University establishes Millennium Celebration Committee
Arbaminch, August 18, 2007 (WIC):
Arbaminch University disclosed that it has established a Millennium Celebration Committee that could help ensure food security and consolidate environmental conservation.
University External and Public Relations Head, Getu Lemma, told WIC that the committee would design and introduce small irrigation projects.
He said the committee would have a pivotal role in supporting the efforts that the country has been exerting to alleviate poverty and ensure food security.
The committee will also facilitate ways on how university scholars could design various projects that reduce unemployment, Getu added.
It has so far been trying to establish a forum that enable students to promote their cultural, natural and historical values by organizing workshops, sport competitions and exhibitions, it was pointed out.
HIV/AIDS Prevention and Controlling Council has been formed under the committee so as to provide VCT services for teachers, students and the community.
The committee has recently transplanted 5,000 indigenous tree seedlings by coordinating teachers and students of the university, he finally recalled.
Arbaminch University to launch five post-graduate, undergraduate programs next academic year(WIC)
April 02, 2007 (WIC):
The Arbaminch University disclosed that it would launch three post-graduate and two undergraduate programs next academic year.
University President Dr Tarekegn Tadesse told WIC that the university would enroll post-graduate students in metrology, water provision and sanitation engineering, and integrated water management.
The university would also open new faculties of agriculture and health in the undergraduate program, according to the president.
It would subsequently train health officers, nurses, clinical nurses, laboratory technologists and midwives in the health faculty, he explained.
Students in plant science, animal science, forestry, agricultural extension would also be admitted in the agriculture faculty, according to Dr Tarekegn.
Accordingly, the university is undertaking expansion works at a cost of 65 million birr to accommodate the students to be admitted.
Arbaminch University has 6,550 undergraduate and 55 post-graduate students, it was learnt.
Arbaminch University conducting research works on 22 community-based projects (WIC)
March 28, 2007 :
Arbaminch University has reportedly been conducting research works on 22 community-based projects that are believed to have a significant contribution towards poverty reduction.
University President, Dr Tarekegn Tadesse, told WIC that the university has been conducting research works that focus on ensuring food security, small and micro enterprises, population growth and land utilization, springs and wells development, water harvesting, topography, ecology and biodiversity.
The new research projects will be carried out in various parts of the country, the president said, adding that they were designed based on their being practically implemented by the community.
A research that focuses on water sanitation and disposal of wastages is underway in Arbaminch town in collaboration with Roza, a Non-Governmental Organization, with 1.5 million birr financial aid obtained from European Union (EU), Dr Tarekegn said.
German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), the governments of France, Norway, the Netherlands and the Ethiopian Science and Technology Institute have donated money for the execution of the projects that focus on the socio–economic problems of the country, he said, adding that the university has also allocated close to 300,000 birr for the execution of the research and for basic expenditure.
The university was previously restricted to research works that focused only on irrigation development and water related research works, according to the president. It has currently been conducting research works that have a significant contribution towards poverty reduction, it was learnt.
Arba Minch University: completes expansion project (WIC)
December 23 2006:
The 70-million-birr expansion project of Arbaminch University has reportedly been fully completed.
University President, Dr. Tarekegn Tadesse, told WIC yesterday that the project included the construction of a dinning room for over 1,000 students and a library that can accommodate more than 800 students.
The university also constructed a building comprising classrooms for the over 2,400 students newly admitted students this academic year, he said, adding that 21 buildings each with a capacity of accommodating over 500 students and a laboratory were also built.
Currently the university is offering post graduate training in Water resources to 10 students from Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi, in addition to Ethiopian students, Dr. Tarekegn further stated.
Ethiopia: Universities, Colleges Graduate Students
July 24 2006:
Minister of Education Dr. Sentayehu Wolde-Michael said the number of universities in the country has been increased by threefold, while their enrolment capacity reached to over 36,000 over the past ten years.
Dr. Sentayehu made the remark at a graduation of Gondar University students yesterday.
The University graduated over 2,000 students with doctorate, masters, bachelor degrees and diplomas.
