a witch’s.”

“Antonin Dolohov, read the legend beneath a wizard with a long, pale, twisted face who was sneering up at Harry, convicted of the brutal murders of Gideon and Fabian Prewett.
Algernon Rookwood, said the caption beneath a pockmarked man with greasy hair who was leaning against the edge of his picture, looking bored, convicted of leaking Ministry of Magic secrets to He Who Must Not Be Named.

“Bellatrix Lestrange, convicted of the torture and permanent incapacitation of Frank and Alice Longbottom.”

At news of the breakout, these are the only names we are given. Three out of ten. We can further complete the list based on what we have already learned. For instance:

OotP, Chapter 9:
“‘. . . Gideon Prewett, it took five Death Eaters to kill him and his brother Fabian, they fought like heroes . . .’” – Alastor ‘Mad Eye’ Moody

Also, from GoF, chapter 30 we already knew that four Death Eaters were connected with the attack on the Longbottoms, though then we were only given the name of Barty Crouch. However, we learn the names of the other three who were sent to Azkaban with him from Sirius.

OotP, Chapter 6:
“‘Bellatrix and her husband Rodolphus came in with Barty Crouch junior,’ said Sirius, in the same brusque voice. ‘Rodolphus’s brother Rabastan was with them, too.’”

Two more names. Five out of ten. These are the only names I can confirm with a certainty. Later Lucius Malfoy himself is kind enough to give us a roll call:

OotP, Chapter 35:
“Footsteps and shouts echoed from behind the door they had just sealed; Harry put his ear close to the door to listen and heard Lucius Malfoy roar, ‘Leave Nott, leave him, I say — his injuries will be nothing to the Dark Lord compared to losing that prophecy. Jugson, come back here, we need to organise! We’ll split into pairs and search, and don’t forget, be gentle with Potter until we’ve got the prophecy, you can kill the others if necessary — ‘Bellatrix, Rodolphus, you take the left; Crabbe, Rabastan, go right — ‘Jugson, Dolohov, the door straight ahead — Macnair and Avery, through here — Rookwood, over there — Mulciber, come with me!’”

By referring to GoF, chapter 33, we can determine who among these was NOT in Azkaban. This allows us to add two more names, Jugson and Mulciber. Mulciber was caught by the Ministry of Magic, though we never learnt whether or not he was sent to Azkaban. Also, since there were some people left unidentified at the cemetery in GoF, it is possible he was among these if not in Azkaban. The same goes for Jugson, who is someone we haven’t heard of until now. Seven out of ten. Maybe.

I can only speculate as to the identities of the remaining three. According to the Daily Prophet, there were nine wizards and one witch. We know five Death Eaters killed the Prewetts, but only one of them has been identified. There is also Travers, who I’ve mentioned briefly before. It was never confirmed that Travers was sent to Azkaban but we know he was in the custody of the Ministry and he did not appear in the cemetery in GoF. So it is possible that Travers is one of the remaining three men. If Travers wasn’t at the cemetery.

These are the only references to Travers:

GoF, Chapter Thirty:
    “‘Any more?’ said Crouch.
‘Yes!’ said Karkaroff. ‘There was Travers – he helped murder the McKinnons!’”

And shortly after:
“‘But Travers and Mulciber we have,’ said Mr. Crouch.”

I’ve considered the possibility that Jugson IS Travers, (as in, Jugson Travers/Travers Jugson) but this is unlikely and I have nothing to back that up other than the fact that both of them have only one name.

One of them could be Ludovic Bagman’s dad. Ha Ha! Nope, even I have to admit this is weak. If his father was a living Death Eater, he would have been one of the unnamed at the cemetery.

So are left with two or three unidentified escaped Death Eaters. Possibly five. I have no idea who they are.

8.    Goyle Sr. was never mentioned as being at the Department of Mysteries, yet we know Crabbe Sr. was there. Where was Goyle Sr.?

9.    There seems to be something between Severus Snape and Lucius Malfoy other than the typical Death Eater camaraderie (!) that we are yet to be let in on but is hinted at.

GoF, Chapter 36:
“‘Look, I saw Voldemort come back!’ Harry shouted. He tried to get out of bed again, but Mrs. Weasley forced him back. ‘I saw the Death Eaters! I can give you their names! Lucius Malfoy –’

Snape made a sudden movement, but as Harry looked at him, Snape’s eyes flew back to Fudge.”

OotP, Chapter 24:
“‘Tell me, how is Lucius Malfoy these days? I expect he’s delighted his lapdog’s working at Hogwarts, isn’t he?’” – Sirius Black to Severus Snape

OotP, Chapter 32:
“‘You are on probation!’ shrieked Professor Umbridge, and Snape looked back at her, his eyebrows slightly raised. ‘You are being deliberately unhelpful! I expected better, Lucius Malfoy always speaks most highly of you! Now get out of my office!’”

It seems that even though Lucius Malfoy must know that Snape was a spy Snape has made an effort to show favouritism towards Draco and loathing towards Harry (though admittedly this is probably not difficult for Snape), so even though he’s probably not acting, it may in some way be necessary for Snape to treat Harry like dirt.

10.    Voldemort addresses Bellatrix as Bella (beautiful). Hmmm… I don’t suppose the fact that Bellatrix is married would bother Voldemort. Also Bellatrix seems to suggest that she was personally trained in the Dark Arts by Voldemort himself and is his “most loyal” servant. Again, Hmmm… and possibly, Ewww.

11.    Voldemort is a half blood. Do his Death Eaters know? Do they care? Standing at the grave of his father in GoF, they should have realised they were in a Muggle cemetery, unless wizards are often buried in Muggle cemeteries, we do not know what wizard burial customs are. (Why don’t we have Harry visit his parent’s graves?) At the very least Lucius Malfoy should know, since he had Tom Riddle’s diary. Or maybe he just kept his beloved Bella in the dark on that one.

12.    Where is Wormtail? See Noticeably Absent.

13.    Where is Karkaroff? See Noticeably Absent.

14.    Who is Jugson?

15.    How many Death Eaters are there, and who are they? Argh, my head hurts.
