In the spring of 1951, a welcoming committee composed of twenty hostesses was appointed by Mrs. Harold Stemsrud, President of the Alexandria Community Council. These hostesses called upon more than one hundred newcomers to Alexandria to acquaint them with the many organizations, schools and churches of their new town. Mrs. Russell Anderson became chairwoman of the group, followed by Mrs. Ronald Rice.

A year later, gave a reception for these newcomers of the various governmental bodies and organization. This committee developed into the formation of the Newcomers Club of Alexandria through the work of Mrs. Stemsrud, Mrs. Rice, Mrs. Donald Krueger and Mrs. Charles Taylor.

John McCarten drew up the constitution and the By-Laws of the Newcomers Club in 1952 and Mrs. Donald Krueger was the first President. Officers served for a term of six months and members can be active no longer than three years. The average membership was around seventy.

Currently, the Alexandria Area Newcomers meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at Nelson Gables at 7:00 pm with around 100 members. Friendships are our number one mission with special programs, door prizes, and many special interest groups.
