Pottstown parents first to have triplets at Paoli Hospital

PAOLI -- Ten-month-old Christian Eckstein donned the proper attire on Monday afternoon for his first visit to room 249 at Paoli Hospital since his mother checked in last week.
The blue-eyed baby wore a navy shirt with white lettering that read, "Big brother of triplets."
Christians mother, Bonnie Eckstein, 26, of Pottstown, gave birth to three boys on Friday, as she and the boys father, Michael Eckstein, 28, became the parents of the first set of triplets to be born at Paoli Hospital. Michael Eckstein said Christian was happy to meet his new siblings. "The first thing he did was smile, and his eyes were real big," Michael Eckstein said as he sat next to Bonnie on the hospital room bed with the three newborns, Alexander Vaile, Benjamin August and Caleb Joseph, resting side by side in front of them. "And then he tried to grab them, of course." Bonnie Eckstein gave birth to Alexander (5 pounds, 2 ounces) at 7:51 a.m. on Friday, followed by Benjamin (4 pounds, 10 ounces) and Caleb (4 pounds, 10 ounces) at 7:52 a.m. She said the couple had no family history of multiple births on either side, and she gave birth to her three sons without using fertility drugs. "It's been both exciting and shocking," Bonnie Eckstein said. "We're just really grateful of the hospital staff. Everyone's been very helpful to make it the special experience that it was." Dr. Stephen Krell, of Main Line OB/GYN, delivered the triplets by C-section and said they were born without complications at 35 weeks and six days. "What's amazing is that the mother conceived triplets without fertility drugs, and natural triplets only occur once in every 8,000 births," Krell said in a statement. "It's just a beautiful thing to see Mother Nature at her best." Bonnie Eckstein said she and Michael were first told in October that Bonnie was carrying twins. About four weeks later, however, a doctor asked Bonnie how many babies she was expecting. When Bonnie answered, "Two," the doctor surprised Bonnie by adding one more. "I remember it was Nov. 4," Bonnie Eckstein said. "I called Michael and I said, 'Are you sitting down?" But even with the parenting task of raising four boys less than one year in age apart, Michael Eckstein said he and Bonnie have been in "baby mode" since Christian was born 10 months ago. "Obviously, it's going to be a handful," he said. "But in a way, because they're so close in age, I think it's going to be a little easier. They'll get to grow up together." Bonnie Eckstein said she and Michael sifted through tons of names before the births, coming up with Alexander, Benjamin, Caleb and Nicholas as their favorites. Eventually, the couple realized the boys could be named in alphabetical order as they were born. Alexander was first, followed by Benjamin, then Caleb. "We realized we could do the A-B-C naming," Bonnie Eckstein said, "And Alexander and Benjamin are twins, so they have that in common, and Caleb and Christian have 'C' names, so it worked out very well." On Monday, Michael's parents, Linda and Al Eckstein, and Bonnie's mother, Susan Smith, took turns holding the new babies. The grandparents are all from northern New Jersey and have been in town since the middle of last week. "The mothers are real attached," Al Eckstein joked. "They think they're their babies." "We said, 'Now, there's a baby for everyone,'" Smith added. "There should be no fighting for their attention." Bonnie Eckstein said the newborns will head home to Pottstown today, and the couple will use a nail-polish system to tell the boys apart for the time being. Alexander wears red nail polish on his toes, Benjamin wears blue and Caleb wears black. Paoli Hospital said Dr. Garo Megerian, of Women's Health Group, and Dr. Dawn Zopotok, of Upper Providence Pediatrics, would be assisting the Eckstein family. On Monday, the proud parents said they had always hoped to have a set of boy and girl twins and have a total of three children. Bonnie's mother joked that the parents sort of got what they wanted. "Well, you got three at once," Smith said. "Now you just need one more and you've got a basketball team."
