Will there be a PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4? Interview with producer Jerry Bruckheimer

Sheila Roberts of moviesonline.com caught up with PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently, and she seized the moment to ask if, due to the phenomenal success of DEAD MAN'S CHEST, there were plans to extend the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow beyond the third installment, AT WORLD'S END. Here's what Ms. Roberts asked Mr. Bruckheimer:

SR: What have you seen in the poster for PIRATES 3 that's got you really excited?

JB: We have Chow Yung-Fat which is really interesting and exciting. It's a thrill to be able to work with him. There's always new stuff. We've got an ending that's amazing. It's really a nice ride and it's still filming.

SR: Is Keith Richards in it?

JB: He's in it. We finished him. He's filmed. He's got a small little cameo.

SR: Is his head okay now?

JB: Apparently. [Laughter] He was great to be with. He didn't want to leave. He was having the best time.

SR: Is there going to be a PIRATES 4?

JB: I hope so. I hope so if we could come up with a good story. I think we have a big jump on a story that we're going to do.

SR: When I interviewed you for the second one, you said, 'Oh, we don't know yet.' With the latest one doing so well, it seems there may be a fourth one coming out?

JB: Yeah, we hope so. We hope so.

Visit the Flying Dutchman at Castaway Cay

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN fans who would like a close-up look at the Flying Dutchman, the ghostly ship captained by Davy Jones in DEAD MAN'S CHEST, can now have that opportunity by visiting Castaway Cay, the Disney Cruise Line's private Caribbean island. The Flying Dutchman, with its ragged sails and barnacle-encrusted bow, is now anchored off Castaway Cay. No doubt the Dutchman will be showing up as a scenic backdrop in many tourist photographs from now on. "The PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movie franchise is extremely popular," said Disney Cruise Line president Tom McAlpin, with charming understatement. "Having the Flying Dutchman ship at Castaway Cay is something truly unique that only Disney Cruise Line could offer guests." Perhaps some day the Black Pearl will also make berth at Castaway Cay--that's a photo op we'd love to have.

"There will be blood, and music . . . and pies"--Tim Burton discusses SWEENEY TODD with ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY reporter Whitney Pastorek conducted a candid and hilarious interview with director Tim Burton; called "CHRISTMAS Cheers," its main focus is the release of the new 3-D version of Burton's classic THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, but it also probes his feelings about other Batman films and makes inquiries about the upcoming musical film of SWEENEY TODD.

Here's what Tim has to say about his next project with Johnny Depp:

EW: Anything you can share with us about your version of SWEENEY TODD [in which Johnny Depp will star as the demon barber of Fleet Street]?
TB: No. Because, you know, once I decide, being a mere puny human, there's a whole alien intelligence out there that knows so much more than I.

EW: That is not true.
TB: [Laughs] Unfortunately, it is. [. . .]

EW: There will or there will not be singing?
TB: Oh, yeah, there will be. There will be blood, and music . . . and pies. For everyone.

EW: Do you foresee a time when you and Johnny Depp will be sick to death of each other?
TB: [Laughs] No. I've been through enough with him, and he's pretty open to things, and that's the exciting thing about working with him.

EW: I guess the good thing about him is you don't so much have to pick projects with him in mind as much as just know that he can be whatever you need.
TB: I think when we work together we try to do it when it feels new or feels right, and hopefully those projects will always be there somewhere.

EW: Thanks. Good luck with everything. Try not to feel too puny.
TB:It's just, you know, the alien forces are stronger than you think.

BREAKING NEWS--PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END set to film at Guadalupe Dunes on a closed set

Ahoy, mateys--the cast and crew of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END are about to hit the road again. The location site for filming this time will be the gloriously beautiful Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve, a protected area on the California coast near Santa Barbara. According to several Santa Barbara television stations, filming will take place on the Dunes from Wednesday, October 18th through Sunday, October 22nd. In case you were planning a field trip to the area, however, please note that the Dunes will be CLOSED to the public at this time. We wouldn't want anyone to trek down there, hoping to get a peek at Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, and be disappointed.

Carina Corral of television station KSBY reports that the cast is "under heavy guard" and that the Dunes will be "off-limits to the public" beginning on Wednesday. Guadalupe Dunes Preserve Manager Willie Richerson told KSBY, "They're basically taking over our whole parking area and utilizing some of the dunes and the beach." But preservation of the delicate Dunes habitats is being carefully monitored. Production vehicles will be kept on a path at slow speeds to ensure that the endangered bird species, such as the snowy plover, aren't disturbed by the film crew.

"We were very clear that they weren't to damage any vegetation or impact any of the park's resources," Richerson told KSBY. The production company made a donation "in the amount of tens of thousands of dollars" to rent the park for a few days of shooting, and that money will be used for maintenance, upkeep and restoration projects on the Dunes. Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve will be closed starting tomorrow, through Saturday. The park may re-open on Sunday if shooting finishes early.

Terry Gilliam talks about Johnny Depp and DON QUIXOTE again--this time to MTV

Director Terry Gilliam, on the circuit promoting his new film TIDELAND, sat down for a very entertaining interview with MTV's Larry Carroll. In an article called "Terry Gilliam On Depp, 'POTTER' And The Film He Panhandled To Promote," Terry talks at length about the current movie industry and the difficulty of getting studio and financial support for projects that are, shall we say, a bit outside the mainstream. He also addresses comparisons between himself and Orson Welles (who also longed to make a film about Don Quixote and could not get the necessary backing) and comments on Hollywood's tendency to ignore their maverick artists throughout their careers and then belatedly present them with "Lifetime Achievement Awards" after 40 years of neglect. Terry Gilliam is, as always, funny and candid. Here is the exchange about the possibility of reviving THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE:

MTV: The documentary LOST IN LA MANCHA (2002) showed you battling executives, sickly actors, and having general bad luck while ultimately failing to get your passion project made. Will you ever be able to finish THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE?

