Pattie Boyd

Fabulous model and  Georges first wife.

Patricia Anne Boyd was born on March 17, 1945 in Somerset, England. In 1962, Pattie began her modeling career in London, along with her younger sister, Jenny. In 1964 Pattie was spotted By Richard Lester, who cast her in roles in commercials. As the Smith's crisps girl, she became pretty well known in London . Around this time, Lester got hired to work on the Beatles first film, A Hard Day's Night. He cast Pattie a small role in the film, a schoolgirl named Jean, where her only line is "Prisoners?!"

Pattie soon got the opportunity to ask for their autographs. When Pattie got to George, she asked for an autograph for herself and her sisters. As was his custom, he put three kisses on her sister's autographs, but put seven under Pattie's. She remembers, "I figured he must like me a little," . George was immediatly taken with her beauty and cutesy personality. He soon asked her out, but Pattie already had a boyfriend of 2 years, Eric Swayne, a 30-year-old photographer. George was persistant, and finally Pattie agreed to one date. When she told Eric she'd made a date with George, he gave her an ultimatum: give up the date or give up me. But Pattie couldn't resist the "quiet" Beatle, and she soon began developing strong feelings for George.

George's new girl was discovered by the press, on a vacation with John and Cynthia Lennon to Ireland. They vacationed again in '64 in Hawaii where they enjoyed a wondergul unspoiled vacation. Her rising fame landed her a job, in SIXTEEN MAGAZINE, writing a column.

One of patties columns :

april 1965

HI, DOLLIES!
Do you day-dream of becoming a famous model overnight? Do you wish a photographer would come up to you as you walk down the street and ask you to pose for Vogue? Oh, dear, I was the same as you once. But it just didn't happen that way. This is the true story of how I started, told for Teri Lowney of San Fransisco, Calif., and all the others who have written asking the same questions:

I wanted to be a model, but I just didn't know how, so I called up a friend at a big magazine. He said to come over to the office. The office was a great building in London full of long corridors, and it didn't take little Pattie long to get lost. There I was, looking at numbers on doors, when a stranger bumped into me.

"You a model?" he asked briefly. "Come in here. I can probably use you." Not the romantic approach I'd hoped for! Still, I earned my first fee that way, and he ended by giving me some good advice: "Get a good agent and go to one of the top modeling schools."

So that's the advice I'd pass on to all of you who dream of becoming models. Train at a school that has proved itself – not just one of these places that give you a paper diploma and nothing else – and don't try to sell yourself when you have qualified. Let your agent do that.

Audrey Lubert fo Chicago Ill., wants to know my height, weight and coloring. Well, I'm five feet seven inches tall, I weigh 105 pounds, have blue eyes and am what they call a pink and white blonde!

Debbie Wadleigh of Indianapolis, Ind., asks how tall you have to be to become a model. That's a difficult question, Debbie. You could model small teenage fashions and be no more than five feet tall, but for sophisticated clothes, a girl has to be five feet six inches at least.

Theresa Van Gilson of Silver Springs, MD., raises the old question of a model's diet. Well, there's only one real answer. A successful model has just got to be strict with herself and lay off all fattening foods. That means no bread, butter, spaghetti or sweets! Theresa doesn't say so in as many words, but I guess she must be about fourteen. Watch out for "puppy-fat spread," Theresa. Eat proper meals at regular times with lots of lean meat and green vegetables.

Theresa also asks me to recomment good English fashion magazines. Personally, I like Queen, but I suspect it's a bit too old for you. Honey would appeal to you more. The best fashion magazine in the world, for my money, is the French one, Elle.

So many of you, like Amber Durham of Rhode Island, ask me what England's like. What can I say? Just come and see it for yourself! Come toEngland in the Spring when everything is marvelously green. It's the greenest country in the world, I think. The charm of England is that the scenery changes so quickly. One moment you an be in country with pines and heather and silver birches, and the next you can be in rolling parkland. It would be a shame to come without seeing Scotland and Ireland and Wales as well. They're much more mountainous, but romantic in a wild sort of way.

Donna Brunner of McKees Rocks, Pa., asks: "Will you be coming to America?" You bet I will, if I get the chance! I've been asked to go many times, but it's a question of waiting till my commitments here let me get away.

