Proposed Changes in Regulations Affecting  Bowfishers, Commercial Fishermen, and Gar Anglers in General

ALERT! for TEXAS 07/10/04:  Fellow gar fishermen, there is a petition online now in progress to change the Status of Alligator Gar in Texas to "Game Fish Status" on a website @

http://www.petitiononline.com/texasgar/petition.html

Please read this petition. It will stop fishing for Alligator Gar in the state of Texas as we know it, if allowed to go unchecked.

I have created a petition to keep Alligator Gar status as it is in Texas, please goto it @

http://www.petitiononline.com/AG062904/petition.html

and sign this petition if you who fish Texas wish to continue to fish as is. Please copy the url and send it to all the persons who are interested in continuing to fish for any species of "rough fish". They start with the Alligator Gar, WHATS NEXT, CARP, BUFFALO, TILAPIA, GASPERGOO, OR WHAT? You may contact me in regards to this petition @ elpescador3335@yahoo.com

Joedy, is it possible for me to acquire the information of exactly how many gar fishermen have permits in the State of Texas currently? If so please let me know how to gain this information. Thanks Again, WT Sanguinet

My records show that there are 41 current permits that allow the harvest of gar. I won't know how many of these actually do this until I receive their annual reports.

NOW SOME OTHER GROUPS ARE ACCUSING THE COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN OF "DEPLETING" THE NUMBER OF ALLIGATOR GAR IN TEXAS BY OVERFISHING THEM. THESE COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN HAVE TO BUY A GENERAL COMMERCIAL FISHING LICENSE, A COMMERCIAL BOAT LICENSE, AND A NON GAME FISH PERMIT IN ORDER TO FISH FOR ANY NON GAME FISH SPECIES. THEN THEY HAVE TO DEVELOP A VIABLE MARKET TO MARKET THEIR FISH. IN ADDITION TO THIS, THEY MUST FILE A ANNUAL REPORT OF ALL FISH {EVEN THEIR BAIT FISH} TO THE STATE.

I SUGGEST THAT IT IS NOT THESE LEGAL COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN BUT THE "RIVER-RATS" WHO ARE CAUSING THE RIFF. THEY DO NOT BUY THE LICENSES AT ALL. THEY DO NOT FILE REPORTS AT ALL. THEY DO NOT MARKET THEIR FISH @ THE RETAIL OR WHOLESALE LEVEL BUT SELL THEM TO FRIENDS, NEIGHBORS, AND OTHERS WHO THEY ACQUIRE BY WORD OF MOUTH, ie "HEY OLD JOE BLOW SELLS GAR FOR $.50 per #." "HE JUST DOES IT AS A PASTIME."

THESE ARE THE ONES WHO YOU SEE TAKING LARGE NUMBERS OF AG's ON WEEKENDS. MOST COMMERCIAL GUYS DON'T EVEN FISH ON THE WEEKENDS BECAUSE OF THE TRAFFIC ON THE WATER.

DO YOU REALLY THINK THESE "OUTLAWS" WILL STOP BECAUSE THE REGULATIONS ARE CHANGED ON COMMECIALIZED FISHING OF AG's? NO THEY MARKET TO INDIVIDUALS AND ARE NOT GOING TO STOP BECAUSE THEY HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE AND EVERYTHING TO GAIN. IF THE REG's. CHANGE TO STOP COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN FROM TAKING AG's THEN THE "OUTLAWS" CAN GET MORE FOR THEIR PRODUCT AND WILL TAKE EVEN MORE GAR THAN THEY ARE NOW. IT's SIMPLE ARITHMETIC, SUPPLY DROPS PRICES SOAR!

THINK ABOUT IT GUYS,

THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS POST, WT AKA ELPESCADOR

Gar FAQs

1] How can you tell male from female gar without harming the fish?

As far as I know for sure, there is not a non-destructive way to discern between male and female, from the exterior appearance. I usually watch when I bring them on the boat for 'tell-tale" sign such as egg release. When a female is getting ready to spawn, and is stressed, she 'may' release a few eggs when pressure is exerted on the belly. Also I watch to see if the belly is distended. I am very sure that because of distended bellies, I have probably released many large well fed males, thinking they may have been females full of eggs. Oh well! I would rather release a few males than take a chance on killing a female getting ready to spawn. Not fool proof methods for sure but at least I do try. by Elpescador
