On Saturday, November 1, 2003, Lady Murghieal and I taught a class at Northshield
Rapier Academy in the Shire of Inner Sea on how to run a tourney list. While the event was geared toward rapier,
the principles of list administration apply to tourneys in both
heavy armored combat and rapier within the SCA.
Based on the interest showed at NRA, and the willingness and consent of the Principality Earl Marshall and Principality Rapier Marshall, I have now taught List Administration 101 at a couple of more times and will continue to do so as long as there is interest in the Principality and a need for a class of this type.
Below are links to the handouts used in the class. Some are Word documents, some are Excel files, and some are .pdf files. If you have difficulty opening any of the files, please feel free to contact me via email.
How to Run a Tourney (Word document). This handout contains some general notes and tips on how to run a tourney of any style. It focuses mostly on communication with the Marshalls and Heralds and setting up the list table.
Midrealm Uber-Waiver Form (Adobe Acrobat document). This a newer form in the Midrealm designed to consolidate paperwork needed for running a list. It serves as tourney sign up, marshall sign up, paperwork tracking (membership and authorization cards), and waiver for participation. I'm told that the future Kingdom of Northshield is developing a similar all-in-one form for use as well.
Tourney Styles, Bouts and Times (Word document). This is a sheet describing the three most common tourney styles fought in the SCA (at least in the Midrealm) - Single Elimination Tourney, Round Robin, and Double Elimination Tourney. Also included are formulas for figuring out how many bouts you'll have for each style of tourney given the number of fighters.
Tourney Bouts and Times Cheatsheet (Word document) (Excel worksheet). This is a sheet showing how many bouts to expect for each of the three tourney styles above and approximately how long a tourney of that many bouts will take (assuming 4 minutes per bout on average). The Excel spreadsheet can be reconfigured to compute times for different expected times per bout.
The Atlantian Minister of the Lists Tourney Forms page. The Atlantian Minister of the Lists is my hero. Two days before the class I stumbled across this website which contains Adobe Acrobat tourney trees for double elimination tourneys for anywhere from 3 to 25 and 32 fighters. There is also a Round Robin form available here for ten fighters including suggested matches for bouts.
Lord Yves de Fortanier deserves commendation and much good single malt scotch (or the beverage of his choice) for his website at the Rotunda detailing the Table Method for running lists. When I was first thrust into the job of running a list, a dear, dear friend taught me this method for running a double-elimination tourney and it saved my novice backside. I highly recommend that anyone considering running lists regularly learn this style. It allows for far greater flexibility than any tree. Lord Yves has done an absolutely fabulous job describing the style and providing examples of how to use it in real life situations. Go. Read. Learn. I can't stress this enough. Really
Tourney Sheet for Table Method (Word document). This is a sheet I developed in Word to assist
in running a list in the table method. Strictly speaking, you can create a table on any piece of scrap paper in a pinch
(I've done it; I know!), but the sheet helps if you're just starting out.
