AAPE Champions' Photobiographies

Once a year,  American Association of Philatelic Exhibitors sponsor a youth exhibit featuring the work of outstanding youth (primarily from the U.S.A. and Canada).  Each participant who has won a youth grand award at a nationally accredited show, as listed,  in the United States or Canada, with at least a national level silver medal.

  • The program began as the American Youth Stamp Exhibiting Competition following a concept advanced by John Hotchner in 1987,  which was adopted as an activity of AAPE.
  • The first chairman of AYSEC was Carl Burnett of Melbourne, Florida.   He began the work of organizing in 1988,  and the first running was at FLOREX '90.
  • Mike Jolly followed Burnett as Chairman,  and Canadian shows were added as qualifiers.  Following Jolly's untimely passing, Ada Prill took over the chair,  and recast the competition as the AAPE Youth Champion of Champions;  drawing Youth Grand Award winners from APS national shows.
  • Carol and Robert Barr are the current directors; an appointment that gives them a seat on the AAPE Board.

Dear Alyssah,

I have been in touch with the president of our sponsoring organization about the complications in the judging at Ameristamp Expo 2009 … (edited : confidential portion of the message) … We hope that this will never happen again and the above recommendation will be a solution to this problem reoccurring in the future.  Because of the uniqueness of this situation and the fact that the Grand Award winner will not be able to exhibit at this year's Champion of Champions competition, we would like to extend an invitation for you to represent Ameristamp Expo in her stead.  This is not what is usually done, but we feel that in this case we are willing to make an exception and look forward to your willingness to compete at NTSS this year in Dayton.  The invitation/registration will be sent as an e-mail attachment in the near future.

Sincerely,

Carol Barr

Dear Alyssah,

Well done and that is a good result.   I hope you are pleased with the outcome.   Keep up the good work and lets now aim for a large Vermeil in the near future.   Also great that you were awarded a thematic award as well.

Did you receive any feedback on what you now need to do to improve the collection to move it up to the next level?

Take care and all the very best,

Nigel

Congratulations on your results.   I am sure you must be happy about winning the AAPE Youth Grand & First Place Award.   It is appropriate you achieved this award in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee year.   This is a wonderful culmination of the years of effort building the QE2 exhibit.

Kind Regards,

Richard Breckon
