COMPARISON
Compared to the Native
American Canoe, the Hawaiian Canoe's function was the same, used for
transportation, and for trade. Several instances, such as
mentioned in the Hawaiian Canoe section, show the usefulness of this
mode of transportation. It wasn't just used to transport the
goods, but ali'i as well, especially in time of needs. In Canada,
the canoe transported the chiefs, and goods, just as the Hawaiians did.
The area where canoes were used were
all common: in great lake regions, islands, or bay areas. The
people used the canoes to hunt, migrate, or travel from place to place,
even the Hawaiians. Some of the different tribes were very
similar to the Hawaiians, especially among the west coast. For
example, the Nuu-chah-Nulth had their own form of a manu, with the same
function. Theirs was in the form of a wolf head with wide, flared
siades and square stern, giving stability on rough seas.
