Mission Statement

The American Indian Movement Florida Chapter is a not for profit Florida organization of Indigenous peoples from North, Meso and South America working for the civil, human, treaty and sovereign rights of Indigenous peoples as well as the recognition of, and protection of the rights of Indigenous peoples, Nations and sacred lands.

The American Indian Movement Florida Chapter is the state chapter of the international Indigenous rights organization founded in Minneapolis, MN in 1968 and takes its direction from the national leadership of the American Indian Movement.

WHAT IS FLORIDA AIM?

AIM Florida was founded in 1989 by David Goyette. Upon the passing of David Goyette in 1996 AIM Florida annually awards the Florida AIM Indigenous Rights Award in his honor and memory. AIM Florida was recognized by the National AIM leadership at the 1989 Eastern AIM Conference in Accokeek, MD, and is the only chapter in Florida of the international Indigenous rights organization.

AIM Florida works on issues of critical concern to Indigenous peoples in Florida. In linking with the Independent Traditional Seminole Nation we have become active in efforts to reduce the mercury contamination of the Everglades.

AIM Florida has protected or forced repatriations in over one-hundred-twenty-six burial sites in the State of Florida including highly publicized efforts at Bonita Springs, Warm Mineral Springs, Riverview Pointe (Bradenton) and Reedy Mound in Hudson.

AIM Florida works on a wide variety of issues from violations of the Indian Child Welfare Act, to employment discrimination, to battling stereotypes to the growing exploitation of Indigenous peoples and cultures by new agers and sports mascots.
