Some of the stalls display their prices and you wouldn't normally expect to bargain at these, but if there are no prices, then it's time for a bit of pazarlik! Start your counter-offer at one third of the initial asking price, and aim to pay two thirds. But don't take it too seriously - the main guideline is, if you think the price you're paying is reasonable for what you're buying, then it is reasonable! Likewise, if you're genuinely unhappy with the seller's lowest selling price, don't buy.

And finally, in the busier markets, always keep a tight grip on your valuables, and in Yenihisar market in particular, check that what's in your shopping bag is actually what you picked out before you pay your money - some of the "ten for a tenner" stalls have a little scam going and once you've walked away you'll find it hard to get any "discrepancies" ironed out.

Altinkum Culture, History & Nature

Here in Altinkum there are ancient sites and natural wonders right on your doorstep!

Altinkum Beach and its clear turquoise sea are perfect for families & -beach lovers - the sandy beach and shallow waters, plenty of cafes for lunch &
refreshments. There are many other beaches here too - Second and Third Beaches are the best known but there are plenty of others tucked away in
little coves, some best reached by boat or by private car.

The Temple of Apollo is an amazing historical site (once the biggest temple in the Greek Empire, now a dramatic ruin) and you can get there easily by
bus - entrance just 2 lira per person. Further afield, Priene and Miletos were once thriving towns (Miletos a port although now kilometres inland) and are remarkable for history buffs. A private car or organised tour is your best way to visit, as with world-famous Ephesus, near Kusadasi.

Nature-lovers will appreciate Bafa Lake with its spectacular scenery (also home to another ancient site, Herakleia) and Dilek / Davutlar National
Park. Once again these are best by car or organised tour.

World-famous Bodrum, summer playground for Turkey’s elite, is worth a look - it offers historic Bodrum Castle + the fascinating Museum of
Underwater Archeology, the remains of the original Mausoleum (built as a giant tomb for King Mausolus), a yacht marina and plenty of classy shops
and discos! Bus, ferry or organised tour.

Also not to be missed are a Turkish Night, with traditional food, music and dancing - belly dancing and folk dancing are both amazing - and a Turkish
Bath or Hamam. Turkish nights are often run by hotels and restaurants, while Turkish Baths can be found throughout Altinkum - also both can be
organised by a good tour company.

Altinkum Post Offices

There are two post offices in Altinkum. They're called Postane (poh-stah-neh) in Turkish and they're marked by signs saying PTT. You can post letters, postcards and parcels, pay your electric bills, buy international phone cards and many other useful things there.

There is one post office down at Altinkum Harbour, on the little street running up between Paradise Restaurant and Romeo's, directly opposite Yasmin restaurant. The other is up towards Yenihisar, just off the main road before Migros - look for Seray Mobilya which also happens to do reasonably-priced furniture.

If that seems like too much effort and you only have a few postcards to send, the Fuji shop at the front of Didyma shopping centre at the Altinkum beach end of the main road will also take in your post. They charge a small surcharge, and only handle postcards.

Postcards to the UK are 80 ykr from the post office and 1 lira from the Fuji store.

Altinkum Supermarkets

Not necessarily exciting, but always useful. The supermarkets here in Altinkum tend to offer a wide range of products, take credit cards as payment, and some even accept payment in foreign currencies, which is handy! They all tend to be on the expensive side but prices are clearly labelled so they're an easy option if you don't fancy bargaining in the market! They are listed in alphabetical order and I've given them a rating for the range of stock, and for price. Carrefour and Migros also offer online shopping, although for the moment, only in Turkish, and in Carrefour's case, only in selected areas. I've included links to their websites next to their listing on the site. Carrefour, Migros and also Tansas have loyalty cards for their customers as well, and you can use the one for Migros in Sok as well, which is their budget outlet.

Actually, the company that owns Migros and Sok also owns Tansas, and the company that owns Carrefour has just bought Migros, so the bigger Turkish supermarkets are one big happy family now. Hopefully that'll mean they pool their resources to offer cheaper prices to their customers, rather than enjoying their monopoly and raising them!