Gilliam: We're getting very close to getting the rights to QUIXOTE back.

MTV: And Johnny Depp will still star in it?

Gilliam: Well, I'm not sure if I want to work with him--he's just too big a star now. I'd rather work with a young unknown. [He laughs.] No, that will be the first phone call I make when I get the script back in my hands ... then, when he's free, we go because he's on board.

Geoffrey Rush discusses PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END

Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush, aka Captain Hector Barbossa of the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN trilogy, gave a wide-ranging interview to reporter Claire Sutherland of the Melbourne Herald Sun, in which he discused his present work on the third POTC movie, AT WORLD'S END. "We're sort of filming the grand finale of the great trilogy where 12 plots all converge on one massive, almost mythological, action sequence," Rush said. "It's quite extraordinary and bigger than BEN-HUR. The scene we're shooting is a global pirate summit." No more plot details were forthcoming, though: "I can't say much because (producer) Jerry Bruckheimer might kill me."

Mr. Rush offered his own take on Keith Richards' appearance in AT WORLD'S END. "The man I met on set was a very playful, excitable kid," he explained. "[T]his completely eccentric character turns up and plays by totally different rules to the slightly more manicured actors who turn up, so that was very, very thrilling." He added, "He's the only person in the whole trilogy of films who can put Jack Sparrow in his place, and anyone who can put Johnny Depp in his place is a pretty cool guy."

BREAKING NEWS-Johnny to get married!!!

LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Johnny Depp is getting married.

The 'Pirates of the Caribbean' actor is set to marry his French lover Vanessa Pa
radis in a small ceremony at their home in the South of France next summer.

A source revealed to Britain's Daily Express newspaper: "Johnny and Vanessa are planning to finally get married next summer at their villa. It will be a private event rather than a showbiz extravaganza."

The couple have been together for eight years and have two children, Lily-Rose, seven, and four-year-old Jack. The family split their time between Los Angeles and France.

This is not the first time Johnny has been involved in wedding plans - he was engaged to actress
Winona Ryer and Jennifer Grey and briefly married to musician Lori Anne Allison in 1983.

For many years Johnny was reluctant to marry again, insisting: "If you are together and you love each other and are good to each other, for all intents and purposes you are married."

Vanessa, who had a worldwide hit with 'Joe le Taxi' when she was just 14, recently revealed how special their relationship is.

She said: "Johnny is all I dreamed of. No one could love the way we love. He's a beautiful person so obviously he's a beautiful dad."

"Remember Dusty's words," Johnny Depp tells the Children's Hospital gala: "Today is a gift. Have fun."

Johnny Depp was in the spotlight Saturday night, receiving the "Courage to Care" award from the Los Angeles Children's Hospital, but he used his moments at the podium to direct attention away from himself and back to the seriously ill children whom the evening was meant to help. Johnny was introduced by a beaming Jennifer Lopez, who said, "The bracelet on Johnny's wrist [the Children's Hospice bracelet] is an expression of his devotion to all children. Johnny's kindness and generosity behind the scenes, making children a priority, are why he is one of tonight's award recipients. His films are inspirational for children all over the world. Johnny Depp is a role model for all of us."

Johnny then came to the podium, thanked Jennifer, and said: "First to say that I am humbled by this award, I am so thankful and so touched. But I want to . . . I want to salute you people for your generosity, and I want to applaud you [he pauses to applaud] and you . . . Giselle [Giselle Fernadez-Ferrand, the organizer of the benefit] .. salute you, and the doctors and the nurses and all the people who bring these kids around, you know. And lastly to the kids--you know, the courage that I have seen in the eyes of these little ones, that you don't see anywhere else, is astonishing and inspiring, so . . . [with a gesture of acknowledgement] to the little ones, to the babies . . . [he applauds again] - you know. And thank you all."

Johnny concluded his speech by reminding his audience of the words of Dusty, the words engraved on his Children's Hospice bracelet. "Remember those words, you know, Dusty's words: I do, every day. 'Today is a gift. Have fun.' Just have fun."

Terry Gilliam hopes to resurrect THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE, starring Johnny Depp

Director Terry Gilliam is beloved by genre fans for films like Brazil, 12 Monkeys, and Time Bandits, but his pictures are often - and famously - plagued by production troubles. Never was that more true than with his doomed The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, the film that notoriously never came to be but the troubled and incomplete production of which was portrayed in the popular 2002 documentary Lost in La Mancha. Now, however, Gilliam says that he is on the verge of resurrecting the long thought dead project.

"We're in the final stages of getting the rights to Quixote back," the director told IGN earlier today. "I mean, I've been hearing this for the past six months, and I'm getting a bit impatient. But when we get that back, that would be the thing I would just dive in [on]. First thing I would do is make one phone call: 'Johnny, when are you available?' And that would dictate when I do it."

The Johnny in question is, of course, Johnny Depp, the planned star of the first version of Quixote. Gilliam says that the actor is still onboard the film. "He's on, he's on," the director said, before adding with a laugh, "He's the man… I hope he's still my best friend!"