Linda Lurger of Chrisman, Ill., wants to know all about my make-up. First of all, let's start with my hair. It took me about a year to grow it long. I style it myself by washing it, letting it get almost dry and then putting rollers in the ends. It's nice of so many of you to say you like my eye make-up. All I do is to use a brownish-black eye-linter, and take it out a little bit at the corners to make my eyes look bigger. I only wear eye make-up. I use nothing on my skin, and all I ever use on my lips is a little foundation cream. No lipstick! My favorite perfume is Jicky by Guerlain. It's got a lovely musty scent without being sweet.

Just time for a few more answers to your questions. Diane Collier of Metairie, La., is curious to know whether I'm going to be in the Beatles' next film. No, I'm not. I haven't been asked, but in any case I want to be a model, not an actress. I think you know how I feel. I don't want anyone to say: "Of course, they only put her in the film because she's George's friend." I'd hate that.

Mary Beth Fugilino of Wilmington, Del., asks whether I'm nervous and suffer from stage fright. No, Mary Beth, the only time I'm inclined to take fright is when I have to talk to people outside my age group and circle of friends who won't help me to make conversation! This is the oldest problem that we all have – making chat to strangers. But it's not hard, really. The great thing about getting boys interested in you is to make them think that you're interested in them. So ask them lots of questions about their school or college or home or hobbies, and you'll find yourself getting on like a house on fire! What was your other question, Mary Beth? Oh, yes, about my kitten "Wee-Wee." He is pure black without any markings.

The most pointed letter I've had – it was a sweet letter, too – came from Gloria Ambrose of Wickliffe, Ohio. She said: "I meant to write you a nasty letter because you like George, but after I thought about it, I saw that I couldn't keep you from liking George and George from liking you – "
Well, Gloria, I like you because you like George, and I'm glad you didn't write me that nasty letter. After all, people who do these things only make themselves unhappy in the end, and you don't sound at all like an unhappy person. Rather a nice person, in fact!

Love to all of you and thanks for all your letters. I've had hundreds – far too many to answer, I'm afraid, but in future columns I'll try to pick out the most popular points and deal with them. Ta!

In 1965 Pattie moved into Georges home in Esher, where the fans did not take to her as kindly as they had previously. George proposed to Pattie on Christmas day 1965, and they married in 1966, Janurary 21st. Paul McCartney was the only Beatle present, and Brian Epstien was best man. Thier honeymoon was in Barbados.

Pattie gave up her career in modeling.

In late 1964, LSD entered the lives of the Harrison's. Their first exposure to the drug was when George, Pattie, John Lennon and his wife Cynthia were invited to dinner by George's dentist. He slipped the drug into the 2 couples' tea, and didn't tell the what he had done until after they had finished. John became paranoid that the dentist was trying to get them all into some wild orgy or something, and they raced out of the house. By this time the acid was taking effect, and George could barely drive. But seeing the dentist following in a cab, they managed to get away, driving at about 15 m.p.h. The group remembers that Pattie kept repeating, "Let's get out and smash a window!"

With George always off touring and recording, and her modeling career gone, Pattie was left home alone much of the time. She and George had recently visited India, and they both loved the country. A friend encouraged Pattie to go hear the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi who was coming to lecture. She thought this was a great idea and encouraged George and the other Beatles to too. They all thought this was the answer to getting spiritual fulfillment. After his lecture they all decided to accompany him to his Rishikesh retreat in India. They were all having a great time and were all drug free – that is until it was learned that the Maharishi, who taught that illicit love was wrong, made a pass at Mia Farrow. The Beatles and the rest of the group were greatly disappointed, and they all went back to England, picking up their drug use once again. Their India experience had a great impact on George, who became absorbed in the culture, religion and music of the country. Pattie did not share the same feelings, and the slow end of their marriage began.

On March 12, 1969 – Paul and Linda's wedding day – the Harrison's were busted for posession. On this day Pattie was out shopping, and when she arrived back at her car she found a pack of cigarettes on the windshield. Inside was a note and a package containing some hash. She put it in her purse and went home. Later that day, Norman Pilcher – notorious for busting rock stars on drug charges – arrived at the Harrison's when Pattie was home alone. He was strapped with a warrant to search the place for drugs. Pattie was terrified because of the hashish she'd taken home, and called George to ask what to do. George told her not to give them an arguement and to just tell them where it was and give it to them, which she did. The Harrison's were taken to jail but released on bail. They plead guilty of possession of illegal substances. Pattie believed that the hash must have been purposely planted on her, and ironically two years later, Sergeant Pilcher was be charged and convicted for planting illegal drugs on famous stars.

