DD-WRT Firmware for Router

I've heard from several folks about problems with their DSL.

I believe that we did have a system-wide problem that was causing very slow DSL speeds at certain times of the day. It seems like this problem has been fixed - at least I've not experienced any slowdown problems for over a month now (knock on wood).

The problems I'm hearing now are that some folks are getting "DSL dropouts", where they loose DSL completely. There are many reasons that would cause this, I'm certainly no expert on this.

But, I am aware of ONE potential cause - for those using a wireless router. The problem that I've experienced were laptops wirelessly connecting to a router and getting random dropped connection to the Internet. Very frustrating and annoying.

After searching the Internet I found others experiencing the same problem. I discovered that the problem was related to the firmware in the router. In other words, the program in the router that coordinates the communication to/from the Laptop to the router was just not very good.

The solution was to get better firmware for the router. Fortunately, there is a group that has created router firmware that works better, is free and has a funnny name - dd-wrt. For those computer geeks (like me) that are interested, you can read more at...

The problem is trying to get the good firmware into your existing router. I don't recommend trying to "flash" your existing router with the dd-wrt firmware - that's something left to the comptuer experts. A simplier way is just to purchase another wireless router on Ebay that someone has already done this for you.

One router that was worked good for me is the Linksys WRT54G-TM. If you search Ebay you will find many of these. Make sure it has the dd-wrt firmware. Do a search for...

dd-wrt WRT54G-TM

Prices are $50-$60 for a new router that has the dd-wrt firmware.

While this may or may not solve your DSL drop-out issues. I have successfully corrected this one problem in 3 separate instances by just getting a better router..  Paul

660 DSL Modem Available

The current DSL modem from Centurylink is called the "660".  It is smaller than the older model (645) and is much easier to setup.

A few years ago,  Sprint/Embarq changed the way their servers communicate with the DSL modems.  The new method is called DHCP, which is how the 660 modem works.  The older 645 Modem used "PPPoE".  So it's best to have the new 660 DSL modem.

The older 645 modem also had the same default IP address as the Linksys Router (192.168.1.1) - so you had to change one of the addresses to make them work together.

The new 660 DSL modem uses 192.168.2.1 as the default IP address.  This does not conflict with the default IP address of the Linksys Router (192.168.1.1). Note that if you had changed the Linksys Router IP address to 192.168.2.1, then you will first need to reset it back to the default address 192.168.1.1.

If you call Centurylink and request the new 660 DSL modem they SHOULD sent it to you at no cost (Need to Verify this - some AHPOA members have said Centurylink is charging for this new modem now!).  When you install the 660 DSL modem, you need to be sure that you power down the old 645 modem and leave it off at least 1 hour before you plug in the 660 DSL modem.  The Centurylink server needs to "forget" the old 645 modem.  After an hour,  all you should have to do is plug in the new 660 modem and everything should start up properly.

Call Centurylink Tech Support 1-877-646-3282 if you have problems setting up the modem.  If the Internet Lights does not come on after a few moments - then call Centurylink Tech Support.