As for how much of the original version of Quixote can be used for this new production, the helmer believes that there's little chance of actual footage being recycled from that shoot.

"We have to start anew," Gilliam confirmed. "We have to throw it all away. We do have things like costumes stored away. There's some work that's been done, but everything we shot is gone. It's such a dangerous thing, because the documentary was so good and people have got so many images in their own head of what the film will be like. Their imagination may be better than what I produce, so who knows."

BREAKING NEWS--new photos of Johnny Depp arriving at the Children's Hospital Noche de Ninos Gala

The photo at left shows Johnny Depp as he arrived at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Saturday evening, October 7th, to receive the "Courage to Care" award from the Los Angeles Children's Hospital at their second Noche de Ninos Gala. "Johnny Depp embodies the very spirit of the 'Courage to Care' Award," says Giselle Fernandez-Farrand, who created the Noche de Ninos Gala. "He puts smiles on the faces of thousands of children through his great work on film, and his longtime private advocacy of children and children's charities is nothing short of inspirational."

Congratulations to Johnny--it is such a pleasure to see your tireless advocacy for children recognized by your community.

In a related story, the Studio is rumored to be moving ahead with plans for the fourth, fifth and sixth installments in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" saga. Our source tells us that some actors are being offered contracts for the next three films, which have not yet been announced through official channels.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END filming gets underway in Palmdale

After some delays, filming of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END has begun at Site 9, the former aircraft production hangar in Palmdale, California. Extras who work on Davy Jones's ship, the Flying Dutchman, have been called to film on Friday, September 29th, as well as Monday and Tuesday of next week. Dharma_bum reports that a new casting call for AT WORLD'S END extras has been issued for the end of October; the agency is looking for "extremely thin men with long hair and beards and women with pale skin and natural hair color." Security at the Palmdale set is reported to be as tight as it was at the Burbank studios, which means visitors will not be able to get anywhere near the set or see the cast members.

Producer Graham King comments on Peter Weir's departure from SHANTARAM

In an interview with Geoffrey Macnab for SCREEN DAILY (U.K.), Initial Entertainment Group's Graham King addressed the delay on his film of Gregory David Roberts' SHANTARAM. Mr. King and Johnny Depp are producing the film for Warner Bros.; Johnny is slated to play the leading role, and production was originally supposed to begin when PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 3 wrapped this fall. Now those dates have been pushed back several months due to the departure of director Peter Weir.

Graham King acknowledged that he and his producing partners have not yet found a replacement for Mr. Weir. "We're talking to a few directors right now," King told SCREEN DAILY. "It's very unfortunate about Peter. He's truly one of the best filmmakers that there is," King said. "He just had a vision of the movie which wasn't mine and Johnny's." King added that when SHANTARAM does begin filming, he hopes to bring the project to a studio in the U.K.--perhaps Leavesden.

Johnny Depp's Falmouth freedom refused

LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Johnny Depp has requested the freedom of British seaside town Falmouth - and been refused.

Representatives for the 'Pirates of the CaribbeanView the profile for Johnny Depp on Celebrity Spotlight' star - who plays Captain Jack Sparrow in the Disney films - approached the council of the small Cornish town and asked if they would bestow the honour upon the Hollywood star.

But Falmouth town council member Mike Varney told local newspaper The Falmouth Packet: "I welcome the association with the film but that's as far as it should go. I do not like the idea of the council selling its soul just for publicity.

"There are many other people who are residents of Falmouth who are more deserving of such an honour and we don't want to impinge on the positions of freeman and honorary freeman of the town that already exist."

If Depp was granted the ancient traditional honour his rights wwould have included parking his horse-and-cart outside the Town Hall and driving his sheep through the town on market days.

Falmouth council have instead decided to grant 43-year-old Depp a lesser honour, such as 'honorary friend' of the town, or offering him the keys to the town.

Mayor Roger Bonney said: "This could be really great for Falmouth and could really help put us on the map and bring more visitors."

Talk PR approached Falmouth on behalf of Johnny Depp because it was the home of Britain's first woman pirate Lady Mary Killigrew and has other strong piratical links.

The company did approach other seaside towns in Cornwall.

A report from the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END set in Palmdale

Dharma_bum continues her reports from the various sites of the filming of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END. Her contact who investigated Site 9, the airplane hangar at Palmdale where AT WORLD'S END filming is supposed to be taking place, found security on the site and a few cars in the parking lots, but none of the hustle and bustle that indicates filming is underway. "It looked like a film site being prepped," the observer wrote. And don't expect the Palmdale site to be another Redondo Beach, where visitors could get access to Johnny Depp; the road leading onto Site 9 has security and is posted with No Trespassing signs. "Site 9 has two large hangars and two smaller buildings in front of them. The entire site is gated and fenced and guarded," dharma's contact reports. "One of the guards had a full guard outfit including a gun. The doors to one of the hangars was partially open but you could not see in at all. The doors open sideways away from the parking lot. . . . There is no way to get close at all." We thank dharma_bum and her reporter for the update--they probably saved some Depp fans a long and frustrating trip. You can read the full account on the Porch, on the thread called "AWE Filming Moves to Palmdale."

Intriguing rumor--maybe Mike Newell to direct SHANTARAM?

