Documents of knowledge, containers of lore.
|
Here is my contribution to the fascinating and most interesting world of knowledge. Here, you will find some documents that were written by me and many general-reference documents that might be of interest to some of you.
In order to open some these files, you will need WinZip, which you can obtain FREE OF CHARGE from here. Some of those files are in .pdf form, so you will also need to download Adobe Acrobat Reader, which you may download, once again FREE OF CHARGE from here. Some other documents are in .doc or .ppt format, requiring Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint, respectively. For those who don't have Microsoft Office, you may download a Word viewer from here and a PowerPoint viewer from here.
For starters, take a look at the documents below:

Below you may find a collection of 39 fonts that allow you to read and write Greek Polytonic texts. My personal choice: Gentium and Palatino Linotype! To report an inactive link, or to submit a new non-commercial font, just e-mail me at katoomba@cytanet.com.cy.
Some more (8-bit) greek polytonic fonts are available for downloading from here, here, here, here and here. Some beautiful fonts are available for purchase by Magenta and Aviette (Avisoft-Mastersoft). Magenta's polytonic fonts are available in four packets for the price of € 34,63 each. You may see Pack 2 (16 fonts), Pack 3 (22 fonts), Pack 4 (11 fonts) and Pack 5 (24 fonts) on the web (Pack 1 is monotonic). There is another pack, which is worth € 73,36, and contains greek mono- and polytonic 8-bit fonts. Aviette, on the other hand, offers four packs, Volume 4 of the ex-MasterSoft fonts (€ 70, with 58 polytonic fonts), and three brand-new packs, with 82+ fonts each, worth € 56 each. There is a 20% discount for academics and students.
Greek Polytonic Unicode fonts can be used to read and write greek polytonic texts under Windows 9x/ME, Windows 2000/XP and Windows 2003 and MS-Office 97/2000/XP/2003. In order to VIEW (READ) greek polytonic texts, you must only have the corresponding fonts installed (Windows 2000/XP and 2003 comes with Palatino Linotype and Office 2000/XP and 2003 comes with Arial Unicode MS). However, in order to PRODUCE (WRITE) greek polytonic texts, you must use a greek polytonic keyboard layout. Windows 2000/XP and 2003 comes with such a layout, while Windows NT 4.0 users can download it from here.
If, by any chance, you happen to use Windows 9x/ME, things get a little more... perplexed: Because these Windows versions DO NOT use Unicode internally, they cannot input greek Unicode text globally (Windows-wide), only locally (applications-wide), in applications such as MS-Word (versions 97 and later), with the use of a keyboard layout, such as Accentuator (Πολυτονιστής) for Word 97, Word 2000 or Word 2002 (XP) or MultiKey for Windows 3.1, Word 95 and Word 97/2000/2002, Antioch 1.13b for Word 97/2000/2002.
