Why EDLOR? Internet
databases and search approaches widely used on the Web provide inadequate
techniques for the location of high quality resources appropriate to
specific learning contexts, levels and styles.
The various approaches to LORs attempt to meet two objectives: to
obtain better learning resources and reduce the overall costs of digital
resources. Research
indicate many barriers to the selection of quality online resources that
could be avoided through systems that easily encourage teachers to
locate, store, share and manage materials themselves. At the same time,
although administrators and teachers are often concerned with the
effort, time and costs required to create and use quality learning
materials, there is a lot of duplication in teachers’ production of
digital learning materials which could be reduced if they work together.
Although
LORs are a worldwide phenomenon that have received significant funding
and many countries are moving rapidly in repository research and
development, particularly in the United States, Canada and Australia,
they are still a new technology whose worth has yet to be proven,
particularly for those in developing countries. EDLOR is found as a part of academic study to provide an accessible on-line location to store, search and locate accurate and high-quality learning objects appropriate for Egyptian curriculum and teachers and evaluate its effectiveness. Using EDLOR, Egyptian teachers can develop and store a significant number of meta-tagged, high-quality, classified and relevant learning objects that would be immediately and easily used by teachers in classrooms or e-learning projects all across the country. Learning Objects A
Learning object (LO) is essentially any digital resource (e.g., digital
photos, audio files, video clips, Word documents, HTML pages, Java
applets and interactive exercises) that is designed to generate and
support learning activities and enrich learners’ experiences. LO Repositories A learning object repository (LOR) is a database of objects, with import and export interfaces. LORs provide faculty, teachers, curriculum developers and students with easy access to a large storehouse of learning objects that can be shared and used within and across universities and schools. |