Since there has been very little hard news about SHANTARAM since Australian director Peter Weir left the project in June, we thought we'd pass along a report from author Gregory David Roberts. Roberts told an audience at the Mantua Literature Festival that Mike Newell is among the directors under consideration to helm SHANTARAM. Newell, the director of DONNIE BRASCO, has proven himself adept with complex stories, exotic milieus, and large ensembles, and he never permits the characters to be smothered by the special effects. No matter how colorful the background, Mike Newell's movies are always about people. He might have just the right touch to direct a sprawling saga like SHANTARAM.

Gregory David Roberts also told his Mantua audience that Johnny Depp is "perfect" for the role of Lin. He also praised Johnny's humility: "Johnny is a special man, he doesn't put on airs like the majority of those who are involved in the Hollywood Star system." Roberts said that SHANTARAM would begin filming next autumn.

Great News! Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End will open WORLDWIDE on May 25th

Mark your calendars: May 25, 2007 will be Captain Jack Sparrow day around the world, as PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END opens simultaneously in all markets. This is a vastly different strategy from that used with DEAD MAN'S CHEST, which featured staggered openings throughout the summer. "We're going to open on the weekend of May 25 in every country around the world," Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group president Mark Zoradi told Screen Daily. "It will be our widest release ever," Zoradi added, "and it will be the first time that our company has done a literal day-and-date release."

We think that's a wise decision: nobody wants to wait a moment longer than absolutely necessary to see the conclusion of the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN trilogy. Bring on Captain Jack!

Johnny Depp The Next Indiana Jones?

Johnny Depp will star in an adaptation of "Rex Mundi", a series of graphic novels by Arvid Nelson and Eric Johnson.

Rex Mundi, translated "King Of The World" is set in alternate reality of the year 1933 where the world is dominated by the catholic church much as it was during the Inquisition.

Depp will star as an Indiana Jones-ish character uncovering mystery and adventure set in a film noir backdrop. The film will be adapted by Jim Uhls whos other credits include "Fight Club".

Johnny Depp Not in I Am Legend

It was reported in July that "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise star Johnny Depp would be joining Will Smith in director Francis Lawrence's I Am Legend. IESB.net now says that's not true:

Remember the casting news that Johnny Depp had been cast in I Am Legend? According to our "on-set" source this rumor is pure BS, Depp never signed on and bottom line, he is not in the film...

The IESB can confirm that the Phillip character is not in this script and that this movie will actually be closer to The Omega Man film than the original 1954 novel written by Richard Matheson.

DEAD MAN'S CHEST reclaims #1 spot in overseas box office

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST reclaimed the #1 position on the international box office charts this weekend, thanks to a record-breaking opening in Italy, where it earned a sensational $12.8 million . . . or about double the opening box office for THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL. DEAD MAN'S CHEST has been #1 overseas for 10 of the past 11 weeks and has earned $612.5 million in total overseas boxoffice.

Captain Jack Sparrow's second adventure now ranks fifth in a group of only six films ever to have earned more than $600 million in overseas admissions, and its distributor, Buena Vista International, believes that DEAD MAN'S CHEST will surpass the #4 film, HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS, with an international gross of $614.7 million, by next weekend. The total box office for DEAD MAN'S CHEST now stands at $1.03 billion.

Here's some good news for the patient Italian fans, who endured an 11-week wait for DEAD MAN'S CHEST to open in their homeland; there will be no waiting for AT WORLD'S END, which is scheduled to open worldwide on the weekend of May 25, 2007.

The secret world of Johnny Depp

Actor Johnny Depp enjoyed wearing women's clothing during the filming of Ed Wood, in which he played a real life, cross-dressing movie director.

According to pagesix.com, in his upcoming biography The Secret World of Johnny Depp author Nigel Goodall says that Depp, like Wood, liked angora sweaters when he was young.

Goodall quotes Depp as saying, "I love angora sweaters. Oh man, they're unbelievable. They really feel good. This girl I dated when I was a teenager, she had an angora sweater. When we broke up, I was upset, but not about her. It was the sweater."

Depp's love for angora sweaters peaked when Burton asked him to play Wood and began walking around as a woman to get into character. Burton was concerned initially but Depp did a great job and pulled it off.

Wood begs Richards to play Depp's pirate dad

London, Sep 17 (IANS) Rolling Stones star Ronnie Wood is so keen to see bandmate Keith Richards in costume as Johnny Depp's pirate dad in the second 'Pirates of the Caribbean' sequel that he is begging him to turn up for rehearsals in full costume.

According to contactmusic.com, Wood is too impatient to see him in screen.

'They're filming as we speak, and he's gonna come to the next rehearsal in Boston dressed in his pirate gear,' says Wood.

He is glad about Richards' role as the pirate dad but is not too happy with the accessories.

Keith Richards sets sail as Depp's pirate dad

Keith Richard is set to sail onto the world's cinema screens next Spring as Johnny Depp's dad.

The third film in the Pirates of the Caribbean saga is due to be released next May.

And Keith Richards - the model for Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow - will be playing his father.

Richards, who recently escaped death after falling out of a tree in Fiji, has been filming a cameo for Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End.

He flew out to Hollywood after finishing the Rolling Stones European tour.

Fellow band member Ronnie Wood said Richards had been "hard at work on the set with Johnny Depp.

"He said he's gonna come to the next rehearsal in character - he's gonna come straight off set dressed as a pirate, and come to rehearsals." Wood said that clean shaven Richards was undergoing a bit of a change for the role: "He said to me: 'I'm not allowed to shave from now on, so they're gonna tie little bits on my beard. Whatever bits grow, they're gonna dangle bits off of it, and the longer it gets, the more they're gonna tie on'."

