I Am 1 of 3

I am confined by space and time,
But when I dream, I’m out of my mind.
Out of my body my soul drifts away,
As it came to find one day, an old sailor at bay.
Seeing me in my spiritual state he screamed and shouted,
As I came closer he curled in fear as he pouted.
He finally thought to ask, “Who are you?”
After a second of thought I answered him thoroughly,
“I am 1 of 3.”
You should have seen the stunned look on his face.
His eyes full of confusion as he considered the words that echoed in the place.
“1 of 3? Could it be?
Are there others that I will see?”
The man shriveled at just the thought.
I laughed at him and replied, “Of course not!”
“For goodness sake’s!” the man exclaimed.
“Then what is your name?”
“I’ve told you!” I said leaning against a tree.
“I am 1 of 3.”
The sky was dark and hazy,
As a seagull was flying lazy.
The old man stood as rigid as could be.
I wondered at the fact that he could have misunderstood me.
His wrinkly face and stiff old body,
Magnified the details of his shoes made of shoddy.
He stared into my soul.
I felt as if he was looking through a hole.
Then as if he couldn’t find what he was looking for,
He asked, “How are you 1 of 3? Could you be 1 of 4?”
“No!” I screamed, “Listen to me!”
“I am 1 of 3.”
As my rage began to build I realized I had begun to change.
I started to shout and swing my arms, luckily the man was out of range.
My voice was now as deep as the sea,
And the man became as terrified as can be.
I yelled at the man, “Now look what you’ve done!”
“I’m now yet a different 1!”
“A 1 of pain, a 1 of hate,
A 1 of all-fearing state!
All-terrifying power and greed. Can’t you see who I can be?”
“I am 1 of 3.”
The old man now completely petrified replied,
“Yes, yes now I see you are 1 of 3,
Just please don’t hurt poor old me!”
Filled with guilt I began to calm down.
“Forgive me old man, please remove that frown.
For you see I can be any 1 of 3.
That one you witnessed was the devil.
I hope that you know now that I’m on the level.
For now you can understand me.”
“I am 1 of 3.”
The man now settling began to question me.
“Well, if you can be normal and also of hate, what is you’re other 1 of 3?”
Joy then filled my heart with song.
I realized that this 1 I am not usually for very long.
Laughter exploded from my lips.
My soul then began to do flips.
“This is the best one of all,
When like this I can hardly fall.
Come and join me in cheerful dance.
I have escaped the devil’s trance!
This is how I wish people to know me.”
“I am 1 of 3.”
“Old man I can be filled with hope or with pain.
I can be troubled or sane.
The reason I say I am 1 of 3,
Is that at anytime I could be a different me.”
The old sailor now held me in favor.
Yet his decision seemed to waver.
“There is one thing I don’t understand.”
The old man said with a question on hand.
“Why show me all this to tell me who you are?
When you could have given me a name, and not gone so far.”
“A name,” I replied in a feverish manner,
“Describes who we are just like a banner.
So when you asked me I told you so very clearly.”
“I am 1 of 3.”
