Slash/Sex

So, slash (same-sex pairings) isn't everyone's cup of tea. That's understandable. But about 60% of my fics include it at some point even as just a subplot or background, so what can you expect from me?

For a start, I don't do lemons or smut. Nuh-uh. If my fic is rated M then it's normally for something like abuse or another not-meant-for-kids topic. The highest rating for sex would be a T. That goes for all ships, not just slash. I have a rather picky taste when it comes to romance and you can trust me to write it tastefully. Of course, the opinion on what "tasteful" means varies, but as I said above I don't go for graphic or even non-graphic sex scenes. I admit I have included rape in plots before but always have it off-screen and never in detail. Although sex does happen in my fics, more in some than others (depending on the plot), I don't normally have the actual scene - if I do then it's more implied than detailed - normally it would just be the scene after or leading up to it. I also usually have sex as a plot device rather than just for the sake of it. I will never write incest closer than cousins, though a couple of planned fics include characters who are siblings in canon turning out to be adopted or something and in a relationship ... but those two fics are more of an experiment for me to see if I could write the pairing, because I like to experiment with different ships.

Back to the actual slash. The vast majority of the time it would be Harry/Ron but the other ships that have appeared are Severus/Sirius and Hermione/Susan Bones. Some others (off the top of my head) that will creep in over time posting will include Sirius/Remus, Harry/Draco, Pomona Sprout/Stella Sinistra and Albus/Alastor. I normally keep to the ships where the characters are at least friends in canon but not always. When I write something like Harry/Draco I build up the relationship slowly and realistically rather than just throwing them together suddenly like some authors. The Albus/Alastor ship is for the most part one-sided and not a huge plot point of the fic in question.

As my OTP is Albus/Minerva then I almost never write a ship that contradicts it unless it's a past or one-sided ship, so if a fic has only one ship then it tends to be that one. However, I do many multi-ship fics and Harry/Ron is my second favourite ship, so slash will often come into my fics at some point (I estimate about 60% of them). As Harry tends to be under 16 in most of my fics then obviously the slash will be pretty mild anyway because of that. I do however have a slight obsession with mpreg so I like to use that in sequels quite a bit.

Examples

From: The Unspeakable
Ship: Ron/Harry

Harry was still trembling. Ron pulled off his cloak and wrapped it around him, then for the sake of it added his arm. Harry leaned into his shoulder, one hand curling around the cloak.

“It’s okay,” Ron murmured pointlessly, knowing that they both knew it wasn’t okay. But what else was he supposed to say?

Harry moaned softly and Ron moved, hugging him properly. He could feel Harry’s face was still wet and his thin shoulders were still shaking. He stroked the black mess of hair gently and before he knew what he was doing, planted a small kiss on Harry’s head.

For a moment Harry froze, and Ron’s insides iced over. Had he finally gone to far? Then to his utter amazement, Harry’s face relaxed, almost smiling and he nestled closer.

Pleasantly shocked, Ron tried again, the kiss lingering a little longer this time. He felt rather than saw Harry’s smile and his heart soared. Harry was smiling!

He drew back slowly to look Harry directly in the eyes, and he knew he wasn’t mistaken: in the bright green orbs was written permission.

This time, the kiss was on the lips, and lasted a lot longer.

From: Stars
Ship: Hermione/Susan

Couldn’t you sleep?”

She shook her head in response and lay down next to her. “I keep worrying about my friends.”

Both girls sighed. Susan’s hand twitched above her head, winding a strand of Hermione’s hair around her finger.

“Try not to worry, Mynee,” she said softly.

Hermione turned and laid her head on Susan’s shoulder. “It’s hard.”

“I know.”

For a few moments both girls were silent. They simply lay on the only slightly damp grass, watching the sky, enjoying each other’s company.

Hermione pointed. “A shooting star.”

Susan smiled. “Make a wish.” She watched as Hermione closed her eyes, a dreamy expression spreading over her face. “What did you wish for?”

“If I told you that, Su, it wouldn’t come true,” Hermione said playfully, not opening her eyes. Instead she snuggled further into the girl next to her, who wrapped her arms around her, and closed her own eyes.

Abuse

OK, this could be referring to either child or spousal abuse, as I've been known to write both at some point or other. I try not to go OTT. I do understand and respect the fact that this is a sensitive subject and should be treated with caution. Hiding the subject away and not talking about it is not the right thing to do - writing about it helps increase awareness of what some real-life children and adults go through, and the subject comes up more and more in modern literature.

I have two stories (off the top of my head) which, although the parts aren't posted yet, feature spousal abuse. Neither have any on-screen and in one the story is set years after the event.

With child abuse, it's more common in my stories. Normally it's the Dursleys (usually Vernon) with Harry as the victim. The severity depends on what type of abuse it is. Emotional abuse is in a way worse than physical abuse, which is normally what a fic contains if it bears that warning. However, in the case of Harry and the Dursleys, most readers and even JKR don't seem to think of it as emotional abuse and don't bother with a high rating, because anyone reading fanfiction would be used to it. I use the strategy that if it's in the books and I don't get any complaints, a K+ rating will do - any higher or more in depth then I go for at least a T if not M.

Examples

From: About a Kitten: Prelude

Malachi grabbed me by the shoulders and shook me vigorously. “Don’t you ever speak to me like that again, do you hear? Never!

I nodded, shaking like mad. He was still for a minute, and then he suddenly hit me across the face, throwing me backwards into the table. I yelled as I hit my head hard, and when I fell to the floor I landed in the shattered glass.

“Get this cleared up,” he whispered. “I don’t care how long it takes, just get it all off the floor. Now.” With that, he stormed out of the kitchen, locking me in. I crouched on the floor, my arms over my face, sobbing madly into them ... For the next week or so, we kept stepping in tiny fragments, too small for me to see in that light. Every time my father found one he pinched my arm, digging his nails into the skin.

Self-Injury

Again, this is a sensitive subject, but unlike abuse, the awareness is pitiful. It's much more common than some people would think but the vast majority of people have no idea of the truth behind it. It's not a sign of madness, nor suicide. In fact, for most it's a way of coping with life rather than wanting to end it. It's a subject I feel very strongly about, having some experience in the area, and I always try to approach the matter in a careful way.

The examples I have in fanfiction are more extreme than in my experience, but the emotions and concept is the same. Normally I would use the other characters to show just how wrongly people interpret the subject. Although I haven't got that far yet, in Foundations of Glass I intend to have Harry think of it in all the wrong ways before a professional psychologist explains the matter to him.

If I have self-injury in a fic I always, always rate it M.