"He promised to take a Polaroid as I'm dying to see it!," said Wood.

Depp has told how he modelled his flamboyant character, Captain Jack Sparrow, on Richards, a personal friend.

In an interview he said: "I thought of Keith because he's a guy I've admired for many, many years. I didn't want to do an imitation of Keith, or a character study, just a kind of salute to him, you know, to show him I appreciate him.

"I was thinking about the pirates of the 18th century, about how they were the rocks stars of their day.

"So I thought who's the greatest rock and roll star who ever lived? And to me, it's Keith Richards hands down. Keith is a bit of a pirate himself."

Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom have also returned to Los Angeles to shoot some of the studio scenes.

The second movie in the series, "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," has become the third film to pass $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office.

Disney announced that the new Pirates of the Caribbean will be released globally on May 25th next year, rather than gradually around the world.

Mark Zoradi, president of the Disney Motion Pictures Group said: "All we need to do is get the trailer out there, put together a good campaign and I think the audience is going to be with us."

But it may not be the last Pirates film. "The third film... will conclude the initial Pirates trilogy, though it is unlikely to be the last Pirates sequel."

Richards filmed his performance before The Stones began US tour dates this week.

BREAKING NEWS--Johnny Depp to receive the "Courage to Care" Award from Childrens Hospital Los Angeles

Childrens Hospital Los Angeles has just announced that it will honor Johnny Depp with the "Courage to Care" award for philanthropic excellence on behalf of children. The award will be presented at the 2nd annual Noche de Ninos Gala on October 7th, "a star-studded, multicultural celebration honoring individuals who make a difference in the lives of children around the world." Joining Johnny as this year's "Courage to Care" recipients will be Ralph Alvarez of McDonald's Corporation and philanthropists Debbie and Mark Attanasio.

The Noche de Ninos Gala is a fundraising event for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, an international leader in pediatrics which specializes in treating the most critically ill and injured children, using cutting-edge medical care. The inaugural gala in 2004 honored Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and Leonardo DiCaprio, and raised more than two million dollars for the hospital. Ms. Lopez will return to this year's gala, to be held on Saturday evening October 7th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, to present Johnny Depp with his award.

The event is open to the public, but only those with deep pockets can attend, as a single ticket costs $1,000. For more information see the Zone's News & Views forum. Information about ticket availability can be obtained from Levy, Pazanti & Associates at (310) 201-5033.

"Johnny Depp embodies the very spirit of the 'Courage to Care' Award," says Giselle Fernandez-Farrand, who created the Noche de Ninos Gala. "He puts smiles on the faces of thousands of children through his great work on film, and his longtime private advocacy of children and children's charities is nothing short of inspirational." We heartily agree. Congratulations, Johnny!

Johnny Depp to appear in video for Johnny Cash song, "God's Gonna Cut You Down"

Johnny Depp has appeared in several music videos during his career, and will be adding a new credit to his resume soon. Acclaimed video director Tony Kaye, whose most recent award-winning effort is "Dani California" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has been given the rather daunting task of directing the videos for the late Johnny Cash's final CD. For "God's Gonna Cut You Down," Cash's song about the Grim Reaper, Kaye has filmed a Who's Who of current pop culture; in addition to Johnny Depp, we'll see Keith Richards, Owen Wilson, Bono, Kanye West, Jay Z, Justin Timberlake, Kate Moss, Chris Rock, and Trevor Howard, among many others, taking turns mouthing Cash's lyrics over his signature gritty vocals.

The Word from Disney...

Okay, not directly from Disney... more like from Disney through their marketing company... but the word is that these photos are NOT -- repeat NOT -- from the upcoming "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels.

You will NOT see this in the second OR third POTC movie.  They've assured me it just won't happen.  We should trust them on this.

I got the e-mail as part of a mass mailing to various Johnny Depp and POTC web sites who apparently all have these pics posted for the third movie.  In it, they say --

"I can now confirm for you that the images are not from the second or third film and that there have been no scenes filmed with Jack in Asian Togs. If you could help me by clarifying this on your sites and in your forums and removing them from your static content, it would be very helpful.  As you can imagine, we are concerned about the images causing confusion but also being picked up wider by other sites as actual stills from the film."

Okaaaaayyyy...  so if they're not from the third film, what exactly are they?  Well, of course I asked!  LOL!  This is the answer I received this morning:

"Thanks Trish - we're all a bit stumped about what exactly they are.  Many online (and some here) believe that they are photoshopped images."

I'm sorry, but those are not photoshopped images.  The third one is especially telling, because his Jack wig hair is entwined in some of the Asian costume.  Much too intricate for photoshop.  So, IF they're real but NOT from one of the films, what does that leave?

My personal belief is that they are screen test shots -- pictures taken to test what something will look like on film.  I've got some on the site from "Benny & Joon", and the facial expressions and poses are similar.

But that's just me.  If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong.  It wouldn't be the first time.

But for now, I can tell you definitively -- *waves to the corporate lawyers* -- they are NOT from the second or third POTC films.  On that, you have their word.

Sweeney Todd to begin filming February 5th, 2007

The upcoming Tim Burton film version of Stephen Sondheim's musical Sweeney Todd starring Johnny Depp in the title role will begin filming Feb. 5 at London's Pinewood Studios, according to a Hollywood Reporter report.