The Harrison's marriage was getting rockier as the years went on. Drugs and George's newfound Eastern religion weedged an ever-growing gap between them. George was also having constant affairs with the "Apple Scruffs," fans that lingered outside the Abbey Road studios. (In 1970 George would dedicate a song to them, "Apple Scruffs", on his album All Things Must Pass.) Pattie was aware of her husband's infidelities, but she remained faithful for a long time. Finally, she grew so angry, she decided to make a pass at George's best friend, Eric Clapton. This didn't last long, however, as Pattie was so deeply in love with George. This little affair ended up causing another problem for Pattie: Eric had fallen madly in love with her. His infamous song "Layla" was written for her, but she could not leave George. Clapton became severly depressed and went into seclusion, almost killing himself with a herion addiction.

George and Pattie's marriage was increasingly deteriorating. One night the couple went to the Starr's home, and George drunkenly confessed that he had a crush on Ringo's wife Maureen, and proposed to Ringo that they swap wives for the evening. Pattie locked herself in the bathroom, crying inconsolably. Later George and Maureen did have a fling. Their marriage on a downward spiral, Pattie began doing what she wanted to do, regardless of her husband's wishes. She picked up her modeling career again, and even had a brief affair with Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones.

In 1972, George and Pattie got into a terrible car accident, which almost proved fatal for Pattie. She suffered a concussion and several broken ribs. She spent many weeks in the hospital and many more in rehab.

In 1973, the Harrison's decided to split. Ironically, the very night George decided to try and patch things up once more, it was too late – Pattie was off with Eric in Los Angeles. Eric finally got his "Layla," and the two were married years later on March 27, 1979 in Tuscon, Arizona. Guests included Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Denny and JoJo Laine, Mick Jagger, Elton John, David Bowie, and even George and his new wife, Olivia Arias. The ceremony was conducted completely in Spanish.

Derek finally got his Layla

Pattie's fairytale marriage to Eric would soon go sour as well. The same old housewife routine was repeating itself with Eric, and Pattie became depressed. Her began drinking often, and her alcoholism worsened when Eric's extramarital affairs became more and more apparent. He had two children with other women, which is what ultimately drove the two apart. Pattie was unable to have children, a fact that devestated her. By 1985, she had had enough.

Something
(George Harrison)
Lead Vocal: George Harrison

Something in the way she moves
Attracts me like no other lover
Something in the way she woos me

I don't want to leave her now
You know I believe her now

Somewhere in her smile she knows
That I don't need no other lover
Something in her style that shows me

Don't want to leave her now
You know I believe her now

You're asking me will my love grow
I don't know, I don't know
You stick around now it may show
I don't know, I don't know

Something in the way she knows
And all I have to do is think of her
Something in the things she shows me

Don't want to leave her now
You know I believe her now

Eric-Clapton's Lyrics - Wonderful Tonight Lyrics

(by eric clapton)

It’s late in the evening
She’s wondering what clothes to wear
She puts on her make up
And brushes her long blonde hair
And then she asks me
Do I look alright
And I say yes, you look wonderful tonight

We go a party
And everyone turns to see
This beautiful lady
That’s walking around with me
And then she asks me
Do you feel alright
And I say yes, I feel wonderful tonight

I feel wonderful
Because I see the love light in your eyes
And the wonder of it all
Is that you just don’t realize
How much I love you

It’s time to go home now
And I’ve got an aching head
So I give her the car keys
She helps me to bed
And then I tell her
As I turn out the light
I say my darling, you were wonderful tonight

Oh my darling, you were wonderful tonight

Eric-Clapton's Lyrics - Layla Lyrics

(by eric clapton and jim gordon)

What’ll you do when you get lonely
No one waiting by your side?
You’ve been running and hiding much too long.
You know it’s just your foolish pride.

Layla, you’ve got me on my knees.
Layla, I’m begging, darling please.
Layla, darling won’t you ease my worried mind.

I tried to give you consolation
When your old man had let you down.
Like a fool, I fell in love with you,
Turned my whole world upside down.

Chorus

Let’s make the best of the situation
Before I finally go insane.
Please don’t say we’ll never find a way
And tell me all my love’s in vain.

Chorus
