Nan's Review:

By now I’ve listened to All the Lost Souls more than 20 times. You never get tired of it. It’s very short though…38 minutes. But in those 8 minutes James voice takes you on a wild ride. You start out in 1973 at a club with some girl. Very upbeat and happy and then you slow it down some for a slow sweet song called “One of the Brightest Stars” which is a very touching song indeed. Then up a notch for the fun song “I’ll Take Everything” until you reach the best song on the album. “Same Mistake” is a sure hit about love and mistakes which is the core of the album. After hearing the slow song you are left in awe for a new song about a troubled girl who wants to leave the life she has. After that mood swing, you are followed by the hilarious Elton John influenced “Give Me Some Love” and then to the haunting “I Really Want You.” After you experience the Beatle-Esqe “Shine On” and then the fun song “Annie.” And to finish it off, “I Can’t Hear The Music” which is an odd song, but you can’t stop listening to it. The album could be classified as “The Beatles” with the rock ‘n’ roll guitars, haunting vocals and different sounds. James once again does not disappoint with his second album and is an album that you will put in for car trips, cleaning the house, and for those romantic dates!

I just got this in CD version so that I could have it on my iPod and play it in my car. (I know that I am late getting it)

I love the 70's feel of this album. It has a wonderfully cool grove. I love the spin they put on the songs that I have already heard. The best part of the album is that it does not have that bubble gum pop song that we hear so much of these days.

It’s a really mellow album. One that you can imagine blunting with; p

I feel that it’s very different than "Back to Bedlam" but it has the common thread of touching people on an emotional level. The words can touch me but the actual composition of the music touches me too.

James I am really proud of you! I feel like I can connect to you mind in these songs :)

When I first heard ATLS, I thought it was "ok". Songs that I have loved for the past 2 years that made it on the album, suddenly sounded flat, and unemotional. Then I heard the album live, and realized it was way deeper emotionally, then B2B. Although the emotions sound forced on the album, it’s not the case to see it live. It did take me a few days to feel it, but I love ATLS.

Now, when I first heard All the Lost Souls, I thought Mmmmm this feels and sounds like it was rushed, as though James was in Pacha in Ibiza again after many nights in there when he should have been at home tinkering away on the ivories coming up with the same amount of amount we adore on Back to Bedlam. Unlike how I felt when I first heard BTB which was WOW! and I couldn’t get enough of all the songs . This time round I found myself thinking Mmmmm this All the Lost Souls is in no way comparable to BTB at all. I was more impressed with Dear Katie the B side of 1973. But now I have played it everyday for the past two weeks I have come to love it ,the only song I flick past is I really want you . It just doesn’t click with me. So for me ALl the Lost Souls has come to grow on my ,unlike James magical in your face wonder of brilliance BTB. I have to hear this album live so I'll be seeing James on January 14th Hammersmith Apollo.

Does anyone agree that with most things the first is amazing but the 2nd just doesnt really come close? This always seemed to be the case in my experience anyway, until i hears ATLS! Theres something about this album that just makes you stop and want to listen again and again. B2B was a superb album for breaking James into the music industry but in my opinion ATLS says a lot more about James' musical talent and style. The songs on this album seem to evoke common feelings and emotions in everyone who listens to it. James said he wanted to write an album about life, i think the success of this is shown by how many people feel they can really relate to the songs on the album. After going to a few of the early gigs before James hit America id heard a couple of the songs and instantly fell in love, Same mistake was the first song to really get me hooked on James very raw in the early days but now its on the album it seems to of been turned into something so elegant yet still with the raw edge of passion i heard at my first gig. Carry you home silences my everyday thoughts and makes me think about who truly matters to me, Shine on is just beautiful and and Give me some love is just the catchiest foot tapping song on the album! ATLS is a perfect follow on from B2B and I cant wait to stand with others who appreciate good music when the Tour starts in January!
