Philatelist Gold for 12 year old

A young Filipina made history at the recent international stamp show in Australia.

Alyssah Xeniah C. Alcala of Sacred Heart College, Lucena City won the prestigious Gold and Special Prize at State Level of this years edition of the Canberra Stampshow.

This show was part of the 14th National Philatelic Convention and it was held at the Hellenic Club, Matilda Street, Woden, Canberra, Australia. It was a modified National Exhibition organized by the Philatelic Society of Canberra Inc., with State-level classes under the auspices of the ACT Philatelic Council Inc. and National-level classes under the auspices of the Australian Philatelic Federation Ltd. The exhibition was comprised of 81 exhibits totalling 344 frames of great material.

The bulk of the exhibitors came from Australia, there were 6 exhibitors from New Zealand, one from Germany, and Alyssah was the representative from the Philippines.

The Canberra Stampshow was the first international exhibition of the two-frame philatelic exhibit of Alyssah entitled Her Majesty QUEEN ELIZABETH II. The exhibit featured the illustrious life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II using postage stamps and other related philatelic materials issued by various issuing entities from around the world.

In the 20 year history of the Canberra Stampshow, Alyssah was the very first Filipino to join the exhibition, the youngest exhibitor ever to join at 12 years old and one of the first two exhibitors ever to receive a Gold Medal for the youth category.

You make us all proud Alyssah, and your are indeed a role model for the Filipino youth. Congratulations !

It was a great feat for PCSC member Alyssah Xeniah C. Alcala (4301-0625-0488) of Sacred Heart College,  Lucena City,  Philippines to win the Gold and Special Prize at the State Level of the recent Canberra Stampshow 2006.  This show was the 14th National Philatelic Convention and it was held at the Hellenic Club,  Matilda Street, Woden,  Canberra,  Australia.   It was a modified National Exhibition organized by the Philatelic Society of Canberra Inc.,  with State-level classes under the auspices of the ACT Philatelic Council Inc.  and National-level classes under the auspices of the Australian Philatelic Federation Ltd.

The exhibition was comprised of 81 exhibits totaling 344 frames of great materials.  Alyssah was the youngest philatelic exhibitor in the show.  The bulk of the exhibitors were Australians.   There were 6 exhibitors from New Zealand,  one (1) from Germany,  and Alyssah was the lone exhibitor from the Philippines.

The Canberra Stampshow was the first international exhibition of the two-frame philatelic exhibit of Alyssah entitled "Her Majesty QUEEN ELIZABETH II."   The exhibit features the illustrious life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II using postage stamps and other related philatelic materials issued by various issuing entities from around the world.   In  the 20 years of the Stampshow,  Alyssah  was the first Filipino and youngest entry in the event.   She is one of only two recipients of the Youth Gold Award in the Stampshow’s history.   Alyssah's  participation in this exhibition was made possible through the help of many philatelists and donors.  In particular, her exhibit was sponsored by Congressman Proceso J. Alcala and Mr. Michael Dodd of cddstamps (Australia).

In the local scene her exhibit has already won the top prizes in GUMACAPEX 2005,  1st LUCBANPEX,  and  SULAT AT SELYO : 3rd San Pablo City Philatelic Exhibition.

Hopefully her exhibit will also reap more awards on August 18 - 20 in the forthcoming Adelaide Stampex in Australia.

At present,  Alyssah is also a member of Quezon Philatelic Club,   the APO Philatelic Society,  Inc. (Manila),  Cebu Philatelic Society,  and the web-based Stamporama.

Dear Alyssah,

Last night I spoke to Peter Leitch and others involved with Melbourne Stampshow 09 exhibits.  I confirmed that I will pay the return postage cost (as an insured Parcel) on your QE 2 exhibit, should your application be accepted.  I think it is likely you will be successful,  now that I have confirmed the return arrangements.  They are still processing exhibit applications and it could be a little while yet before the final choice is made.  At this point you will be advised and also you will learn of the the other Youth exhibitors in Stampshow.

Philatelic Society of Canberra hold its 16th Biennial National Convention, better known as Canberra Stampshow 2010.   It was held from 12 to 14 March at the Hellenic Club in Woden, ACT.   This has been the venue for the last four exhibitions and has proven to be a very popular venue with dealers, exhibitors, and visitors to the exhibition.

The main theme of the exhibition was the 100th Anniversary of Powered Flight in Australia.   This was undertaken by the great magician Harry Houdini in a Voisin biplane at Diggers Rest on 18 March 1910.   Whilst there is some disagreement about whether anyone actually flew an aeroplane in Australia earlier than this,  it is generally agreed that this was the first controlled powered flight in Australia.   The other main theme of the exhibition will be the100th anniversary of the Girl Guides in Australia.   We all hope that this anniversary will be as popular as the 100th anniversary of Scouting in 2008.   Canberra Stampshow 2010 is a Half National Exhibition organized by the Philatelic Society of Canberra Inc.,  with National-level classes under the auspices of the Australian Philatelic Federation Ltd (APF) and State-level classes under the auspices of the ACT Philatelic Council Inc.   National Level Competitive Classes comprise : Traditional, Postal Stationery, Aerophilately, Astrophilately, Revenues,Maximaphily, Thematics, Youth Philately and Philatelic Literature.
