Akirene is the partnership of Aki (also known as Bud),

Irene and Rod, their youngest of four children.

Through the years, a number of  family members would become involved

and contribute to the success of the breeding program at Akirene.

In 1968, the Oishi family would move to a new home on 10 acres

in Maple Ridge, a suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The property would be purchased with the original intent to become Aki's "hobby farm";

however it would soon be transformed into a "Hobby Kennel" for Irene and Rod.

Akirene's beginnings would be comparable to that of many breeders.

It would begin with a purchase of a pet puppy in 1968.

A pure for sable puppy bitch, descending from the Timberidge line

would be purchased from Irene's brother & his wife, Chester and Sharon Rauhaula.

The puppy would be a gift  for their eldest son, Wade.

She would be called "Tia" and registered as

Tia Lass of Chesray

'Tia' would be purchased with a condition of a "puppy back",

thus a breeding would be made locally to a son of

Am Can Ch Banchory High Born ROM/ROMC

(Ch Philidove Heir Presumptive ROM ex Tiree Hall Solo's High-Lite)

The resulting litter would include a fully marked, dark mahogany sable male.

Irene would convince Aki  that this puppy should be kept

as his "farm dog"; to help out on his "hobby farm."

Although the intention would never to be involved further in breeding

or even showing, the Oishi's would receive many compliments

that this sheltie certainly looked like a "Champion Show Dog".

The Oishi's were encouraged to enter a dog show to see how he might do!

Irene would  enter their first homebred in a set of 3 All-Breed shows.

Surprisingly enough, he would complete his championship

breeder/owner handled in one weekend with 3 five point wins!

He would officially become Akirene's first Champion and known as

Can Ch Akirene's Diplomat Am Can CD

Needless to say, life would never be quite the same

for the Oishi family or Aki's 'hobby farm'!

Can Ch Akirene's Diplomat

would never be used as a stud, however his dam

Tia Lass Of Chesray

would produce two more litters.  Her descendants would include

over 100 American Champions

While success would be found with their initial sables,

Irene's eye would be drawn towards the tricolors of the breed.

A search would begin to purchase a top quality tricolour bitch

to serve as the foundation for Akirene.

During this time period, Specialty wins in the Pacific Northwest

were consistently awarded to the beautiful tricolors

and blue merles of a Kennel located in Portland, Oregon.
The breeder's name would be
Mrs. Donna  Olson

(formerly Donna Langness, later Donna Tidswell and finally Donna Harden),

The kennel would be known as the infamous
B a n c h o r y .

Banchory Shelties would capture attention

with their substance in bone, attention to detail of skull,

but above all, elegance with an incomparable sense of presence!

Akirene would find its foundation in a combination of

Am Can Ch Banchory High Born ROM/ROMC

and

Am Can Ch Cherden Sock It To 'Em CD ROM/ROMC

An advertisement within the breed publication

"The Sheltie Special" would draw the attention of Irene.

She would be born on June 20, 1972

Her sire would be

Banchory Black Gold

(Am Can Ch Banchory High Born ROM/ROMC ex Banchory Silver Fanfare)

while her dam would be the very lovely

Am Can Ch Banchory Sugar Blue

(Am Can Ch Cherden Sock It To Em ROM/ROMC ex Banchory Pamper of Maywood)

She would become known as the Specialty winning . . .

Can Ch Banchory The Black Rose CD (3 pt major)

Easily completing her Canadian title,

she would also be awarded Best Opposite Sex at the

1975 SSC of BC Specialty under Breeder-Judge Ariel Sleeth.

She would be awarded an American 3 point major with numerous Major Reserves.

While worthy of an American title, one obstacle would prevent its completion.

The familiar words, "If she only had more coat!"

would be heard time and time again from the judges.

Lack of coat would result from heat cycles

occurring every 4 months, followed by a complete change of coat.

As a result, she would rarely carry a full coat for any period of time.

Her mark on the breed would not be made  within the Conformation Ring,

but rather within the pedigrees,  as a

producer and contributor to many of today's shelties.

The first litter produced from

Can Ch Banchory The Black Rose CD

would be sired by her maternal grandsire,

Am Can Ch Cherden Sock It To 'Em CD ROM/ROMC

Their litter would consist of six tricolours, including 3 colour headed whites!

A tricolour daughter  would be kept and registered as

Akirene's Carmengay Rose

At her first outing she would be awarded

Best In Sweepstakes, Reserve Winners Bitch & Best Puppy In Breed

at the 1975  SSC of BC Specialty under Breeder-Judge Ariel Sleeth.

Two littermates would achieve titles in obedience!

OT Ch Akirene's Tina Rose UD

(UD completed at just 11 months of age!)

 and

Akirene's Cherokee Rose CDX

Akirene's Cherokee Rose CDX

would later be bred to the Peter son

Am Ch Banchory The Cornerstone ROM

to produce the tri-factored sable male

Can Ch Wee Akirene's MacTavish CD

Initially, it would be Irene and their eldest son Wade

involved with the breeding and Dog Shows.
It would become apparent, however that Wade lacked interest in the shelties.

He was more interested watching the ring with the girl Junior handlers
than being attentive to assist Irene
with her shelties.

