- What is Airsoft?
Airsoft is a hobby and a sport. It is a lot like Paintball, but instead of using large paintballs, airsoft uses 6mm plastic bb's. There are three main weights of bb's: .12g, .2g, and .25g. There are many others like .43 but they are rarely used. Airsoft guns are replicas of real guns but they can not be modified to fire real ammunition. For maximun realism airsoft companies like to use metal bodies to get the real feel like a real gun. The Company "Classic Army" uses all metal bodies on their guns, and whatever is metal on the real gun extrernally is metal on the Classic Army guns. Tokyo Marui (the first airsoft company and the best, in my opinion) uses a mix of plastic and metal parts on their guns, and therefore they are significantly cheaper than Classic Army guns.
Airsoft is farely safe, as long as you wear proper eye protection you will be fine. If you dont wear eye protection you maybe hit in the eye and become blind. When you get shot with an airsoft bb, it stings for several seconds, and in worst cases it may leave a small bruise. It all depends on the power of the gun. Airsoft guns are catogorizied occording to their FPS. FPS is Feet Per Second. That is how fast the bb is traveling when it leaves the barrel. The weakest guns that are spring guns ( you must cock them prior to everyshot) range from 150 fps to 220 fps. That is really really slow and probably wont even puncture cardboard. Then there are gas guns ( the magazine hold compressed gas, and at every pull of the trigger, some it released to power the bb) ranges from 250fps all the way to 400fps. (with gas guns 400fps can only be reached by useing C02 gas (carbon dioxide). And then there are the Aeg's "Automatic Electric Gun". These use a large battery to power a motor that winds a spring back and forth to shoot bb's in Automatic or SemiAutomatic. These guns in stock form shoot at 275 fps to 330fps stock. But you can upgraded Aeg's by gettiing a bigger battery, a more powerful spring, reinforced gears, precision barrel... the list goes on. My gun (Tokyo Marui Ak-47) is upgraded with a M120 Spring, special bushings, and precision barrel, and it shoots a litle over 400 FPS.
The cool thing with airsoft is that there are endless amounts of accessories. On Almost all AEG's you can put a scope on it, a laser, silencer, Grenade Launcher, bipod, conversion kit, red dot scope, mount, flashlight... and it goes on.

Airsoft can be a very expensive hobby, but in the long run its worth it!