Shortly after DreamWorks Studios confirmed plans for the film, the trade publication revealed Feb. 5, 2007, as the startdate for lensing at London's Pinewood Studios. Also added to the project were costume designer Colleen Atwood ("Memoirs of a Geisha") and cinematographer Dante Spinotti ("L.A. Confidential").

Pinewood Studios is no stranger to the musical film having served as the home of the recent screen take on The Phantom of the Opera and previously to Little Shop of Horrors and Victor/Victoria movies. Burton also has a history with the complex in which he filmed "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "The Planet of the Apes" and "Batman."

John Logan ("The Aviator," "Gladiator") penned the screenplay adaptation planned to begin work in for a "late 2007 release," according to the announcement. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will partner with Richard Zanuck and John Logan to produce the co-production with Warner Bros. Paramount will distribute for DreamWorks domestically and Warner Bros. internationally.

Sweeney Todd follows the story of a wrongfully imprisoned barber in Victorian England who sets out to seek revenge on the judge who imprisoned him. The stage work featuring a score by Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler based on the play by Christopher Bond.

The original 1979 Broadway production starred Len Cariou as the barbarous barber with Angela Lansbury as his pie-making cohort in the Harold Prince-directed work. Both stars and the musical itself earned Tony Awards. In the current Broadway run, re-imagined by director John Doyle and starring Michael Cerveris and Patti LuPone, the actors play their own instruments. Other incarnations of the work include a 1989 Broadway revival featuring Bob Gunton and Beth Fowler, a Kennedy Center run as part of a Sondheim Celebration with Brian Stokes Mitchell and Christine Baranski as well as a 2001 concert presentation, directed by Lonny Price and led by George Hearn and LuPone.

The film will reunite Depp with Burton once again — the duo have previously worked together on "Edward Scissorhands," "Ed Wood," "Sleepy Hollow," "Corpse Bride" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Johnny Depp eyes up Welsh home

COULD Hollywood's favourite pirate be about to drop anchor in Wales?

Johnny Depp, aka Captain Jack Sparrow, is rumoured to be swapping the high seas for a land-lubbing holiday home in the sleepy market town of Crickhowell.

Industry insiders claim the handsome heart-throb fell in love with the breathtaking countryside of the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park when he stayed in the area while filming bodice-ripping period romp The Libertine in 2004.

And now the Pirates of The Caribbean star, who back then set the local female population's hearts aflutter in his role as notorious 17th Century womaniser The Earl of Rochester, looks set to cause palpitations should he splash out on any of the treasure trove of lavish properties up for sale.

Revealing how the Academy Award-nominee's people are researching the housing market for him, one source told Wales on Sunday: "Johnny had a great time when he was in Wales and loved the scenery and sense of history of the place.

"He likes the pace of life there and enjoys the anonymity living somewhere like that would afford him."

Mayor of Crickhowell Geoff Powell can't wait to be the first to welcome the superstar, who famously quit the bright lights of LA and moved full-time to rural France several years ago after meeting his gorgeous partner, French singer/actress Vanessa Paradis.

The couple now have two young children, daughter Lily-Rose and son John.

"I'm all for rural regeneration and new money can only be a good thing for the countryside," he said.

"We've had a lot of people coming to this neck of the woods - ex-financial traders and the like - doing up converted barns to live in and eventually starting up their own businesses down here and creating a lot of extra local jobs.

"I'm sure that if Johnny Depp moves here he'll be taking on some staff; gardeners, cleaners and builders to keep all that cash flowing around.

"He's a well-respected actor and so it seems, a very private guy, so I'm not worried about him bringing the wrong crowd here."

Joan Roberts, director of JDR Estates in Hereford who handle properties throughout the area, said someone like Depp would fit right into his new surroundings.

"It's chocolate-box country round there and that, along with the remoteness of area, is what's appealing to him. They're very low-key people these stars, which makes that particular housing market very desirable indeed.

"I doubt many of the people who live in these villages would even know Johnny Depp had moved there if they hadn't read about it in the paper first.

"I mean, you only really know the Queen's at home if the flag is flying, don't you?"

But not everyone is convinced.

James Suter, who co-owns the nearby Gliffaes Country House Hotel where Depp was reported to have stayed while previously filming in Wales, said: "I wouldn't mind so much if he was going to live here the whole year round, but I doubt he'd be around for much more than one month out of 12."

Mr Suter, who also sits on the National Park Committee where the problem of lack of affordable housing is a regular topic of debate, added: "From east of Bwlch to Abergavenny, trying to find a place has become all but impossible for most - the last thing we want is another big house going unoccupied for most of the time.

"I'd much rather it went to a local. Besides the type of people that level of celebrity attract aren't the sort we want around here.

"We want tourists to come and enjoy the splendour of our national park, not just drive around looking for an old converted barn that some film star has moved into."

Drum roll please . . . PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST earns $1 billion worldwide!

Captain Jack Sparrow and his movie crewmates have now earned more than $1 billion at the box office this summer, placing PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST in very exclusive company. Only two other films in history have ever earned $1 billion: all-time box-office champ TITANIC ($1.83 billion) and the final LORD OF THE RINGS installment, THE RETURN OF THE KING ($1.13 billion).

In an article published September 7, Variety attributes the success of DEAD MAN'S CHEST to three factors: "the worldwide drawing power of Johnny Depp; the still-substantial goodwill from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, which topped $650 million worldwide; and pic's deep fan appeal." Variety does see the success of DEAD MAN'S CHEST raising expectations for AT WORLD'S END when it debuts on May 25, 2007 . . . on the heels of SPIDER-MAN 3 (opening May 4) and SHREK THE THIRD (opening May 18). Thanks to emma for posting the Variety article; you can read it on the News & Views forum.

