West Sussex Paranormal Investigations

Wymering Manor 15/1/05

History:

Wymering manor house began its historical journey as being listed in the doomsday book in 1086 when it was then owned by William Maldwith. It is a grand house and back then it had sufficient land stretching around 300 acres and land in nearby cosham and portchester also belonged to the manor house.

The Manor currently stands to be privately owned for almost a 1000 years until it was leased from Portsmouth council by the youth hostel association in 1960 and today remains.

At present the Wymering manor is a youth hostel managed and occupied by Mr David Scanlan and his family, David Scanlan is founder and chief investigator of the Hampshire ghost club which was founded at Wymering manor in November 2001 with its first investigation.

For myself and the rest of C.O.T.C. this investigation was virgin territory, after everyone had arrived the group of 17 was split in two. Stuart led our group and Charles led the other.

We started our investigation on the ground floor in Room 4 (while the other group headed upstairs), this room was very cold and you couldn’t help but feel as though you were being watched. It was quite a long room partitioned into 3 sections each section had bunk beds. At the far end by the windows both Helen and Sandy (sensitives)  felt headaches when they sat in a particular chair, Stuart and myself caught lots of orbs with our night vision cameras and most of us caught orbs with our digital cameras. EMF meters did pick up readings in this room but only small.

We moved the investigation into the Members Kitchen, this part of the house was once a Chapel and many noises have been heard in this room in the past. We all sat at the big table in the middle of the room and tried to make contact, sadly the only thing in this room to make us jump was Stuarts radio. After about 20 minutes we decided to make our way towards the Main Hall.

Many things have been seen in this hall from Half of a man reading a paper to a Group of nuns. It was here that I managed to capture one of the largest and brightest orbs I have ever photographed. (result!) The Video Clip's page has orb footage captured in the hall for you to download.

Both groups had a well earned tea break and then we headed upstairs. Our first port of call was to be one of the rooms that led out on to the balcony.

(rooms 2 & 3) Stuart caught lots of different orbs in this room but we didn’t get much else so we headed next door.

Again lots of orbs were caught but our Sensitive’s (Sandy & Helen) couldn’t pick up on anything so we moved on.

We made our way to Room 6, this room was supposed to house an angry ghost that likes to tip people out of bed (sadly he didn’t make an appearance while we were there) this room also has a Priest hole and Dave Volunteered to sit in it on his own with the door shut in the dark to try and trigger a reaction. The room had a strange smell, some thought it smelt like baby sick others though it was more fruity like sweets but no one was sucking any at the time or at any point during the evening. EMF readings were strong in this room by one of the beds and the temperature also dropped by the same bed. Most people thought this room had a heavy atmosphere.

This picture was taken in room 6, the orb seems to be on the move

Room 7 has a ghost of a lady that likes to sit in a chair no matter where the chair is put, the chair is not original to the house but then again how do we know that she is? She could easily of visited the manor at some point and liked it so much she came back. Sandy and Helen felt a strong presence in the far corner of the room and the EMF meter was reading at around 3.5 mg, lots of orbs were caught in this room and strange dots of light.

The Balcony was to be our last location for this part of the evening, with cameras in position and everybody sitting comfy Stuart suddenly felt someone or something jab his right knee. It was enough to cause him a small amount of pain and it was at this moment that I knew the Manor had more to offer than just orbs. I wasn’t sure what to make of Stuarts claim about the jab because he said himself that muscles can spasm giving the feeling of being poked, but not long after this Sandy felt something brush across her right cheek and I felt someone poke my shin and as we all know the shin is just skin and bone …no muscle. In the space of 5 minutes 3 of us had been touched by unseen forces, we also picked up tapping noises on the balcony. Also on the balcony during the night Stuart heard someone say "hello".

Something seems to have caught Simon's attention

Again both groups had a break and it appeared that Charles’s team had more success downstairs than us, Stacey managed to pick up some names and they also did a séance in room 4. This could account for the lack of action we had in most of the rooms upstairs, the séance in room 4 could have been drawing the energy away from the other parts of the house (just a theory). We then all decided to split into smaller groups I went with Stuart and Ian into room 7 where I had caught the “dots of light”, in this room Stacey had picked up the names Mary and Sarah-Jane so we called out for them and it looked like we didn’t get any response until I looked back on the video I shot in that room. It looked like orbs were appearing at the time of us asking for them but on the night I didn’t see them probably because I was looking elsewhere at the time, not realising that we had got a response we moved off into room 2. At the time it seemed very quiet on the upper levels and we later found out that all the action was concentrated on room 4, while we were up stairs Charles and Chris (www.UKSPI.co.uk ) saw a “shadowy figure” move from one side of the room to the other so we all made our way to room 4 for the last séance of the evening.

The séance claimed that their were 5 spirits present but they spoke as one, one of the spirits was welsh and they said that they were not ghosts because they were not dead. The spirits also claimed to be watching us and that they were playing, when Stuart asked where they were playing the séance ended and so did the nights investigation.

Summery:

Yes Wymering Manor is Haunted, it claims to have up to 22 ghosts but sadly only a few made them selves known to us. We hope to be returning to Wymering Manor for a follow up investigaton. If you are thinking of visiting Wymering Manor for a ghost hunt I highly recomend it.
