Ok these are the questions you should ask yourself before purchasing a ferret..
Do you have a minimum of 4hrs a day to play with your ferret?
Are you a very patient person?
Can at anytime your ferret is out of there cage stop what you are doing to stop them from getting into places they should not be?
Can you set aside atleast a thousand dollars for vet costs?
Now these are just basic questions to ask your self. If you answered no to any of these a ferret is Not right for you. These are just the beginning.
When purchasing a ferret be prepared for
accidents-even the best litterbox trained ferret will have them.
scratching- Ferrets love to dig. Carpets are alot of fun for them to dig at. Expect corners of your carpet getting ripped up. I personally use heavy floor mats to cover the 2 areas my furrkid loves to dig at.
Exploring- ferrets love to explore and they can get themselves in very small areas so be prepared to have to safety proof your home. Be prepared having to block off areas you can barely get in to protect your fuzzy from getting in.
Stealing- Ferrets pick and choose what they want to play with. So be prepared for socks disappearing, keys, jewlery and lots more. My ferret loves to hide everything he choses to play with.
kiss the days of just closing your doors, dryers, washers, stoves, and leaving toilet seats open good-bye. You have to ALWAYS check these things first to make sure your ferret is not in there. Toilets well quite a few ferrets have gotten into toilets and in the pipes.
Always on your toes! A ferret will always keep you on your toes If you cant handle a very active curious animal then a ferret is not right for you.
Expect having the bottoms of your beds and couches being ripped open so your ferret can play. Expect not ever being able to sit down without having to crawl underneath these to try to find him/her.
Expect a long day at work coming home and wanting to lay down and watch tv being interrupted by your ferret who patiently waited all day for you to come home to play, remember they dont understand you had a long day, they just want to be with you.
You need to learn basic care. Trimming nails, giving bathes, cleaning out there ears.
Then there are the basic supplements you are going to need to purchase to keep your ferret healthy and happy.
Dont forget the food bills. You cant just feed your ferret a bag of cat food from the dollar store. Ferrets require certain things in their diet such as crude fat and crude protein which should be a higher percentage and then they also require that no more then 3% of crude fiber be in their daily diet. So pretty much expect paying 15-20 dollars for a healthy bag of food for your ferret.
If you can handle all of this then welcome to the world of owning a ferret! Once you have your little fuzzy you will realize that there is nothing in the world you wouldnt do for them. The love, kisses, and hrs of fun they give you are worth more then anything!