DEAD MAN'S CHEST can add the "fastest-to-$1 billion" title to its impressive list of box office achievements. Congratulations to Johnny Depp, Gore Verbinski, the producers, writers, cast and crew of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST . . . you are truly one in a billion.

A dream comes true--Keith Richards shoots his scenes for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END

Filming of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END has shifted from the water to the Burbank soundstages this week. Keith Richards is in town to shoot his scenes as the pirate Teague, and is expected to wrap his part by Saturday. We'd say "Break a leg" to the novice pirate-actor, but given Keith's recent tumble from a coconut tree, that could be tempting fate . . . so instead we will thank him for making so many dreams come true. Can't wait to see you in the movies, Keef!

DEAD MAN'S CHEST boosts summer movie revenues, says AP's David Germain

Johnny Depp's PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST gave a welcome boost to summer movie revenues and re-energized an industry that had been in decline, writes David Germain of the Associated Press in his end-of-season report. The record-breaking box office performance of DEAD MAN'S CHEST brought audiences back to the theaters; factoring in higher ticket prices, Germain says, the moviegoing audience actually grew about 3.1 percent this summer, while revenues were up more than 6 percent. DEAD MAN'S CHEST grossed more than $400 million domestically, making it far and away the most successful movie of the North American summer. Three other films--CARS, X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, and THE DA VINCI CODE--grossed more than $200 million each; SUPERMAN RETURNS is hovering around $196 million and may cross the $200 million mark before it ends its run.

Disney's Pirates Sets More Records

Disney's Pirates Sets More Records

Exactly how much gold bullion is in ‘Dead Mans Chest'? The Pirates of the Caribbean sequel starring Johnny Depp has become only the third film ever to gross over 1 Billion worldwide. That's a B, not for bullion, but billion.

The only other films to accomplish such a feat are Titanic and The Lord Of the Rings: The Return of the king. The film has been extremely well received aboard even though it has been off top 10 domestic charts for weeks. Despite this, a solid labor day weekend pushed its domestic total to 414 million. International totals stand at $583 million with Japan and the U.K. showing great interest in the film.

Its not over for Captain Jack Sparrow and crew. The final installment opens May 25, 2007 entitled "Pirates Of The Caribbean: At Worlds End" The World, it seems has been very good to Pirates.

John Mark Karr Wants Johnny Depp To Play Him On The Big Screen

Johnny DeppThe man who falsely claimed to have murdered JonBenet Ramsey desperately wants Johnny Depp to play him in the movie version of his life because he believes they have so much in common. John Mark Karr was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of murdering the six-year-old beauty queen in her Colorado home, but yesterday all charges were dropped pertaining to the case after DNA evidence from the scene eliminated Karr as a suspect. Karr's family has already sold the film and book rights to his life story.

The Smoking Gun website has posted transcripts of an audio conversation between Karr and the University Of Colorado journalism professor to whom he falsely confessed, where he talks about his top casting choices.

Karr says, "I already know the actor I want to play my part...Johnny Depp...He reminds me so much of me. And he looks like me. And he would play the part perfectly. Very similar to my personality except for the fact that Willy Wonka did not know how to treat children, he had no knowledge of how to be around children. It's his look, it's his age, it's the fact that he's an attractive man and he fits my part perfectly."

Karr is currently being extradited to California, where he will face child pornography charges from 2001.

An official subtitle for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 3--at last!

After months of uncertainty, Disney has finally chosen the official subtitle for the third film in the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN series. It will be PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END, screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio confirm--the very phrase the scribes had lobbied for on the red carpet at Disneyland at the DEAD MAN'S CHEST premiere.

Although there was some debate about whether or not an apostrophe would be included in the subtitle, the final version does include the apostrophe: AT WORLD'S END. Coming to a muliplex near you in May 2007!

Johnny to appear in Sin City 3!!!

According to some sources Johnny is hoping for a role in Sin City 3. Sin City 2 has yet to start filming and 3 is already being planned.

This at the moment is a rumour untill further notice.

Johnny Depp to begin filming SWEENEY TODD on February 5th

Tim Burton's version of the Stephen Sondheim musical thriller SWEENEY TODD, starring Johnny Depp as the notorious barber, will begin filming on February 5, 2007, DreamWorks Studio announced today. The DreamWorks-Warner Bros. co-production will film at Burton's favorite stomping grounds, Pinewood Studios in London. Two-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood will design the costumes, and Oscar-nominated cinematographer Dante Spinotti, who shot L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, will be Burton's director of photography.

According to Variety, the SWEENEY TODD producers said "rehearsals and pre-recordings will begin in November and December;" that gives Johnny only a short break after finishing PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 3, which is currently shooting in southern California. DreamWorks spokesman Marvin Levy told the Associated Press that Johnny Depp "is expected to do his own singing" as Sweeney Todd.

Doubts whether Depp can cut it as Sweeney Todd

As a pirate Johnny Depp rules the waves, but can he master the high Cs? Stephen Sondheim, the veteran composer, wants the actor to take a voice test before he blesses Depp as cinema’s latest Sweeney Todd.
The 76-year-old composer is concerned that Depp, who has played with rock bands since he was 13 and based his anti-hero Jack Sparrow on Keith Richards, the Rolling Stone, may be too “rock’n’roll” to play the murderous barber of Fleet Street.