Wade would also have a keen interest in the business potential of the dogs;

an interest which quickly diminished when he realized that the expenses always

exceeded any money gained within this hobby!

When it became apparent that  Wade was not interested in going to the dog shows,

their youngest son, Rod (or Roddy) would be quick to take his place.

Rod would have a natural way with animals.  Dogs were usually drawn to the young 10 year old boy.

He would have the ability to connect with shelties, especially ones which

were considered as a challenge to show.
Rod was eager for the opportunity
to go to the shows with Irene.

He was even more excited to have a sheltie of his own;

a blue merle if given the choice of colors.

It would be decided that he could attend the shows

and have a sheltie of his own if certain conditions were met.

The first requirement involved the ability to develop a working relationship with a dog.

Rod would need to complete an Open degree (CDX) in obedience.

This would require attending weekly obedience classes, daily training, and entering obedience trials.

He would complete the Open training on their first homebred

Can Ch Akirene's Diplomat CDX

The second condition would involve the development of skill and technique

in handling and display of sportsmanship.

Rod would become a member of the Vancouver Junior Kennel Club;

attending weekly junior handling classes taught by Elsie Murray.

He would compete within the Junior Handling Competitions.

His sportsmanship in these competitions would be observed.

The third condition would involve the ability to be patient and when working with puppies.

Rod would attend weekly adult handling classes to show train puppies,

and handle puppies at sanction matches.

The fourth condition required the understanding that dogs were a hobby and not a business.

No monetary gain could be received from involvement

with any dog until he was past the age of 16.

The final condition required maintaining levels of academic excellence at school.

School would always be the priority!

The conditions were agreed upon and a planned breeding for

Can Ch Banchory The Black Rose CD

to a blue merle would be considered.

The second litter from

Can Ch Banchory The Black Rose CD

would be sired by the inbred Pow son,

Am Ch Banchory Thunder Blue ROM/ROMC

(Am Can Ch Cherden Sock It To 'Em ROM/ROMC ex Clan Duncan Banchory Bluette)

This litter would consist of six puppies, four of which were color headed whites!

There would be only one blue merle bitch in the litter.

She would be claimed as Roddy's promised puppy, and would be registered as

Akirene's South Sea Blue

There would be however, a very beautiful  blue headed

white bitch which Irene could not let go as simply a pet.

This puppy would be offered as a gift to Banchory and would become known as

 Akirene's Snowbird

Akirene's South Sea Blue

and Roddy's first time within the conformation ring would be memorable!

Irene would plan to enter her Pow daughter at a set of three all breed shows.

Rod would plead for the opportunity to enter his puppy as well.
He was cautioned that if his puppy went to the shows,
he needed to be prepared not to win.
Irene would explain that puppies rarely win at the All-Breed Shows;
especially a six month blue merle with one blue eye handled by a child!
Roddy was reminded of their agreement that if he cried

or became upset when he lost, he could never go to another show.

Rod would reassure his mother that  he would show good sportsmanship if his puppy lost .
Entries would be made
and a six hour drive with reminders would fill the trip.

On the first day of shows Roddy and his puppy would win the 6-9 class with 3 puppies competing.

This would be followed by Irene and her tri bitch  winning the Open class with 9 bitches competing.

Irene would give her son another quick reminder of their agreement

as they both entered the Winner's ring.

When the judge announced
his decision for Winners Bitch,

it would be the  6 month old puppy and her young handler to receive the honours.

Furthermore, they would be awarded Best of Breed (over 5 Specials)

Working Group 4th, Best Puppy in Group, and Best Puppy In Show!

The young team would continue to win all 3 days;  with Irene's bitch taking the Reserve placements.

It would thus come to be, that the leashes would be forever turned over to Roddy,

who became known as the exclusive handler at Akirene.

Can Ch Akirene's South Sea Blue

would first be bred to

Am Can Ch Banchory Deep Purple ROM

(Am Ch Sundowner Mr. Bojangles ROM ex Horizon's White Ice)

to produce a stunning bitch with facial markings identical to her sire.
She would be named after
her sire's owner at that time, and thusly named "Judy Lowe".
She would become known as the lovely American Specialty winning blue bitch

Am Ch Akirene's Lowe And Behold

She would be acquired by  Larry and Marilyn Sumida of Brievin Shelties.
Unfortunately, this lovely bitch
would become a tragic victim of Divorce and a loss to the breed,

when her owners ended their marriage and their involvement in shelties.

Can Ch Akirene's South Sea Blue

would also be bred to Akirene's previously owned bi-blue

Am Ch Madselin's Grand Slam

(Am Can Ch Banchory Backstop ROM/ROMC ex Can Ch Banchory Misty Blue)

prior to his sale to George & Melanie Williams  of Lochanora.

This breeding would produce. . .

Akirene's El Solo Blue Ecstacy

who would be acquired by Marjorie and Richard Norstrom of  El Solo Shelties.

Prior to leaving Akirene, at 6 months she would be awarded

Best In Sweepstakes, Reserve Winnners Bitch  & Best Puppy in Show

at the SSC of BC Specialty under

Breeder-Judge Mary Van Wagenen of Sea Isle Kennels

The blue merle color headed white

Akirene's Snowbird

would be sent to Banchory to be a significant contributor
