What started out as a 4-H project turned into a small herd. In 2001 our 8 year old son, Austin came home from school wanting to join 4-H. We tried to convince him to show rabbits but he insisted that he wanted goats. GOATS??? For some unknown reason, we agreed to give it a try.
After the first year, we found that Austin learned so many valuable lessons while doing this project that we decided to do it again and again and again....needless to say we were hooked!! After all our whole family loved the goats, including our youngest son, Brendan.
In 2006 we decided to purchase 2 bred does, so we could give raising goats a try. Our two does produced 2 whethers for fair and 2 fullblooded does for future breeding. However, what would we breed to? I went to a sale in 2007 to purchase a buck and came home with 8 more does and a buck increasing our herd to 12 does and 1 buck--- Oh yeah, and a dog (Great Pyranese-Ally).
16 babies later we decided to downsize our herd to 5 does, we like this number and it seems to be the perfect herd size for us.
All of our goats were purchased from KB Boer Goats in Urbana, Ohio. (kbboergoats.com)
We had such great success from the first two does that we felt confident about his breedstock and went back for more. We are so glad we did!!