Tim Burton, the London-based director behind the proposed film, has been praising Depp’s singing voice, but Sondheim needs to be convinced. The composer has said that he will not approve a cinematic version of his Broadway musical, which he describes as “virtually an opera”, if the main character has to mime rather than sing.

“He wants to make sure that all versions of his works are the best possible,” said his spokesman.

Hollywood producers acting as mediators between the New York composer and the London-based director have tracked down rock records made by Depp during the 1980s. However, on most of them Depp only plays guitar, so some other form of voice test may prove necessary.

This musical demand did not affect the previous portrayals of the Victorian era’s favourite villain. He has been played by the aptly-named but tone deaf Tod Slaughter in 1936, followed more recently by Ben Kingsley and Ray Winstone in British television adaptations.

In the original story from 1847, based on a court report in The Times, Todd cuts his clients’ throats and tumbles them into a cellar where an accomplice turns them into meat pies. But Burton wants to film the Sondheim version in which the barber is seeking revenge on a judge who destroyed his family.

Depp, 43, a half-Irish, half-Cherokee American, once described how he used rock music to escape depression and self-mutilation in his adolescence. Like other actors such as Keanu Reeves and Bruce Willis, he has carried on playing his music off-screen, appearing on Top of the Pops in 1994 with the Irish band the Pogues. He imitated Elvis Presley in his early film Cry Baby where he proved that he could sing, albeit in a stylised fashion.

A business source close to Depp said that the actor had been bemused by Sondheim’s request: “He finds it funny that there are questions about his voice as he has been singing all his life.”

Actors are not always great singers, as Clint Eastwood proved when he talked to the trees in Paint Your Wagon.

In the 1960s Marni Nixon, the soprano, secretly lent her voice to Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, to Natalie Wood in West Side Story and to Deborah Kerr in The King and I.

Recently a number of actors have successfully played well known singers: Jamie Foxx won an Oscar for his portrayal of Ray Charles, followed last year by Reese Witherspoon as June Carter Cash; Joaquin Phoenix was nominated for his role of Johnny Cash in Walk the Line. Their success has encouraged studios to take more chances with raw voices.

Both Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman have talked about signing up for a musical. A spokesman for Kidman said last week: “Of course she can sing, but how good is she? I do not know, I have not been in a shower with her.”

Depp to quit at 50?

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN star JOHNNY DEPP is nearing the end of his acting career, insisting he will not appear on screen after he turns 50.
The 43-year-old heart-throb is concerned that his ageing appearance will affect how he is seen by the public.

Johnny Depp talks about kissing Keira Knightley and singing in Sweeny Todd

In an interview with Ruben V. Nepales for the promotion of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST, Johnny Depp got to answer a few fresh questions. For example, Johnny was surprised to hear that co-star Keira Knightley had rated him a better kisser than Orlando Bloom. Asked to describe the mood when they kissed, Johnny diplomatically replied, "It is always awkward when you are kissing someone you are not romantically involved with. It is acting and it is fake. Kissing scenes are always strange to me, especially since Keira is twentysomething years younger. But she was a good sport. We did what we had to do . . . and moved on to the next thing. You can almost compare kissing scenes to stunts," Johnny added. "It is a strange moment before and after. And then it is just done."

And will Johnny feel equally awkward singing in the film version of the musical SWEENEY TODD? Johnny expressed enthusiasm for the project, calling the chance to make a sixth film with good friend Tim Burton "a great opportunity." However, he warned the reporter that he "is not a singer.[. . .] I would never ever claim to be a singer but I am willing to give it a shot, to see if it works," Johnny explained. At a time when he could easily rest on his accolades and enjoy his box-office success, Johnny instead is finding new ways to stretch as an actor: "It is important to try stuff." He is even considering Marlon Brando's advice that he play Hamlet: "It is one of the more frightening ideas ever but I think it would be great to do Hamlet in a very small theater."

Baby on the way???Junior Depp 3???

The picture above almost proves what is going to be a real new!!! Johnny Depp is probably  expecting his third child and probably that's not just a rumor!!!

The article also includes:

"At another bash in the Swiss city Johnny Depp sparked - with this intimate gesture - speculation that long-term love Vanessa Paradis is expecting their third child "

Only time will tell...

Johnny Depp voted the hottest man alive!!!

The convincing winner was offbeat actor Johnny Depp, famous for wearing goofy hats and glasses, who looks like the sort of guy who wouldn't care if people thought he was hot or not.

Depp, 43, became a Hollywood star back in 1990 when he starred in Edward Scissorhands. More recently he has appeared in Pirates of the Carribean and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

He shunned the glitz and glamour of Hollywood for France, and has two young children with his girlfriend Vanessa Paradis.

In second place on our hottest man poll was George Clooney. Though not much older than Depp, the 45-year-old is usually described as an "older" man. The bachelor often declares he will never marry or have children, but with his classically handsome face and devilish grin, women can't help but dream of changing his mind.

In third place was Matthew McConaughey, 36, who was also voted sexiest man alive by People magazine in 2005. The Texan charmer with a twinkle in his eye is currently dating Penelope Cruz who he met while filming Sahara.

The top ten hottest men alive as voted by ninemsn readers are as follows:

1. Johnny Depp
2. George Clooney
3. Matthew McConaughey
4. Brad Pitt
5. Orlando Bloom
6. Jake Gyllenhaal
7. Hugh Jackman
8. Colin Farrell
9. Jude Law
10. Heath Ledger
