About Arbaminch University

Arbaminch University is one of the universities found in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR). It is located at Arba Minch town, 500 km south of Addis Ababa in the vicinity of unique natural and anthropogenic diversity. The university is founded on 200 ha of land, at the eastern foot of Gamo mountain ranges and adjacent to the vast low lying land streching towards Lake Abaya and forming part of the East African Rift valley.

Arbaminch University, is officially inaugurated in June 2004. During this time it comprised four faculties, one institute and one school. These are Water Technology Institute, Engineering faculty, Applied Sciences Faculty, Business and Economics Faculty and the School of Post Graduate Studies. The Progenitor of the present Arba Minch University was the former Arba Minch Water Technology Institute (AWTI), which was established in 1986 with the objective of producing trained professonals in the field of water resources. At present, the university runs both undergraduate and post graduate programs, and enrolls about 6000 students (2004/05 academic year) in the regular and continuing education (evening, weekend and summer) programs. It is expected that with the ongoing expansion a number of faculties and programs will be openned and the enrollment capacity will increase to over 10, 000 by 2010.
