Amigo Fiel dog rescue in Quito, Ecuador

Welcome to the new page, and thank you for visiting. Amigo Fiel is a non-profit organization in Quito, Ecuador run completely by dedicated volunteers. There is no support from the government, and the organization runs on nothing more than the donations received.

The stray dog problem in Quito is horrendous, where there are an estimated 300,000 dogs on the street who go ignored by the government for most of the year, except during the poisoning campaigns, in which people paid by the government go around sectors distributing strychnine to all dogs in sight, provoking a long and painful death. Dogs are hit by cars and left to die, at times suffocated and found on the side of the road, hung, abused, and the list goes on. The volunteers of Amigo Fiel are working toward the long term goal of educating the youth about the basic rights that animals have, and their sensitivity, so that there can be a brighter future for dogs and cats in the country. However, finding adoptive homes has been difficult, and it appears as though the dogs currently in the shelter, many waiting more than a year for a family, will not be lucky.

For over a year now, the few volunteers of Amigo Fiel have continued this uphill battle, finding homes in the States and in Ecuador for over sixty dogs in that span. People have opened their hearts and adopted from California, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Seattle, Oregon, and beyond into British Columbia and Ontario.

In April of 2008, Amigo Fiel will come to an end, and unless there are 37 adoptions in the new year, so will the dogs that remain in the shelter. You can help by adopting, donating, or simply spreading the word!
